a) omg but actors have to be pretty!

b) the continuity work for the makeup department would be a bitch.

Re: b): That's my answer as well. Applying scars, let alone applying them in the same places, would be costly and time-consuming. Also: a bitch. OP, you have to find fandoms where the actors get scars pre-series and/or on the job and wear bandaids as if they were never hurt and we're not supposed to notice, lol.

Pretty much this. Unless the scar has a deep meaningful history (usually told in detailed flashbacks) the makeup department won't bother. Heck they forgot to add Castiel's burn mark on Dean's bicep and had to come up with some bullcrap story to explain it and that was a scar they did make a big deal about.

It would be nice and more realistic but considering that would mean an actor would have to sit a couple of hours in a make-up chair every day as well as more work for the make-up artists, I can see why it's not often done. Time and money are huge things when it comes to series.

But, yeah. Like take SPN's Winchesters, for example. Those two should be scarred up from head to toe and, yet, they aren't. Heck, Dean didn't even get to keep the handprint that Castiel gave him. It vanished in season seven.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I think one of the actor's mentioned that the make up department just forgot to put it on one time and they decided to stop doing it

Thank you for the link instead of image. Scars don't bother me if I'm warned, but surprise pictures of scars do tend to upset or trigger me.

As for the secret: Some people heal and don't have many scars. Also it's tv and the people have to be perfect and consistency of scars for makeup and everything would be a hassle they don't want.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
This bothers me as well. Because I A) have a huge realism kink and B) have a huge scar kink.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand what you mean. Watching Supernatural the other day and Dean sliced his arm like three times in that one episode, how is he not covered in scars?

For the reasons mentioned above (cost/time attached to makeup), I can put up with this sort of thing in live action shows. It still drives me nuts in anime, comics (when involving characters who don't have any kind of advanced healing, invulnerability, or other canon excuse), and especially in novels when characters who do a lot of fighting are drawn/described as having flawless skin, no scars even after years in the field, etc.

I'd add my voice to the many in this thread saying, that would take a lot of continuity and makeup work for a TV show, especially if the injury happens early in the series and it runs really long. And especially if the injury/scar is complicated (like a large burn area versus a gash).

That being said, does anyone have any examples of scars staying within a series? OP might want to check out animated series, where there would be no issue with extra makeup time and effort. In the anime series Trigun, the main character keeps his entire body covered most of the time to hide his many scars.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
In the the Negima manga by Ken Akamatsu, Negi keeps a scar on his cheek from the time he gets the wound and onward. Of course, it's not that hard to just draw a line on his cheek.

Disappearing scars don't usually bother me on TV shows or movies, but for some reason Beckett's chest scar on "Castle" annoys the living daylights out of me. She got shot in the chest. She was operated on, and if I remember correctly the bullet was really close to her heart. It was not by any means a small thing, but her scar is the exact shape and size of the bullet. In one of the most recent episodes it looked more like a hickey than anything. I just... I don't know why it bothers me that it's not bigger but it does!

Really sorry for the rant guys. Would a pun be in bad taste if I said I just had to get it off my chest?

There are a couple of reasons for this.

1) Pretty people on TV/in movies.

2) Normally, in storytelling, each physical feature should tell you something about a character. A scarred up character means something just like an unscarred one means something. And it's not always, "Gets hurt a lot/Doesn't get hurt a lot". Most of the time writers go by the thought that every scar should have a story, unless it's just to give an overall impression of a character.

3) You are asking that the actors either scar themselves or put on a bunch of scar make up each shoot that continually becomes more and more as they earn more and more scars.

4) Everyone heals differently. What causes you to scar may not cause someone else to scar.

5) If this happened to some characters they would be covered in nothing but scars. While that may be cool it may not be the impression the creator wants the character to give to not only the audience but also other characters.

So... yeah.

Heh, I'm kind of the same way. I've got a fair-sized scar on one arm from a door. (Nothing dramatic happened, just a bit of metal poked out and it slid along my arm as the door closed. Barely even noticed it at the time. Three inch scar now.)

I like when characters keep scars. When it's a plot-point scar, I hope it stays, but I like it even better when it's just innocuous, hard-living scars that just sort of stay around. I can understand not wanting to have to do make-up for something that simple in every episode, but when they do put in the extra effort, I usually notice and it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling (the attention to detail, not the scarring itself).

This secret kind of made me think of the Clint/Coulson (and Clint/Natasha) fandom. Seems like every time it's naked time, there's at least a throw-away line about the agents having plenty of scars, because dangit, they do dangerous stuff.

It really depends on the person.

I've been in some pretty bad car accidents and have very minimal or no scars (some shiny, centimeter and a half long marks from airbag burns, but that's it). My face especially doesn't scar well. I once fell from a bike and scraped the skin off one side of my face but there's nothing to see from it. Most of my burn marks (I worked in food service for five years) have faded to be almost unnoticeable. You also can't tell I've skinned my knees multiple times. I have tons of little scars from cuts, though.

One of many many reasons I am ever so fond of Breaking Bad is their yen for continuity on this issue. Walt still has his surgical scars, people bear injuries that heal over time, etc... Admittedly, Jesse is still very pretty for a guy that regularly gets his face beaten in, but they also draw his tattoo on every single episode, so that's not a continuity laziness thing.

A related gripe: I get annoyed when a game lets you create a character, and the male characters get really nasty looking or badass scars and the women have dainty, pretty little scars to choose from. (That's one thing I like about SWTOR, you've got some pretty gnarly scar choices even for the girls...)

Everyone else has pretty much given all the reasons why they Just Don't Bother, but—personally speaking, I'd like to see them Bother more often. Both from my preference (never scarring is fucking ridiculous, seriously) and also from wanting to see make-up artists get more work and more pay. It is a thankless job, let me tell you, and no one notices unless you did a shit job!

It does bug me, but as long as they keep mentioning that the scars are there, like in SPN, it feels less like they're ignoring them and more avoiding the two hours in the make-up chair that could be spent actually shooting the show.

From personal experience though, I've had full-on gnarly pieces of metal go through my skin that don't even leave a mark once they are done healing. Ironically, the biggest mark left by anything was scraping up a piece of coral, and not very hard at that, on a snorkeling trip. So for the occasional character, you really can handwave it as just good genetics and fast healing.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Makeup continuity is really tricky. Hence, no scars except UBER IMPORTANT ANGSTY SCARS.

But yeah, it's a rare person who gets to a certain age and doesn't have any scars. I've got one on my foot from when I was three and fell out of a hammock (no really.)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-16 09:36 am (UTC)(link)
On a mildly related note - when characters need to cut themselves, why do they *always* do it on the palms? And it's never shown how long *that* takes to heal either.
