So you read 7 books of a series (or watched 8 movies) where two of the three main characters are not people you particularly like.

I only watched the movies, is there a lot of stuff in the books not pertaining to Harry?

Secret because...? I don't mind either of them, but you aren't alone, anon. (Especially not with Ron. Everyone and their aunt will admit to hating Ron.)

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Not liking Ron is one thing, but I can't see myself reading seven books that are primarily about a character I don't care for.

Mine, too. I don't dislike them by any means, but I like everyone else so much more. (Shameless Percy fan forever, even if it might be mostly because of fanon characterizations.)

That's acceptable. Harry is flat out my least favorite. I think he's an idiot.

I didn't have strong feelings about Ron one way or the other, but I totally feel you about Harry. As much as I enjoyed the series, the main character increasingly irritated me. I suspect book 5 may be my favorite, but I spent the entire thing wanting to throw the perspective character at a wall.

I was reading someone's readalong of the first book (they never got much farther than Ithink just them getting to hogwarts), and she considered him kind of a....blankslate/everyman. Just for us to see the WIzarding World, and didn't consider him much of a character (but this is very early into the first book, so....)I can understand that, it makes it easier to get through.

Back when I was still in the HP fandom, Harry was pretty much the least-liked character in general.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Ron a lot, actually, but I can see why people don't like him. Harry... to me, he's the protagonist who has to sometimes be a bit of a standoffish jerk. If you're going to run into the fire and face things head-on, you can't be a soft person. So while I don't like him too much as a person, I do love following his character.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Tough read then, dude.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)

I can understand why you wouldn't like ginger pubes. He isn't just a ginger, but a horrible, horrible person whose family is just as bigoted as the bad guys but in a different way.

Not sure why you wouldn't like Harry, a worst he is a little bland and wangsty, but so are 90% of "heroes".

I recommend searching out fics in which Hermione is the central character and Ron is dead. The Girl Who Chose is a far more interesting character, even in canon, than the much more cliched Boy Who Lived.

I liked Ron and Harry, but they were far from my favorite characters or the characters I found to be most interesting. My favorites were Remus and Tonks. However, while there are so many great characters, I doubt I could read the books if I hated Harry, considering it's his POV.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-10 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with you about Ron. He annoyed the heck out of me (hence why I don't ship Ron/Hermione, I can't ship a couple if I don't like one of them.)

I can get why Harry would annoy you, but overall Harry's not too bad.

But you said "least favorite" - do you actively dislike them or if you're ranking them they come in last and you're just indifferent to them when reading? Can you explain further, OP?

OP here

(Anonymous) 2013-07-10 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I read the books starting when I was nine, and I fell in love with the world, and with the culture that came with it. I went to the midnight release of the 6th book, won free tickets to the fifth movie, got sorted on Pottermore, and just recently went to the park at Universal. (I was sick for the release of DH.)

But honestly it feels to me like everything Harry did he did because he was told to/forced to by someone else. It felt like he didn't make any decisions for himself and as such didn't feel like much of a character to me.

And if anyone cares, my top five characters are Sirius, Lupin, McGonagall, Luna, and Percy, in that order.

I hated most of the Weasleys but didn't really have an opinion one way or the other about Harry. Which is surprising when I think about it since he's the main guy.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-10 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't HATE them, but I thought they were boring as fuck.

All my favourite characters in the series, the ones I thought were the most interesting, were the minor characters (mostly the adults). IDK if this has negative implications about Ms. Rowlings' writing (the more she writes about you the less interesting you become!) or just the unfortunate results of having a 3rd person limited pov centered on a blank slate like Harry.

But that's why there's fanfic, and there's some damn good fanfic. (GreenGecko somehow manages to use the same PoV with the same Harry and make him both more interesting and more likable to me.)

I found the Malfoys far more fascinating than Harry ever was. Ron...got better. He kind of had to grow on me.

The whole series would have been vastly improved upon if Neville had turned out to be the hero...shit, now I'm thinking of an epic misunderstanding type fic where it's written from Harry's point of view but Neville's the one who finally offs Voldemort.

I neither have the skill nor the familiarity with the canon to do it justice. Recs along those lines, maybeplz?

[Picture is Harry Potter and Ron Weasley in a promotional picture from the film series "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets". They look in their early teens. Harry has short brown hair and blue eyes and he is wearing round glasses. Ron has short red hair and gray eyes. They both have pale skin and are wearing a uniform consisting of a white shirt, a red and gold stripped tie, a gray vest with a small red and yellow stripe near the edge of the collar and a black robe thing over it all.]

They are two of my least favorite characters in the entire series.

Harry in the films struck me as an empty catalyst where a person should be and Ron the standard comic relief. Wasn't a dealbreaker to watching the whole series, though, I'm used to most protagonists being the least interesting parts of their own stories, existing only to serve as a viewfinder for all the cool stuff.
