(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)I watched it with a couple of friends and after the movie we spend almost two hours discussing and making fun of all the plotholes and cheesy/ridiculous dialogue. It was the most fun movie night we had in ages and I completely love the movie for that, but I really don't get the way the internet gushes about Pacific Rim. You'd think it was the greatest movie to ever grace the big screen from the way people go on and on about it, instead of littered with plotholes big enough for the Coca Cola truck to do U-turns in.
That said, the girl that played the young Mako was terrific. I really hope that she can be nominated for some kind of award for her performance, because damn.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)Besides how do you even make an un-cheesy movie about GIANT ROBOTS that punch monsters in the face.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)I'm not saying it's a bad thing; as I said, I loved the movie. The cheesiness is part of its charm for me.
I don't know about making un-cheesy movies about giant robots punching monsters in the face, but in this particular case it seems like someone realized that the movie needed scenes that didn't involve giant robots, monsters, or giant robots fighting monsters, and then decided to just douse it in cheesiness to cover the mess that was the rest of the movie.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)I'm curious what plot holes aren't plot holes. We watched the dubbed version of the movie so I'm more than open to the possibility that the dub screwed the story up (kinda hoping that's the case, actually. Especially with regards to the dialouge).

1.) why did they build giant robots to fight? that makes no sense!
2.) why did Raleigh fight people to find his drift partner? how does fighting against some you are supposed to be fighting together with make sense?
Answers:
1.) Because that's the plot of the movie? Because when they tried to destroy the first kaiju with traditional means it took three days and rendered part of California uninhabitable (due to the amount of nuclear missiles they used), so they came up with something that could be used at a closer range.
2.) Because they were trying to see who he was mentally comparable with by seeing how often Raleigh and his opponent could anticipate each others moves.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)I don't see how you can say this and also say the movie is bad. It accomplished exactly what it was intending to do and you obviously enjoyed it, so in what sense was it bad? Are lack of plotholes necessary for something to be quality? If something is incredibly fun, doesn't that mean it was good, especially when that was, you know, the whole fucking point of the movie and what the creators were trying to do?
TO put it another way: you can talk about your plotholes, but Pacific Rim is just going to get a giant robot to stab them with a giant sword.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)But also, I would say that this case might make an exception to that general rule. I mean, what kind of giant robot movie isn't completely ridiculous? A bad one, that's what kind of giant robot movie.

Every single movie's gonna have a plothole or five.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)I don't see how you can say this and also say the movie is bad.
The story was bad. The dialogue was bad. The characters weren't exactly shining paragons of originality or, with few exceptions, well rounded. Objectively I'd say the movie is bad because of all these things and not at all deserving of all the hype.
But just because something is bad doesn't mean it can't be enjoyed. It's why some people enjoy reading bad fic, or why I love Stonehenge Apocalypse (have you seen that movie? Now, that's a movie that's really really bad, but awesome because it's so bad).
(It's funny you should mention the sword though; it's one of our favorite parts to mock.)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)Yes, this is precisely what I disagree with.
Using the sword as an example: from any logical perspective it doesn't make sense that they use it the way they do. But it's so cool, and the moment when it's first used is such an awesome, visceral kick, that I don't understand how you can use that as a serious objection. And it would not have been so awesome if they had set it up more. It is far less logical, but it is far more effective, and that is much more important.
And the rest of it, yes, the story was simplistic, the characters were deeply and profoundly unoriginal, but again, it was all incredibly effective, so I don't see how its bad. Those characteristics are usually the characteristics of bad movies, but they're not actually identical with being a bad movie. And in this case, they're not, because it is working on a different level. And because it is all done with so much joy and energy. And that's why it is deserving of the hype.

Bear in mind me and fingal will be circling the thread like sharks ready to charge if you respond.
Re: Always interested to hear this
(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)Not the anon you're replying to, and I don't really follow the fandom so I don't know if this has been explored or not, but the only "plot hole" (it's an inconsistency more than a plot hole, but people use the term as a catch-all) that actually bothered me was that since Mako already knew about Stacker's illness, then Raleigh should have too because he drifted with her, but it came as a huge surprise to him.
Then again, I'm dying to know how Stacker "brings nothing to the drift", so maybe that's part of it? Maybe Mako, too, was able to restrict parts of herself and her memories in the drift. I DON'T REALLY KNOW. But that's really the only thing that got to me.
Re: Always interested to hear this
Re: Always interested to hear this
But that's counterproductive, since strong memories can in fact mess with your perceptions. So you keep clear. Focused on what's in front of you (usually this means punching monsters).
Memories are shared, but it's more like a watching a friends browser surfing rather then going through his bookmarks and history, dig?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-07 12:25 am (UTC)(link)I'm gushing cause it was fun to watch. I don't care about the plot or characters, I was there for loud noises, CGI and robots beating on aliens in glorious surround sound and giant screens.
My expectations were met and exceeded.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-07 01:17 am (UTC)(link)So do I, really bad actually. I even have a freebie ticket so I'm seriously considering going by myself. Which is an exception for me as I hate watching things I've already seen. But this could be a nice, fun exception.
Like seriously the movie is like a silly definition of just plain fun for me. I'm not even a giant robot fan.
