Trayvon Martin Case:WTF

(Anonymous) 2013-07-13 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I recently was looking into this case, and wow. His parents are a-holes.

He wasn't even living with his parents, but with his aunt and uncle. A short time after his death, his mother trademarked his name. Both his parents then went around collecting large sums of money in donations.

The media is also really pushing for Zimmerman to be white. While he is half-white, he clearly looks Hispanic/identifies as Latino. What also is weird is that the media keeps showing lighter and lighter images of Zimmerman, I don't really get why. I also cringed when I learned that there had been enough time for Trayvon to walk home while Zimmerman was on the phone. He instead circled back to fight him. If he had just gone home...

Yes, go home and show the person that is following me where I live. Brilliant plan.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-13 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
He lost track of him. He was essentially in the clear. If he had run, Zimmerman would have never found him. It was a worse idea to circle back and jump the crazy person who was following you. And it really WAS a bad idea, as it got him shot.

He had also been suspended from school for having a large amount of drugs in his backpack, which is why he was visiting there in the first place.(He sold it at school). He didn't make a lot of good life choices, honestly.

So he totally deserved to be shot and killed, right? JFC this case really brings out the ugly in people.

The whole lighting of Zimmerman comes down to one thing, scandal. The fact that scandal equals ratings and clicks. A brown on black murder isn't as scandalous as a white on black murder. Murders between black and latinos happen every day in places like Florida and California thanks to gangs and the drug war. But white on black murder is rarer. And, again, therefore, more scandalous.

Re: Trayvon Martin Case:WTF

(Anonymous) 2013-07-13 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah but otoh, the guy had a gun and harassed and subsequently shot a teenager

Re: Trayvon Martin Case:WTF

(Anonymous) 2013-07-13 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I think he should be charged with manslaughter, for sure. But I don't think it's what the media made it out to be: A racist white man followed a thirteen year old and shot him and his skittles. Zimmerman may very well be racist, but he wasn't/doesn't identify as white. Trayvon wasn't thirteen, and he was more than interested in fighting the crazy guy who was following him, instead of just going home. They both made huge mistakes, and it ended very badly.

Re: Trayvon Martin Case:WTF

(Anonymous) 2013-07-13 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Two points here.

First of all, yes, both Martin and Zimmerman made mistakes, but there is a fundamental difference in the nature and the magnitude of the mistakes that they made, in general and especially in the sense of moral responsibility. Zimmerman initiated a totally unnecessary, ridiculous confrontation knowing that he had a gun, and then shot Martin; that's fundamentally different from Martin making the wrong choice in confronting the guy instead of running away, which was a mistake (obviously a mistake in hindsight, probably not the right choice in the moment), but not of the same nature. And I think it's tremendously false to imply that their mistakes were on the same level and that they therefore share equally in the guilt (which you may not have meant but which I think you did imply).

Two, whether or not the crime was racist, the reaction to the crime has been profoundly shaped by the race of Martin in particular. I really, really think that there's no way that the culture would be so willing and eager and enthusiastic in finding every flaw in Trayvon Martin's character and every mistake he ever made, and implying that these things lead to his death and "but for this...", were he not African American. That dynamic has been totally shaped by his race (and the dynamics that go with it).

At the end of the day, Trayvon Martin was not perfect and he may have made some poor choices, both in his life and on the night in question. But he's still fundamentally the victim here. He wasn't the one who started the confrontation; he wasn't the one who had a gun; he wasn't the one who shot the other one. But he is the one getting nitpicked. He was an imperfect human being but none of that meant that he deserved to get shot and the constant implication that it does mean that, or at least that he bears some of the moral responsibility for a grown-ass man with a pistol picking a fight with him when he was minding his own business, is totally wrong-headed.

I really like this piece on the whole thing and I think it gets at some of what I'm trying to say here: http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/07/11/3496085/zimmerman-trial-man-carrying-loaded.html

I wish they'd gone for manslaughter instead of murder. I believe Zimmerman was racist, but being a racist, even a racist gleefully planning to give someone a hard time, doesn't make you a murderer if you didn't intend to kill.

I'm still not convinced he's racist either. Paranoid definitely. Enough to buy a gun, a dog and take defense classes. So much so that he called 911 a shitton of times.

That doesn't make him racist. Just nuts.

Now you know that only applies to humans, and Florida (and the people who support this verdict) don't see blacks as humans.

Racist dipshits.

Re: Verdict: Not Guilty

Which is exactly the reason they should have charged him with manslaughter. There wasn't enough evidence to convict for murder 2. The jury had no choice but to determine guilty or not guilty of murder 2; they can't come back and say "Well, he's guilty of this thing you didn't charge him with instead." The prosecutor is the one who fucked this all up and actually knew it at the time, but it was easier to go with the higher charge knowing he'd skate and put the blame on the jury instead of looking soft by going with the charge they could actually convict on.

Florida, where it is still okay to hunt down black men. If you support this verdict, then you are a damn racist.

Or, you know, you understand Florida law. We can't just find someone guilty because we think they're terrible. That's why we have laws and not stonings.

Just remember that not guilty doesn't mean innocent.

Re: Trayvon Martin Case:WTF

(Anonymous) 2013-07-14 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't assume his parents are assholes just for trademarking his name and collecting donations. It's highly possible the mother trademarked his name for legal reasons, like to prevent others from doing it and then profiting off her dead son's name. IIRC Beyonce did the same with her child's name when s/he was born and it's simply a protective measure. donations are also pretty common (Zimmerman took quite a bit of money as well) and there can be a legitimate purpose for them, such as covering legal fees, funeral costs, or there can be a charity fund created in the victim's name. the latter is generally popular in cases that garner a lot of attention because people want to pitch their support with money.

They hired a financial consultant a week or so after his death. Pretty much a red flag to making their son a cash cow. They weren't even at court house today.

oh fuck you. when my cousin was shot, my family received a lot of donations and gifts from sympathetic people in the community. we established a scholarship in his name and we hired an accountant to help us because we didn't know what to do with that much money in regards to taxes. so fuck off
