I KNOW RIGHT? I mean, that's not the only thing that's cringe-worthy about those covers, but that's what bothers me the most.

That's one benefit of ereaders v. printed copies of books, I guess. You don't have to look at the cover art unless you want to.

Typically pretty girls sell things. Companies are loath to risk not making as much money.

IS THIS ME? Because I had the same problem with these covers; the first book was okay but after that, the model for Alexia got progressively skinnier and her skin got lighter until the Alexia on the last book cover looked nothing like the one in the book. Ugh.

The issue was actually brought up with the author on LJ and she didn't seem to have a problem with it. Maybe she doesn't care, I don't know, but I'd personally be pissed if my publisher was misrepresenting my heroine on my covers.

I absolutely hate it when characters on the cover do not look as they're supposed to look. It's not just about skinniness/fatness, it's everything. When a hero is a brunette but the cover designer makes them blond - or when it is stated that their eyes are blue, but they're green on the cover. Or when they're short instead of being tall. It looks like the designer and the publisher neither liked the book nor read it properly.

My sympathies, OP. Although I have no idea what this book is.

[personal profile] ninety6tears 2013-02-13 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
That's some bullshit on the part of the publishers. This reminds me of hearing about a fantasy series that's supposed to have dark-skinned main characters but the models on the covers are always white.

Exaggerating any remotely thin woman as a size zero is annoying but that's for another discussion I guess.

And oddly enough, they get her outfit 100% right on the covers. I'd kind of like her to have more of a nose like she does in the books at that.

[personal profile] greysmoke 2013-02-13 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
The author normally has to at the very least approve the covers. Obviously this doesn't mean that they can't be manipulated into approving them, but technically they need to be approved. Or that's how it always was for books my family published (I am not trying to sound up myself, I actually hate them for being literary snobs).

These books look interesting, though. I must investigate.

Agreed! The author mentions repeatedly that she's full-figured and has a dark complexion and the lady on the cover is typical sexychix fantasy art. Generally speaking, I don't like it when someone tries to realistically depict a fictional character on a book cover, but this is one of the most irritating offenders.

I have too many books to read @_@

I saw this a few days ago. Just whut? Everyone knows Anne is a redhead. That is one of the first things said about her. Her red hair is a staple. People in PEI must be ready to start a lynch mob.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
What fantasy or sci-fi books accurately represent the female lead on the cover? I can only think of Saturn's Children (starring a robot prostitute.)

UGH, yes, thank you! These are pretty much my favorite books in the world (brilliant chubby heroine, steampunk, and well-written canon gay and lesbian characters...why isn't the fandom exploding?) but the cover model always bothered me. She's lovely, of course, but she isn't Alexia AT ALL. The first book's cover is the best but it just gets worse from there.

Especially since Alexia is never really called "curvy" or anything...she's just BIG. Tall, chubby, etc. Carriger never tiptoed around it, which is amazingly awesome to me.

This series is rad, and Gail Carriger is a super-nice lady :D

I have nothing else to add, really, just that I'm glad there are other folks who read this series!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Ew. Really, on a book cover? We really don't need bland size zeros everywhere...

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm actually going to say (and this comes from at least ten years of reading publishers, editors, and agent blogs), don't blame the publishers. The publishers have to sell books (hell, it's quite literally their job), and they can't do that if the book distributors (Barnes and Noble, Amazon, etc) refuse to carry the book because the covers don't fall within certain standards that THEY think will sell.

Of course, that's becoming less of a problem with e-books and self publishing, but for publishers who are selling brick-and-mortar style books, they don't get the final say.

Okay, yes, fat-shaming and erasure and bad cover artworks are bad, BUT -

That cover model is not a size zero. Thin, yes, but more likely around a 4. Just like not all larger people are a generic 'size large,' not all thin people are zeros.
