1. Well. Not knowing you it's kind of hard for me to realize you think she's the strongest female character you've ever seen. D:

13. THe animation on that show always sort of made me starry eyed, and although I haven't seen it more than a few times- I can't pinpoint the reason why.

I am so sorry. When I was a kid? My friends and I would play all kinds of games like that and it was pure, innocent fun. At the end of the day, we went home knowing it was just a game.

You can't blame yourself for it. It wasn't your fault, and you were just playing games. It's not at all your fault that he took things too far or that he couldn't separate fantasy from reality. If the blame lies with anyone, it would probably be the parents, since they were in charge of raising him, not you. Never think it was your responsibility. You couldn't read his mind.

One has to wonder if it could happen to just anyone, given the correct cricumstances.

Please don't blame yourself for something like this. Those who have mental problems and truly lose their grip on reality usually do so through physical causes or extreme cases of abuse or trauma.

So what if you encouraged his fantasies? How is a child supposed to know if someone is mentally unstable? The sad fact is, it would have happened to the kid in your story sooner or later, whether you where there to play with him or not. Any number of things could have triggered it. The only thing that might've stopped it was if he was diagnosed earlier in his life and given treatment.

(You're welcome to take this with a grain of salt, as having taken a few psychology courses does not an expert make. But I seriously don't think that this was your fault.)

20. Dude, power to you. That's where I started out in terms of RP .. going on six years ago now. Lonnnnng time. Of course, no one remembers when the boards were a different format and the Annoyers reigned supreme~

God, it was so lame, but it was so much fun.

I just couldn't take the stupid anymore like four, five years ago, and left for good, but I've still got fond memories. It hasn't really changed, so I totally can't blame you for having a blast there, as dumb as it can be. Hell, that's half the point. No one cares!

also, 14

[identity profile] aishiteru.livejournal.com 2007-08-25 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I largely agree with [livejournal.com profile] evilbo. You were a child yourself, and like you said, to you, it WAS games! At that age, how could you have possibly known the difference? All you did was stick up for a friend. In no way is that wrong.

Even without your influence.. it's highly likely things would have turned out the way they did anyway. You didn't make that kid the way he was, but maybe you made his life happier for a little while, who knows. Issues that run that deep are not something you could have ever stopped - or made all that much worse by yourself. Whether it was childhood trauma, abuse, some sort of mental illness that caused him to believe those things - all of those things are no fault of your own.

If anything, adults should have stepped in, especially his parents, because they should have been more able to pick up on any warning signs than a fifth grader who couldn't have possibly known any better.

I realize this kind of thing isn't something that can just be accepted after blaming yourself for so long, and it's hard to let go of that kind of guilt.. but I also truly believe this wasn't your fault, by any stretch of the imagination.

Im with 23! 8DDD;;;

[identity profile] ew-younerd.livejournal.com 2007-08-24 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
19. Hm.

I'm someone that can complain that female characters in, let's say, Naruto, are written horribly and sometimes very stale. Especially when they are not being solo, but are around the male leads. I don't attribute this to some deep ingrained sexism, just Kishimoto not being able to write women very well, which he's admitted to.

However, I notice misogyny not only in fandom, but everywhere. Why are the more 'pressing' issues you stated any more 'pressing' than the hatred of female characters? In fact, I see more bashing of women from het fans than I do from yaoi fans. Yaoi fans usually just turn girls into non-factors.

Het fans, I tend to see from personal experience, are the ones who bash any love interest that is not their OTP yet interferes with it.

I can get annoyed at that if I want. I can also get annoyed of people not liking characters that aren't typical bishounen or bishoujo (the bishoujo thing is kind of bs, since there is no such thing as a not pretty looking girl in anime or an overweight/big nosed/way too curly haired herione or something). I can be a feminist and care about all of those issues equally.

I don't think I'm a victim and I don't think fictional characters are victims, because they are fictional. I can just roll my eyes and disagree with someone's fandom opinion or character bashing, note that they are sexist if they TRULY are (you can hate a female character and not be sexist) in my head, and maybe rant a bit like I would with anything else.

You know, people are people.

You need to stop singling out a group and talking about how much they whine or feel victimized. Every group feels victimized when they focus on the negative. A feminist can feel victimized if she constantly looks at female bashing, sexism in fandom, etc., or takes examples in real life.

But she can not care about that and instead just admire strong women and want progressive change to social constructs ingrained into our society.

Same with any class minority. A minority can rant about whitey/straight people/men/etc. all they want, they are entitled to. But many do things for their communities and live normal lives, outside of a few gripes and rants.

