Fandom references in stuff?

[personal profile] writerserenyty 2013-05-11 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey guys!

I'm in the home stretch for finishing degree, and for a big final paper I'm writing about spectatorship, audience theory, and fandom, basically about different ways that fans interact.

I want to write a lot about how media has either embraced or rejected fandom, and what this has to say.

I'm already including:
- fanfic references in 30 Rock and Parks & Rec
- The convention episode of Supernatural (I haven't seen this yet but my sister has)
- the fanvid parody in Community
- vague references to ship names in things like Castle

Are there any big ones I've missed? I feel like there has to be.

Are you specifically looking for things where a work of fiction references fandom / the fact that it has a fandom?

Yes, that's exactly what I'm looking for; sorry if I wasn't clear!

Things where a work of fiction references either the idea of fandom (i.e Ben on Parks and Rec talking about writing Star Trek fanfiction) or their own fandom (i.e. on Castle when they specifically use the term 'Caskett')

I would take a look at TVTropes page on Breaking the Fourth Wall. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BreakingTheFourthWall

And Leaning on the Fourth Wall.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LeaningOnTheFourthWall

And especially Lampshade Hanging.

There's a character in Supernatural who is a fan and writes wincest fanfic of Chuck's version of Sam and Dean - Becky: http://www.supernaturalwiki.com/index.php?title=Becky

Perhaps you could mention MLP and the whole Derpy Hooves debacle, if that fits in your paper?

Stargate SG-1 has a few, Wormhole X-treme and 200, and Citizen Joe spring to mind.

I'm pretty sure that CSI has had episodes with different fandoms, at least 'Fur and Loathing' (with furries) and 'A Space Oddity' (scifi convention). I don't think that they've addressed their own fandom, though.

Re: Fandom references in stuff?

Oh! There's an episode in The Simpsons in which there's a convention around Stargate SG-1, and Patty and Selma kidnap Richard Dean Anderson. There's a small scene in the convention itself. http://simpsons.wikia.com/wiki/Kiss_Kiss_Bang_Bangalore

There's also an episode with Mark Hamill in a Star Wars convention (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayored_to_the_Mob), and a Tree House of Horror with a Xena convention (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treehouse_of_Horror_X)

I dunno if webcomics are in the scope of what you're looking at, but if they are - Homestuck. Just. Homestuck.

Galaxy Quest

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
If you haven't seen Galaxy Quest, go watch it. It's one of the best portrayals of scifi fandom ever. It skewers some of the silly/embarrassing aspects of fandom, but does it in a very loving, non-offensive way.

a rare video game example

[personal profile] tyger66 2013-05-11 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Dragon Age 2 has a character who writes "friend-fiction" about other characters in the game. Not a direct reference, but it brought a smile to my face, and I thought it was unusual for that kind of thing to be in a video game.

Also Psych has a lot of tongue-in-cheek jokes that clearly have the shippers in mind. (ex: Shawn refers to a team-up of himself and Lassiter as "Shassie" - the online name for the ship)

Ooh, the fanfic stuff in p&r is really good.

I think there was an episode of Criminal Minds where there's people dressing up for a convention (I think someone dressed up as Amy Pond). Buffy might have? I know Glee has a habit with the shipping names too (and referencing "angry lesbian bloggers"). Northern Exposure has an episode where the characters talk about having a certain plot that won't appeal to their audience.

For the Supernatural one, do you mean the one where the characters go into an alternate reality where they are the actors for the show? I think that's a big one where they break the fourth wall (and the other episode where a character writes fanfic about the brothers and makes fun of the writers/fandom, but I don't know the names of the eps since I'm not in the fandom).

It's tiny, but there's always Willow's reference to her 14-year-old self writing Doogie Howser fanfic on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Also, in addition to ship references in Castle, there's also an entire episode centered around a sci-fi convention, where we find out that Beckett is a huge fan of a shortlived show, to the point that I think she ran a local fan club or did watch parties or something in her youth and in this episode was taking part in a cosplay event. It was episode 5.6, The Final Frontier, and is available on Hulu Plus.

In one episode of Monk, Monk finds a fan of his work who acts like a fan of the show in a very fourth-wall-melting way. She even mentions fanfiction.

Um, there is also MS Paint Adventures, which has embraced fandom as its life-blood, but that one is probably worth an entire whole paper just for it.

I forgot if someone mentioned this in the thread, but Avatar: The Last Aibender/The Legend of Aang has an entire episode ("The Ember Island Play", or something like that?) that makes fun of fandom, initial character concepts and things like that. The creators also had a presentation in a convention that made light-hearted fun of shipping, and I think there was a short animation on Nickelodeon's site that made fun of shipping too, with all the characters in a school setting.

There are a lot of Lost references on 30 Rock as well. 30 Rock is chock full of references to practically everything!

Dwight from The Office wrote a Star Wars fanfic in one of the earlier seasons.

.hack//G.U. is a series of offline console games set in a fictional MMORPG. There's a message board where NPCs draw fanart of the main characters, gossip about them and discuss what new merchandise they'd like to buy. One famous male player has a legion of fangirls, including a character who posts a sort of fanfic about him, and says she'll be selling 'secret screenshot collections' of him at a convention.

