"Female"

Why do people get so bent out of shape over the term?

Re: "Female"

personally it squicks me out cuz when i hear it i think of some nature documentary. to me it reduces people to their gender/sex identity and it's just kind of weird?? idk. i think it's best used as an adjective rather than a noun when you are referring to human beings.

Re: "Female"

(Anonymous) 2013-07-26 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends on context, but it can come off as very dehumanizing.

I don't mind it so much if people also use "male" in the same way, as a noun rather than an adjective. It's just icky when people say "men" but then use "females", and it just sounds dehumanizing, as though we're some animal species.

Men/women are the terms for humans, males/females are for any creature.

It depends entirely on the context.

"The female elephants are now entering the clearing..." Does not bother me.
"The female reproductive system..." Does not bother me.
"The males went to one locker room and the females to another" -- I question your writing style.
"The men went to one locker room and the females to another" Bothers me.

I feel like using 'female' -- or 'male', for that matter -- as a noun reduces the subject to their biology.

Re: "Female"

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-07-26 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
For me it depends on who's using it and why. If I say, "I'm female." I'm just announcing my sex... for whatever reason. Let's say I have one. If someone says, "That female" when referring to me I find it demeaning. In a way, I find it dehumanizing. There are lots of little details that can change the circumstance and tone, and therefore, how I receive it. I've had people call me it and I've been fine because in those particular situations it made sense. I've also had it been used dismissively in order to undermine whatever point or argument I was trying to make or establish. I was not okay with that because it dismissed my point not on its merits but on the fact I had a vagina. It made me "other".

But in all honesty, why do you care if someone doesn't like being called that? They don't like being called something so don't call them that. How difficult is it for you to not use a word for a couple people? I have a friend who doesn't like to be called by a certain nickname so do I use that nickname? No, because I'm not a dick. Most of the time. Well, I'm not a dick in this instance because I don't use it. I am a dick for completely different reasons.

So, how is this negatively affecting you? Like, really, why do you care?

Haha.

Yeah, I've had this issue.

(police/military drill male/female into you instead of man/woman, until it's second nature).

It seems a petty thing to get het up about, but to be fair, a lot of the guys who use 'females' are creepers.

Search me, dude.

I don't mind "male," either. They're just biological terms.

But I guess they both sound odd in an informal context, yeah.

Re: "Female"

(Anonymous) 2013-07-27 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose in certain contexts it can come off as dehumanizing, but I don't know how people often see it that it has become an issue. Like, it's a very narrow context in which it becomes a negative term, so it'd make more sense to get mad at the people who use it that way instead of the word itself.

Re: "Female"

(Anonymous) 2013-07-27 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really get this, either, but I am aware that it bothers people and I try to avoid it. It isn't easy for me because I worked for the government for a long time and we were required to say "female" and "male" instead of "woman" and "man" and it's a regular part of my speech now. But it's only in some internet places that people get upset and in RL it's still better for me to say "female" and "male" so I usually just try to avoid the issue online.

Because, in the English-speaking U.S., I never hear people using the word "males" to refer to men nearly as often as they use "females" to refer to women. Its usage is unequal for no reason I can see except to apparently belittle women more than men.

Also, it's grammatically incorrect when used the way I usually hear it. You say "female human" not "females"; it's an adjective. Salt in the wound, people.

It depends on whether it's being used as an adjective or a noun. If someone refers to me as "female" (adjective), then they have correctly identified my sex. If someone refers to me as "a female" (noun), then I start feeling like David Attenborough should be narrating my actions.

Re: "Female"

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-07-27 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Because it's a word that emphasizes biological sex. There's really no need to use it instead of "woman" unless you're trying to say LOOK IT'S A FEMALE! IT HAS A VAGINA INSTEAD OF A PENIS AND EVERYTHING! LOOK!

Re: "Female"

[personal profile] silverau 2013-07-27 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder the same thing since where I live it's a pretty common way to refer to girls and women casually. But I guess in some dialects it sounds dehumanizing because it's mostly used to refer to animals instead of people...

I get why it's controversial, but I don't agree with this attitude of "IF YOU CALL WOMEN FEMALES YOU ARE A DISGUSTING DEHUMANIZING PIECE OF SHIT SO STFU." And this is coming from someone who is normally pretty sensitive about sexism in language, and will shout "OR SHE" when people use male pronouns in a gender-unspecific context and gets mad when people call me "bro" and stuff.

Re: "Female"

(Anonymous) 2013-07-27 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
I think I've heard a few people complain about this but I don't get it at all. I don't get how it's "dehumanizing." And not getting what mental gymnastics it takes to get offended does not make me sexist or a man thank you very fucking much.

Eh, it's only disproportionate use that bothers me. If someone is using "males and females", sure, whatever, but it is shockingly common to see "men and females", and vanishingly rare to see "women and males". And - this is just my experience of course - when someone calls men "men" but women "females" they're almost always asstardedly sexist as fuck.

Really, anyone calling men "men" (as opposed to the equivalent of whatever they're calling women: girls/boys, ladies/gentlemen, males/females, chicks/dudes) is generally a sexist dickhole, in my my experience:

"Men" and "ladies" has a similar, but more patronizingly old-timey as opposed to neo-misogynist with a fedora on Reddit inference.

"Men" and "girls" is less patronizing or neckbeardy, more chest-thumpingly brotastic. Ditto "men" and "chicks".
