everything was so generic and bland about this movie

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm a bit surprised that people thought it was better than Thor and/or on par with the first Iron Man film.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I can see why people struggle with choosing between thor and cap but iron man was superior to them without argument

lol. I am such a unique and special snowflake when it comes to these movies.

Because my ranking would be:

1. Captain America
2. Iron Man 2
3. Thor
4. Iron Man
5. Hulk

IDEK. I JUST HAVE REALLY AWFUL TASTE, APPARENTLY.

rant incoming

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
da

I wanted to like Thor, but everything felt so forced. Thor's friends seemed to be just there as accessories so Thor didn't seem like a total douchebag, the love interest was coming a miles away and while it wasn't executed as badly as I was expecting, I never really cared about Jane (that was her name, right?) nor could see what Thor liked about her. She just seemed like this manufactured "you've got to like her!" kind of character and her sidekick was "oh so unique and witty" and Asgard looked so incredibly fake, pretty as it was, and Loki seemed interesting but there was something off (rushed to fit a movie, I guess) about his character trajectory, and Thor was all right, I guess, but I was more interested in all the other characters like the Norse ones.

Captain America was formulaic, but I thought it was a better movie within those constraints.

nice heroes are boring, we all want to see more jerkfaces grudgingly doing the right thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It's possible to have a "nice" hero and still be interesting. See: Spider-Man.

oh this tired-ass argument. you can make a good movie with a nice hero. but the cap one wasn't one of them
kaijinscendre: (Default)

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2013-02-10 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it has to do with a "nice" character. It is more that Captain America doesn't seem to have any flaws in that movie. Courageous. Strong. Loyal. Friendly. Born Leader. Fucking artistic. You can go on. It is just like Superman. They are *too good*. When you compare them to someone like Thor (or even Spiderman) who has character flaws, Captain America is just boring.

Jerkfaces doing the right thing are more of a cliche nowadays than nice heroes, it seems.

I found Cap really refreshing because he WASN'T that.

lol. It's my favorite of the pre-Avengers movies.

Oop.

I just really liked the mid-20th century B-movie feel of it all.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Mine too. :)

I just really like Steve Rogers, okay.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It's pretty much my favorite too, but I still find the Red Skull to be pretty blah.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Its my favorite too. I love the color direction and Steve Rodgers is a perfect human being.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 12:07 am (UTC)(link)

same here :) And I loved the costumes and hair/makeup.. I'm a sucker for period pieces. I wish we had more superhero period pieces tbh.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I loved all the other MCU films, but this one just wasn't that interesting. It was the type of vanilla action hero movie that everything else is a subversion of. Basic archetypal goodie goodie hero (who works excellently as the straight man alongside several anti-hero types, but is boring by himself), basic archetypal 'Hitler Demon' villain, and basic action plot. It had good acting, good lines, and some very good side characters, but not enough to make up for it.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
IDK, when "everything else" is a subversion, playing it straight becomes a subversion in itself, which made it interesting to me. And when the characters, acting, and writing are strong enough, I can still enjoy a basic, played-straight storyline.

God I hate Captain America. It was so fucking boring, I haven't even rewatched it. Maybe it is better a second go around?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I hated thor after watching int second time so idk

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Well it was a movie about American patriotism. It is generic and bland to Americans.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Well it was a movie about American patriotism.

You really think so? I went into the movie expecting it to be like that and came out surprised (and pleased, ngl) at how much the patriotic elements were downplayed in favor of an emphasis on humanism.