Basically it's a video game where everyone you meet is a video game nerd, and it's wonderful.

There was an episode of Futurama called Where No Fan Has Gone Before about the Star Trek fanbase. In the future, Star Trek is outlawed due to its fans creating a Star Trek religion, resulting in wars that killed a lot of people. The original cast still exists, exiled to some distant planet, where they are kidnapped by an obsessed fan.

If you're willing to include older stuff, there is Niven/Pournelle/Flynn's "Fallen Angels" which is basically 400 pages of this:

http://www.amazon.com/Fallen-Angels-ebook/dp/B005BJTZ1U/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1368319708&sr=1-1&keywords=%22fallen+angels%22+pournelle+niven+flynn

(Oooo an ebook version whups there goes my tattered paperback ha ha.)

In written SF (pre-Internet) the term for what you're looking for is "recursive SF" (but you prolly already know that).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recursive_science_novel

Also NESFA's master list of recursive SF works across all genres, which I'm sure you've already seen:

http://www.nesfa.org/Recursion/

I have read good reviews of Barry Malzberg's "Gather in the Hall of the Planets" but have never gotten round to reading it (also before I saw just now that Amazon has an ebook of it, I was waiting to find a copy in a used bookstore):

http://www.amazon.com/Gather-Hall-Planets-ebook/dp/B005OAHF36/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1368319840&sr=1-1&keywords=malzberg+gather+in+the+hall+of+planets

I am uncertain if it is anything else like the rest of Malzberg's work, which is mind-bending at times, but I like that about Malzberg.

And Malzberg's thoughts on yaoi:

http://www.nesfa.org/Recursion/recursive_Malzberg.htm

Malzberg also mentions Vonnegut, but most of Vonnegut's references are a little too obscure for my average brain to get LOL.

Robert Sawyer is definitely One of Us, and so includes a lot of SF references in his works. Particularly the Hominids/Humans/Hybrids trilogy.

Time After Time (Good movie, though dated now.) is mentioned on the Wiki cited above.

That's all I can think of at the moment, but I used to be really interested in that subgenre, so. Good luck with your paper!

There are four super super meta episodes of Supernatural.

ep 4.18 - "The Monster at the End of This Book" - the boys discover there is a series of books called "Supernatural" that details all of their exploits until the end of season three. They discover the existence of "Dean girls", "Sam girls", and slash fanfiction.

ep 5.01 - "Sympathy for the Devil" - this episode gives us the introduction of Becky, a fangirl of the Supernatural book series. When we meet her, she is writing Wincest. (Really, really, BAD Wincest.)

ep 5.09 - "The Real Ghostbusters" - Sam & Dean get conned by Becky into going to a convention for the Supernatural books, and are surrounded by people cosplaying as them and LARPing aspects of their life.

ep 6.15 - "The French Mistake" - Sam & Dean get sent to an alternate universe where magic doesn't exist, and they're Jensen Ackles and "something called a Jared Padelecki" on the show called "Supernatural".

There's other episodes with references to other fandoms and fandom stuff in general, but those four really enjoy poking fun at themselves, the fans, and everything about the Supernatural fandom.

I can't remember if it was actually on the show or me musing out loud, but on a recent ep of The Big Bang Theory Sheldon found out that the show Alphas was cancelled. Leonard suggested Sheldon come up with his own ending; only after that I can't remember if there was an actual reference to fanfiction, or if I was thinking out loud and wondering what fanfics written by him would be like. (I was disappointed it didn't happen haha)

In a 2nd season ep of the anime Durarara!!, the female otaku character squees about doujinshi (fan comics, often porny) for the fandom's slash OTP, Izaya/Shizuo. That pairing was VERY popular IRL in Japan.

I'm not sure which ep it is, but I'm rewatching and can give you a number soon, if you're interested.

Psych has a lot, but one that's really chock full of stuff is Not Even Close... Encounters

A full summary's on the wiki page, but in short (SPOILERS FOR THE EP) it's about a lawyer who believes his assistant has been abducted by aliens. Even by the main two characters - who are self-proclaimed nerds - he's treated as weird and paranoid (a bit of nerd hierarchy in action). Things kick into gear when they enlist the help of a fellow nerdy UFO obsessee, a man who is a secret!nerd because he's afraid of being anything but a tough muscly jock in front of his girlfriend.

The secret!nerd's got a whole hidden room of scifi memorabilia and old TV/movie props. Unlike the UFO guy, this is treated as an amazing thing by the two main characters. They tell the secret!nerd that several props are NECESSARY for their continued investigation, and in the next scene they're spying on a guy while wearing a helmet from the original BSG and Geordi La Forge's VISOR.

At the end the girlfriend finds out about the secret!nerd's fandom activities and gets mad because she's been a nerd this whole time too, but the secret!nerd's always talked down about scifi stuff, so she's kept quiet too. He admits that a previous out-of-town "business conference" was really him just going to ComicCon, and she's like "omg! I would've loved to go to that too!" And they both make up and become unsecret nerds.
