It was made by Touchstone, which is a Disney label.

And, actually if you look at the more recent merchandise, you'll see that Disney is just straight up putting its label on it now (which, again, it can legally do since technically Nightmare has always been a Disney property). I guess once it became popular, Disney decided to take credit for it.

If it's Disney enough for Kingdom Hearts, it's Disney enough for me.

Why not just say she's your favorite Disney character? Or Disney heroine?

Anyway, Sergeant Calhoun has basically supplanted all other heroines in my mind.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
She's not a "real" princess because she wasn't born into a royal family, OP.
(Still one of my favorite animated characters, though!)

Cinderella, Belle, and Tiana were also born of commoners, but they married royalty. Sally and Jack are a couple, and Jack is the King of Halloween, so Sally could become royalty

I really think the reason she's not regarded as a princess is because she's not the main character, nor is the love story the driving force of the film. She and Jack certainly have a love story but it is secondary to his obsession. There are other Disney princesses that aren't the main character (like Aladdin), but in those movies the love story is still the main plot. Sally doesn't fill the narrative role of a Disney princess, so it really doesn't feel like the same kind of story.

How about because she wouldn't look the same in a sparkly ballgown.

Why does every female Disney character have to be labeled a princess in order to be considered great? I don't understand this and it's something that is starting to really bother me.

This. Like, why not just say she's your favorite Disney character or lady or whatever? Why does it have to be Princess?

Disney has some truly awesome characters that never wore dresses (though Frollo maybe gets a pass for the robes) or had royal blood.

THIS.

Female characters can be awesome without being princesses.

It's bad enough that certain awesome characters who actually are princesses don't get the recognition they deserve. And by "certain awesome characters" I mean Kida.

I can think of a couple of reasons:

1. Merchandise. There's a ton of toys for the actual Disney Princess. Very little for anyone who is not. Being included means more merch, and some pretty quality stuff. Like a sorority, I guess.
2. Fandom. Since the franchise includes the most popular heroines, most of Disney's fandom tends to focus on these girls. There's tons of really superb fan art, graphics, communities and so on dedicated to these girls only.
3. Since people and Disney give priorities to the franchise girls, I can see fans of the other heroines feeling like their girl is left out. Some of them actually get irrationally angry at the franchise because of it.
4. Park stuff. The Disney princesses get more cast appearances, shows, and locations devoted to them.

I think it's because of the Disney Princesses line. They get a lot of merchandising and exposure and love. Basically, being called a Disney princess means recognition that a character is awesome, and that's why people want disctinctly un-princessly characters to be called princess, as near as I can figure.

Well girls cannot look up to a female character if she isn't labeled PRINCESS so yes I guess this is an important concern

I came here to say that Sally kicks ass. I wasn't expecting all the wank, but yeah, she isn't a princess. That doesn't take away from how awesome she is.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, except on the "unconventional appearance" thing.

Because once you take away the fact that everyone in the entire movie is supposed to be grotesque and strange, Sally becomes...completely conventional. Hourglass-figured beauty. There's even the scene with her leg where they play it up that she's a traditional sexpot.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
After the redesigns the Disney princesses got recently, I'll happily take Sally in her nonprincessy state.

She's a Disney Queen! (Assuming she and Jack got married, which I totally say they did.)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
She's not a princess, she's a damn Queen.
