"Chris Daughtry must be stopped
I am so sick of all the articles saying Chris wrote the song “It’s Not Over”. Then the other day I saw in In touch that Ace Young is taking credit as well. Bulls*&%t. Mark fully wrote everybit of that song except the new lyrics in the chorus…which are gay anyhow. Mark wrote the song about his ex- manager screwing him over and they turned it into a fairy love song. Anyway just wanted to vent and give my man his due credit. If anyone agrees, write in to the rags and let em have it. I am!!!"

Is this old quote the reason you find her homophobic or is there more dirt on MJH?

Gasp.

Truly this, a crude comment from a couple years ago about whether or not lyrics are homosexual, is the most homophobic comment I've ever heard from a celebrity. Definitely worth a fandom secret.

Why, she's worse than those I Don't Believe In Homosexuality people!

SHE IS THE CHRIS BROWN OF SLURS

She still shouldn't be using "gay" in a derogatory sense. :/

(Anonymous) 2012-12-02 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, she called gays "fairies". Pretty sure she doesn't like them.
Homophobia is homophobia.

Have you ever talked to someone who actually speaks like this?

What she said was crude, but a lot of people who say stupid shit like this--I agree that it's stupid shit and she shouldn't have said it--are actually cool with gay people. They've made a complete disconnect with the connotations of the word either from willful ignorance or plain old ignorance ignorance.

"Homophobia" is the wrong word for this unless we get more evidence of her saying ugly anti-gay stuff. She might just be an idiot.

Hell, "homophobia" isn't a good word at all. It implies fear. The people we should really worry about don't appear to fear homosexuals at all. They just hate them.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-02 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know that I buy that. I've known a lot of people that use "gay" in that manner, sure--and I can forgive them for that one. But every person I've ever known who used "fairies" like that meant it in its very worst manner, knowingly so. :/

As for the "homophobia" as a word, argument, that's just semantics. It covers the spectrum of ill-will towards homosexuality.

This.

...Yeah, no. As a lesbian, I'm sick and tired of straight people telling me that there's nothing homophobic with using the word "gay" in a derogatory sense because they don't actually have anything against homosexuals. It's still homophobic in practice. After the word "gay" was appropriated by the LGBTQ community, young people began using "gay" in a negative and derogatory sense as something that was "weird" and "bad" because, to them, being gay was "weird" and "bad."

Continued usage of the word in this sense is extremely harmful to gay rights because it attaches a negative stigma to the word "gay." And it's narrow-minded to say it's just about ignorance. People know gay means homosexual. There are a plethora of other less problematic words you can use when you want to insult someone or something. If you're no longer a young teenager, then, yes, you should know better, and I no longer chalk it up to ignorance. It is homophobia in by book.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-03 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
The problem is that as long as homosexual people continue to use "gay" that way, and there are many who do, heterosexual people won't think twice about doing it. That disconnect will always be there for them until they're forced somehow to make that connection.

Please note I didn't really defend her. I just said she might be stupid rather than hateful.

A lot of people are really, really, really stupid, and getting overly outraged at the acts of the merely stupid dilutes attention from the people actually fucking shit up.

If I stopped to yell at every stupid person I would literally never accomplish a damn thing.

I have a hard time working up any kind of anger about this in the context of people who would actually like to kill me or brainwash me or my friends.

Hi there, I'm also a lesbian and not offended by the usage of it *shrugs*. Maybe because it's one of those things that came about when I was young- everybody in primary school started using it as a substitute for stupid or lame and I think it's just stuck. I think for me the word has lost all meaning in regards to something offensive. If somebody starts throwing around faggot or dyke though, I will be offended.

Waiting for everybody to tell me how I feel and dogpiling me for my "self-hating" issues :/

Just because someone is "cool with gay people" doesn't mean they're not homophobic. I've heard some ridiculously homophobic people be kind and welcoming to gay people (even a woman from the Westboro Baptist Church), while still believing that they're sinning for loving people of the same sex, or voting against gay marriage rights.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-03 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
I don't believe in the idea of marriage = equality whatsoever. And I get called homophobic.

:(

It makes me very sad that people jump to judge me before I can even explain.

I've speak with people like this nearly every day, and I disagree that they're ttly okay with the gay.

"real" homophobia also has roots in ignorance, and it's used to defend bigots. From telling people to lay off some crankly old guy was just raised a certain way, or to forgive politicians who conflate being queer with being riddled with addiction or mental health problems. So yeah, using "gay" or "fairy" as some synonym for stupid is homophobic. She may not be the hugest of bigots, but it's still a shitty and homophobic thing to say.

Homophobia is an excellent word when you're talking about social going-ons since it's changed over time to reflect it. Or not. Better go rewrite all the discussions and call outs to say homoandry or whatever the fuck to waste time.

oh wait. queer and gay were appropriated and need to be changed too now.

For the record, my comment about the word homophobia was meant as an aside. I'd rather call hate and bigotry hate and bigotry because it is in fact hate and or bigotry most of the time I've encountered it.

I also speak with people like this every day, and there are plenty of people who use really bigoted terminology and are just fine with the minorities they attack.

But then I live in areas and social groups where this sort of thing is common across all spectra - i.e. using racist, sexist, homophobic words, even if you support those groups. Some of the biggest LGBT allies will use those same words as well as the worst homophobes.

Using "gay" as a synonym of "stupid" is stupid and crude, and should absolutely be discouraged. But it doesn't mean the person using it as such is automatically homophobic, it just means they're stupid and don't quite realize how words like these can ultimately hurt people.

Actually, phobia by itself is fear - phobia at the end of a word implies fear and/or extreme irrational dislike [AKA the definition of hatred].

So Homophobia = An extreme, irrational fear and/or hatred of homosexuals. Thus the word works fine.

That said, 'fairies' is a slur - and I've only run across it used to describe actual humans with the person knowingly using it as a slur, same as the anon further up this thread.

Really? I've actually never heard "fairies" used to describe people. Maybe it's just not common where I'm from, but I honestly had no idea that it was even used as a descriptor, let alone a slur.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-02 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
To me, "gay" is like "retarded" - both words really shouldn't be used to describe something bad or stupid, but most people who use them probably aren't being intentionally offensive. That isn't to say it's right, it's not, but I can roll my eyes and let it slide. "Fairy", however, is VERY clearly a slur. No, I think MJH was being homophobic.
