She isn't even good at being badass. It's like Derek Hale. Continually flopping.

***SPOILERS FOR A FEAST FOR CROWS***

I wonder how the show will handle her being a flop ruler and how she effectively fucks things up faster than even Littlefinger could predict.

...Derek was badass. Like once.

Okay, yea, the show refuses to let him win fights or be the least bit happy for more than five minutes; I feel bad for the guy.

I agree that she isn't a feminist. I'm not sure about her misogyny because I don't think she hates and despises women, I think she hates and despise everybody except for her kids, Tywin and Jaime. She's an awful human being -and an fascinating character-.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Well doesn't she go on about she hates being a woman, that they're inherently weak, etc?

I dunno her Stans at all, so I'll take your word. I agree, no feminist she. But her story is a good example of how being the brunt of constant sexism can warp somebody. Cersei's a terrible person, but you can see how much of that has been shaped by the constant misogyny and violence she's faced her whole life.
helenadax: (juego de tronos)

[personal profile] helenadax 2013-08-18 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
But she hasn't faced more misogyny and violence than most women in Westeros. We've seen examples of women who follow their own rules: Arya, Brienne, lady Mormont, Asha, Mya Stone... And they aren't awful people.

Plus, I think Cersei has always been awful. She's always hated Tyrion and she was very cruel with one of her maids when she was just a kid. I think the key to her unhappiness is mostly her wonderful dad. But of course, unlike her brothers, she can't accept that.

Be careful, you gave an well-rounded opinion, you'll have a million people telling you how she's worse than everyone else in a few minutes.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
This is my feeling. She's not a feminist, but she is an example of why women need feminism.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree.

I think I've said this before, but I feel like the strange thing is that everything that stans say that Cersei is, Catelyn Stark actually is. It's weird.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
...omg, you're right.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it depends on your definition of a feminist character, for me a feminist character does not have to be a good guy, they just have to be a "complete" character. Complete means that they have their own thoughts, motivations, their own struggles... basically they have agency and they are equal to any of their male counterparts.

I think by this definition Cersei passes. That does not mean she's a good person nor should her actions be excused, it just means she's a good CHARACTER.

Equality is not about having perfect female characters who never do bad things or go through bad things, equality is about letting female characters be just as diverse and interesting as their male counterparts.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with that, but I think they meant "feminist character" as in "feminist role-model".

This is probably the best reasoning I've heard regarding her as a character. I must give this serious thought. And possibly re-read the books.

Cersei's not a feminist.

But I do think that her character is a good example of how the patriarchy warps people because a lot of her issues stem from frustration due to her limitations as a woman.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I read the book thinking she was a deconstruction of the sexual-mommy 'strong female character' that happens in a lot of fantasy books. The ones that bat their eyelashes and wipe the hero's nose and always come out on top because men are so predictable and silly it's only right to let them run out and have all the adventures while the ladyfolk sit back and giggle about how they really run everything from the shadows with their ladyparts.

Same as Ned is a deconstruction of the Noble Hero.

[Picture is Cersei Lannister as portrayed by the actress Lena Headey from the TV show "Game Of Thrones". She is a woman with light skin and very long dark blonde hair, a little wavy at the ends. She is wearing an expensive but simple red dress or blouse and a silver pendant. She is looking seriously at something in the distance.]

I think people who consider Cersei to be a feminist character are completely missing the point of her character. Her views towards women are textbook examples of internalized misogyny. She may be a "strong, independent woman" but she's also a horrible person and not someone who people should rally around.

I think you can like a character without wanting to hang out with them in person if they were real. I think the internalized misogyny is one of the more interesting things about her and I appreciate that there are a variety of female characters that all have different effects and reactions to the crapsack patriarchy they live in.

I don't know if I've seen someone thinking she's going to start a suffragette movement in Westeros or anything? I can only assume that if someone said she was feminist they'd be referring to allowing her be as vicious and play the game as the male characters do (with different results, because as said above: crapsack patriarchy).

I... think you're ascribing a character a point that really doesn't exist.
nyxelestia: Rose Icon (Default)

...people still think she's a feminist character?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-08-19 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the fact that she's a product of misogyny and very much a sexist, herself, was half the point of her character, and that people who thought she was a feminist were just flukes.

I mean, I can see how her character contributes to feminism (in a, "THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN TOO MUCH PATRIARCHY" kind of way, as well as an example of internalized misogyny), but she herself isn't a feminist, nor can I really say that her character is feministic just because she is a 'good' (in terms of writing/literary quality, not moralistic judgements) female character.
