I was watching Digimon 01 (01 and 02 are streaming on Netflix in the US) and I thought that my love of it was just nostalgia and it would turn out to be really awful. But, it actually wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be.

You guys ever expect a childhood thing to actually be awful when viewed as an adult, but it wasn't?

I've never found a way to say this to the people in question, because I don't want to inadvertently stir up drama again or, at the very least, pick at old wounds - even though this is actually a GOOD thing. Several years ago at a messageboard I went to, things went OTT wanky - to the point where someone actually accused someone else of making threats (I never worked out what the hell that was, so don't ask me to explain it), and things were just getting cliquish. Well, this sort of thing has happened at other messageboards I belonged to, but in those cases, they just... shut down, because everyone gave up and left. Here we all really looked at what went wrong and worked to fix it.

I just really admire the messageboard for that. We're a small fandom (the website pretty much is our fandom), but that alone makes me glad to be part of it. Unfortunately I'm more an observer now, but I'll never forget how we've stayed afloat as opposed to sinking in shitty drama. And I wish I could say that, but I don't know how to without bringing up the past.

Several months ago, I made a picture post about an art fair that took place in my university and among the comments I received, I made a promise to an anon about making another one about the fasting month of Ramadhan; or to be more precise, the types of food we usually serve at this time.

I went to the local Ramadhan bazaar a few days back and I took some interesting pictures that could be quite enlightening to some of us here, especially to those who like exotic food. Want me to make a post about it tomorrow?

I wanted to reply but then you wouldn't see it, so here goes my answer:

I remember your post about it, and you said something about perhaps justifying it as a shopping day out of town.

My assessment: GO SEE PACIFIC RIM. It totally justifies the drive. It's not the perfect piece of perfection so many people are flailing about on Tumblr, but it's been a really long time since anything caught my attention so fiercely and unexpectedly. It may be just my personal experience about this, but I can tell you that I went with a "meh, I'll lose Glados' voice over the dubbing but I get to see pretty SFX, a woman finally kicking ass while still fully clothed and Idris Elba" attitude... and came out a wide-eyed child again.

It's such a lovingly crafted world that engulfs you with the tiniest, most beautiful little asides and details. It *makes sense*, there's actual sense to find in a robot-punching-things blockbuster. The characters rely a bit on stereotypes, and some leave you with this aching at their wasted potential, but that's what you get when there's so much to cram in two hours. The message can sometimes be a little too spelled-out, but it's a deeply resounding one (and hell, what's an action movie without a few one-liners?). You get to share their desperation, how dwarfed mankind is against the threat, you truly feel the main characters are endangered and you get to forget about their plot armor. And throughout the entire flick, you see how sticking together is what actually gives humanity a chance.

It's entertaining, it's astonishing, it's gorgeous, it's the action movie I never realised I wanted to see. I have a lot more to say about this, but I'm guessing I'll have to venture into the fandom and vomit my fascination about this in other ways rather than giving you a long ranting review you didn't even ask for. But for now, by the power that I was granted by the Internet, allow me to be your enabler and say:

I got the ambulatory EEG taken off today, and at the moment my relief over having it over with is currently outweighing my worry that, since I didn't have a single dizzy spell while wearing it (OF COURSE.), they won't find what the problem is and I'll have to go through even more expensive and uncomfortable testing. For now, though, I'm just happy to not have wires attached to my head anymore.

Anyway, I want to thank everyone who gave me time-killing recs the other day. They really helped me get through the past few days of discomfort. ♥

F!S is better than therapy

So- my brother might go to jail for drug dealing. We don't know for sure yet, my mom just found a letter from the police in his flat while dropping off some food at his flat. He doesn't know that we know, and he'd better not find out because talking to him about shit like that is not a good idea. I don't know how to feel about this. I think it's actually a good thing because that way, he might finally get it into his head that he's ruining his life. I'm not even sad, I'm just so fucking angry because my parents take it really hard. My mother is just so incredibly sad and blames herself, my father always tried to delude himself that things are not as bad as they are but now he can't pretend anymore. I feel like crap between worrying about my parents and not really caring anymore what's going on with my brother.
At the same time I'm struggling to write my Bachelor thesis which I have not been able to for two years because of depression (which probably has a lot to do with my family situation - I'm actually in a much better place than most people, but it still took a toll on me). This really sucks. I can't talk to anyone about this because my mom asked me not to and anyway, it's not like he's under arrest yet so I there's nothing much to tell. But I just needed to get this off my chest.

I have another hair issue here.

I usually get waxed everywhere (I hate hair, HATE), but I leave a little triangle on the pubic area (otherwise I feel like I'm trying to attract latent pedophiles, lol...jk). I wonder, how do you trim the remaining hair so that it looks prettier and evenly short? I use scissors, but sure as hell it isn't practical.

Should I buy a hair clipper? What do people use?

I'm gay, and living in a country where I can be jailed for it.

Ender's Game was one of my favourite childhood books. I loved and related to its message about being compassionate to people/aliens you don't understand because they're different, instead of hating and demonising them. I've been looking forward to watching the movie in the cinema since the time I first read it.

I know about Orson Scott Card's homophobia. It hurts, to put it mildly, but I scroll past and avoid reading where possible, because I don't want the memories tainted. But it's becoming harder to avoid, and I'm getting frustrated at well-meaning (especially straight) people telling me to boycott this movie and judging me for not wanting to do so. I don't have many good things in my life. This movie was supposed to be one of them, and it's becoming harder and harder to think of it with the same delight as when I first heard it was being made.

Just le me enjoy this, okay? I promise I'll make up for it. I doubled the cost of a ticket and donated it to an LGBT health organization*. I'll do more, just give me this one movie.

*not to brag, just to show I'm serious. I'm far from being rich (lol legalised job discrimination), but guilt triumphs monetary concerns.
