Happy Sunday/Monday Everyone!

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
How was the first week of the new year? Did you keep your resolutions?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, a lot of people dislike Firefly--it got cancelled, remember?

That said, one episode isn't a great sample size for any show...but based on the complaints you have, you probably won't like the rest of it either. :/

I like your list. Do you have fics?

I like Firefly, but I often feel like it looms larger in the minds of its fans than its overall quality merits.

Insofar as feeling like you're the only SF fan not to like something that everybody else likes — that's exactly how I feel about [RECENT SACRED SCI-FI COW REDACTED], so... I can relate, anon.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you watch the actual pilot or the episode FOX aired first? Honestly though, it's 13 episodes and a movie. Just watch it so you can at least get the references.

In changing characters from male to female, do you also change the way they'd be perceived by the other characters, how their roles in the story would change because of it, and how that change might affect the overall story?

Otherwise, I can't really see the point of it. Especially in these fandoms you've given as examples, where it's pretty damn clear that women need to know their place.

Changing their gender would likely change everything about and around the characters, which I've always thought was meant to be the point. Or are you just changing the pronouns in the name of being progressive? Not that it matters much, but I find genderswap that does only that to be tiresome and a bit pointless.

Could be worse. They could be writing like DeviantART.

#I don't understand #what are you talking about #perfectly normal #conversation going on here

Agreed. The general decorum of Tumblr is part of why I struggle to participate over there... When did they all collectively decide to stop using grammar and punctuation? When did it become more fun to post an overused "reaction gif" in lieu of genuine comments, criticism, and conversation?

I think I just have to accept the fact that Tumblr is a language I just don't speak.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to be the exact same way. Nowadays...well, the sex/biology aspects of it still creep me the fuck out, but some of the world building/exploring aspects can be really interesting when handled that way. Despite not actually liking the kink itself, I've enjoyed more than a few stories involving alpha/omega dynamics.

...of course, a large part of this might be because I prefer my shipping without porn and I skip those bits all the time anyway. It must be harder for people who want the sex scenes to turn them on. :/

They probably did do that.

"OMFG I Am SCreAMING" - No, you're not. You know most of the people who have intentionally quirky slice of life photos - they're reaction is about as fake as the incident they're retelling.

You'd think after so many years people would move on to a different Random Animal/food Mascot than waffles and penguins and llamas.

What about seared tuna and the fruit bat.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
...this is actually one of the least annoying things about Tumblr, imo. I got used to text speak showing up in other areas years ago, and this is pretty much just an extension of that.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand. I find this freaky, too. Especially the general concept of Omegas as being complete slaves to their bodies and generally helpless against everything. It really creeps me out.

I'll have to put it to the test on Tuesday when I return to class.

And FauxKaren in 1...2...3...

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it necessarily makes you a neurotic, insufferable douchebag. But it might detract from the originality of your work and end up creating something so full of tropes that it comes across as cliche or predictable. You probably need to tread lightly with these kinda things, I mean the strongest writing out there is so powerful because it is genuine. Too many references and foreshadowing and you dilute your voice, which makes the writing seem weaker.

I liked Firefly for what it was, but in the end, after hearing various things about what Joss was planning to do with the show, I'm glad it ended where it did.

(Dollhouse, however, I wish had had more time to really unfold at a reasonable pace.)

God, I hope it doesn't, cause I think like this too sometimes? (Though I don't construct the story with that thinking, I just wonder how people would analyze it later on.)

That picture is pretty cool.

That's a common problem in fandom. People take things too seriously.
