eh, for the first act and most of the start of homestuck, the story is random and nonsensical because Andrew Hussie just took commands from readers and made the characters do them. Once it actually gets going, it's still pretty nonsensical but there is an actual plot and it's pretty cool.
It kinda sucks that you don't like it but you might if you give it another try (by which I mean read the whole thing, unless you already did in which case nevermind.)
at least you like the fanart though..?? haha

It's really not. Fandom has the worst ideas.

Art is banging though.

the story is actually really complex, you would know if you read the comic.

I remember back when Lost was big, there were these fans who thought they were geniuses because they were into it. If you didn't like Lost, or preferred to watch something else, then they would declare that you were a complete moron, and that the only reason you could possibly not be into the Sacred Show was that you were too stupid to understand it. It was brilliant and complex, you see, and therefore went above the heads of most people. But not them, oh no. They got it, and that proved that they were Special and Super Intelligent.

I was reminded of that just now.

I'm exactly the same way. And I get the feeling that what I actually like most about the fanart isn't actually in the comic itself.

That and I've already mentioned around here how much I hate seeing it everywhere, awesome art aside.

Oh and the fans are super fucking defensive. They'll probably descend on you shortly.

I'd call us more invasive. Logically, the only reason you couldn't like it is cause you didn't read all of it. READ IT. READ IT NOW. LET US TELL YOU ABOUT HOMESTUCK. ONE OF US. ONE OF US.

More like that, see?

Maybe its just not your thing? Nothing wrong with that. But if you really couldn't get into it you really don't know what is fanon and what's canon -- so maybe you should just not be in the fandom?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-08 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you being serious this is the most stuck-up comment ever. Who cares if they can't distinguish fanon from canon. As long as they're enjoying themselves it's all good.

ugh people like you that claim to like something but never watch/read/played the source material annoy me so much.

you can't even say 'well i can't afford to buy and play game x or see movie y or read book z' since homestuck is a webcomic.

and if you liked homestuck like you say, you would READ THE DAMN THING.

I don't think the canon story is bad or too simple and random, and I've read the comic.

I do tend to like fanon better though. It's not that fandom has better ideas, it's just that those ideas are more interesting to me.

I think it's a good story...there is a lot that doesn't make sense when it's first introduced but as you read on it clicks. Tends to happen with an ongoing series like this, especially when it's not complete. But yeah. It's okay to not be into something. Sorry it's frustrating for you, though.

Have you read until the end of act 3? There is a plot, but you really have to slog through it to get there. As for the fandom though, it's awesome. No question. I'm still waiting for the Homestuck anime though (If the Touhou fandom can do it, then so can you!).

I agree. I think the fanart's gorgeous, and I'll even admit that it would be an amazing story if it didn't seem like a massive clusterfuck of random, but I just can't get past Hussie's writing. Which is a real shame from my point of view, because it seems like something I'd like if it wasn't impossible to keep track of what's going on most of the time. :\

You and I are in the same boat, OP. I love the fanart and people's different takes on the characters, but I just cannot get into the comic. I gave it a shot, but it's just not my cup of tea.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-08 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
This is pretty much my feelings with regards to Homestuck. Great art, good fic, but the source is too boring.

I could point you to some homestuck theorists that would prove that "stupid, random, thrown together" idea wrong.

But if it's not your thing that's fine. A lot of people only stay for the pretty fanart.

[personal profile] darkmanifest 2012-10-09 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I understand that, I've got my fair share of media which I only like for the fanworks. Sometimes I get more into it and find myself loving the canon, as well, sometimes the canon continues to bore me, but nothing wrong with appreciating great fanart alone.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'd love to get into it, but I can't stand the formatting, flashing images, and art style.

I see all the cool fanart and cosplays and crossover fanfic and am like "hey, I should give Homestuck another try!" and then I go back to where I left off, look at the squat little characters in the big black and white rooms with the little chatroom typing, and sigh and go check out something else.

The people that are "Why won't you finish it!! You can't comment on hating it until you finish it!" are the same ones that will go "If you don't like it, then don't read it" when you finish reading the comic and write a rant on hating it... so uhm...

I'm trying to get into it because a few of my friends are and I want to be able to enjoy her fic and the art more, but I'm going through Act I and just finished Act II and just ... it's boring and not funny. I've been reading the pesterchums and not skipping stuff, just I just feel like it's been overhyped so my expectations were too high I guess so that's probably why I can't get into it. Some of the music is good, but not good enough to make me want to continue.

Well, different strokes for different folks. I get a little confused when people say that the plot doesn't make any sense, myself: when you get to a certain point, it starts to become apparent that, as someone once put it, we're given answers first and the questions to them later due to all the spacetime shit.

But I guess Homestuck gets hyped up a lot, so if it doesn't meet your expectations, oh well.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
The comic is convoluted as FUCK. Needlessly so.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree 1,000%. The plot really is random and overcomplicated. I have read the whole thing and will keep reading it because every now and then something really funny happens, but overall the whole thing is kind of a boring mess. Way too much going on, way too much exposition, way too many characters.

For me, any interest in Homestuck can pretty much be summarized by: Sometimes Dave Makes Me Laugh.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
*shrugs* different strokes for different folks. I'd say the only people it's important to keep this a secret from are some of the more raving homestucks on tumblr and especially on the mspa forums. (just maybe don't post this secret on tumblr and tag it "homestuck" and you're golden. enjoy all the fanart you want and totally ignore the canon.)