People whine about the war. People whine about Bush. People whine about discrimination. People whine about how gay marriage is ruining marriage. People whine about how immigrants are mixing with the majority race too much and taking too many privelages. People whine about women wanting too many privelages. People whine about the patriarchy. People whine about whitey, people whine about non-whitey.

Please, take a step back and see that EVERYONE is so much alike. You just are letting this bother you because UR SEXIST LOL. I kid.

But honestly, all you're doing is being a negative nancy. When someone is upset and rants, it has nothing to do with their affiliation. It's the person they are.

So stop with the fundamental attribution error and stop attributing it to their race/gender/political affiliation. Please.

I knew someone just like that when I was that age. Fortunately for both of us he didn't snap but it could have happened so easily.

Then too, it's hard to tell what the impetus was. The need for the fantasy might have just been there or there might have been something else going on. Any way you look at the situation it's a sad one but it's not your fault for playing make-believe.

6. Oh, that ain't so bad. When my boyfriend and I watched that film, we went on and on about the unmistakable chemistry and lust between she and her father. Which of course leads to the fact that Richis accepts the dirty laddie only once he reeks, somewhere, of his Little Girl.

I agree, though. There should be fic. And it should be sumptuous as all get-out. Such promise. Anyone know where I might find some, any, any at all, for Perfume?

Re: #6

[identity profile] jillianetcetera.livejournal.com 2007-08-25 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, it's funny. I had heard of the book but not read it when I heard the film was coming out. When I saw that it starred Alan Rickman and Rachel Hurd-Wood (of Wendy Darling fame), I figured there'd be a minor, but devoted fanbase created. I have wanted to read the book for some time, but it is not available at any of my sorry local libraries, and I rarely buy new books (being poor white trash), but one would think it'd be just the thing that at least a few girls (and/or boys) would rally round in a fannish way, given the film. It's sad! I want dirty stories with mouthwatering language, now!

1. She's a badass.

6. Holly unreadable secret Batman.

12. I don't understand these games kids today play, that might be related to the fact that the last time I sat down to play there was this thing called Atari [you may have heard of it, it's supposed to be buried in the desert], pong was the rage. :D

Now you have these games with plot, and pairings, and slash.

14. Games are supposed to help develop creativity in kids, plus it is a natural part of the learning process. You just played a fun play pretendy game with your friend, like hundreds of millions of kids have been doing for centuries.

It wasn't your fault.

23. LET IT RIP. Ahhhhhhhhh, Beyblade. 8D I loved all the characters! Especially Yuriy/Tala, Kai, Ray, Max, Kenny/Kyouju, Hilary/Hiromi... WHY DO I REMEMBER ALL THIS? The second season had me caught between Kai/Ray and Kai/Hilary though. Yes, I did ship it and thought it could have been the most adorable thing in the world. Although there are sooooo many badfics out there where Kai gets turned into a way more angstier character than he is and Ray becomes a little, pansy virgin who gets topped by Kai all the time.

I remember my early high school days where every Beyblade fic I read had a bajillion Mary Sues where the most mysterious girl caught Kai's eye and they would like, have sex when the characters were only 12~13. SURE, they got a bit older later but you know lololol.

P.S. BROOKLYN ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

SDkfjsdklfjlj Bryan/Boris-- AH MAN. I FORGOT TALA AND BRYAN'S LAST NAMES. D8 I need to look for my fanart folder again, why is this making me into a ridiculously excited fangirl.

I wrote badfics before. 8D It was fabulous back then, but I cringe now. I'ma rewrite it thanks to seeing Beyblade fans + this secret.

PS. BROOKLYN IS SO MUCH LOVE WHAT. THIRD SEASON = BRUTAL + WHOO.

LOL

"I say fandom isn't misogynist, it's just dumb yaoi fangirls, so despite all the double standards, usage of terms like 'whore' and 'slut,' and unrealistic expectations for female characters, everyone should just believe me and stop complaining! And if you ever do get bitchy in response to a blatantly misogynistic comment--oh, sorry, SILLY JOKE THAT WAS OBVIOUSLY NOT SEXIST AT ALL DESPITE CLEARLY SAYING THAT IF YOU'RE WEAK AND CLINGY AND DISLIKABLE YOU MUST BE FEMALE--then you're a horrible person! P.S. according to my divine judgment it's far more important to deal with other things in fandom, because misogyny doesn't exist."

19. :/ I really have to disagree. I wouldn't say it's more misogynistic than the real world, but I've encountered too much "female=inferior" thinking in fandom to say that it's much better. Some people do just look for things to be upset about, but it's ridiculous to say that the "yaoi fantards" who hate female characters just for existing aren't at least a little motivated by the misogyny that is still a huge problem in the world.
