I live in the Philadelphia suburbs, and there are at least 5 accents I can identify within an hour's drive in any direction from me, so it happens here too.

And sometimes it's just fans wanting their fave m/m couple to have a kids that biologically both of theirs.

Maybe you're just having a bit of a plateau IRL in terms of things to get excited over? Your brain and imagination latched onto something new for the escapism. I don't think it's something to worry about too much - these things wax and wane in my experience. But if it's worrying you, perhaps you could take up a new RL project too? Maybe something you and your SO can do together.

I don't know. The Northern Californian accent sounds different to me than the Southern Californian accent. And the San Francisco accent sticks out like a sore thumb no matter where it goes.

I enjoyed the movie too OP. I went with a friend and she trashed it, but I thought it was fun. It definitely wasn't the smartest movie, but was a good mindless 3D romp.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-10 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Just do it and have fun. If you do it (shipping/meta/fic/whatever) with enough depth, how will people be able to tell it's just self insert fantasy?
(Besides the fact that they haven't even met in canon, I mean. Besides that.)

Okay, I am out of the loop. What does ASOIAF stand for?

A Song of Ice and Fire. That is, Game of Thrones.

I love Awakening <3 I think the characters are adorable and the plot isn't bad (in fact I've found a bunch of parts touching). I haven't had any problems with the game so far :/ I think a lot of complaints have come from the casual/no-death choice, but people just need to chill about it. You don't have to play casual if you don't pick the option, jeez.

I love doing this.

I don't spend a huge amount of time on it or do it one fandom at a time, though.

Irvin Yalom wrote an awesome book about the fear of death. Staring at the Sun. The guy is an American psychiatrist/psychotherapist, and I like him both as a writer and as a professional.

IDK if you're a kind of person seeking help in books, but if yes, I'd totally advise to read it. It is not a "reasonable arguments" sort of thing, rather a "how to live with this shit" one.

Man... I got hung up for the longest time trying to figure out how it was possible that you'd never come across a story where a female was pregnant... you couldn't have worded that better?

Fandoms viewed from the outside

(Anonymous) 2013-03-10 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you ever take a step back from your fandom and realize how weird it must look to people who aren't in it?

I love reading discussions about fandoms I'm not in and trying to figure out what's going on in the canons by piecing together bits from those fan discussions, and trying to figure out which canons are really freaking weird and which ones just seem that way to me because of lack of context.

And today it also occured to me that I'm kind of sad I'm already a Homestuck fan, because discussions about Homestuck from the POV of a non-Homestuck are probably the most wonderfully bizarre thing ever.

Anything sci-fi is just begging to be over-analyzed. That's practically half the fun of the genre. Something like Doctor Who, which incorporates both time travel and space travel, along with a whole plethora of scifi technology? Yea, asking the fans not to over-analyze is asking for a miracle that's never going to come. If you can't just come to terms with that, you may want to just back away now to save your sanity.

Because people like to complain and overanalyze fandoms they're invested in. Honestly, it may seem oppressively negative, but widespread explosions of rage and bitching and whining and bashing is usually a sign that the canonical material is really substantive and meaningful and has a lot of things people like and care about. If it didn't, if they didn't care about it, they wouldn't be complaining about the parts that they didn't like, because they wouldn't be able to see any wasted or misused potential or think of any better ideas that the writers should have done.

Also, it's the hiatus. What are they supposed to do, gush pointlessly for four months? When there's such complaint-fodder as THAT facial expression? :D

(I'm curious though: which things were people complaining about the most? I can think of quite a few, but I haven't been keeping up with current fandom, and didn't even bother watching the Christmas special until a few weeks ago.)

Question from place of ignorance - does MPreg happen more often in sci-fi/fantasy fandoms than in dramas?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-10 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the anon who "explained" mpreg above (http://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/770698.html?thread=636534410#cmt636534410) and I will extrapolate from that explanation to say why there's no such thing as f-preg:

The "male" role of doing the impregnating is brief and boring. A meat tube squirts out some goo and then that's done. The "female" role of physically transforming into a baby-house is disgusting and amazing and much more visceral and engaging to read about, whether you're being titillated or horrified (or both) while reading.

So, it's exciting to imagine cis men experience pregnancy and delivery, but not so much to imagine cis women experience having impregnated their partners.

...Unless maybe, in order to impregnate someone, an author bestows a female character with a dick or a tenta-dick or some similar equipment. But that is kind of going off topic into another kink altogether.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-10 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It sort of makes sense, though. Slash is way more popular on the internet the femslash. Also, if you want to read/write pregnancy fic about a gay male couple, there's no option outside of the realms of fantasy. Lesbians are a bit luckier (they have to pay for a medical procedure, but at least they don't have to move heaven and earth in order to become parents to the same extent as the men). So, if you want to read/write about pregnancy for them, there's no pressing need to leave realism behind.

I seriously hate A03

(Anonymous) 2013-03-10 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. I looked up Catherine (video game) section on there in hopes of fresh fic, since I finished it recently, and was starved for fandom.

There were 5 stories listed. Not bad, I thought.

All crossovers. Avengers, Supernatural, Sherlock, Doctor Who, Homestuck.

ARGH! I don't have any problem with crossovers but WHERE'S THE ACTUAL FIC FOR THE DAMN GAME?

(Sorry btw if this offends anyone. I'm not trying to say anything about the quality of the fics itself, just exasperation over how...saturated selected fandoms are over there. -_- )

Periods

(Anonymous) 2013-03-10 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Question. My periods are very irregular, but I've noticed a slight pattern among them. Seems the more painful they are, the shorter they are. The less painful usually lasts a full 7-8 days whereas if I'm puking and curled up in pain and near tears then it can last as short as 2 days. Anyone else have a similar experience?

Yeah. I'm not sure what's stranger - MorMor, where one half of the pairing is non-existent, or this.

I read one, a long time ago. It was Ginny/Hermione I think.

This probably doesn't count, but I have mods in my Sims games that let females impregnate each other. And some people write stories with their Sims so maybe there's something out there that has it.
