15. Nothing much to say except Jigoku Shoujo = ♥.

35. .... o_O

Jigoku Shoujo is totally awesome. ♥

15. You better not be putting in my name. XD I probably would be too afraid to put people's names in something like that. But if it helps you with your life in any form or fashion. <3 Go right ahead.
20. I kind of was thinking of doing the same thing...
35. May I suggest picking up another series? Either of the Higurashi would be bad ideas. Try the Suzumiya Haruhi series or Pita-Ten? Or get your mom into a fandom with you?

But... Verona is a fucking FLYING CITY! And both Romeo and Juliet are deeply different from their counterparts. Romeo x Juliet =/= faithful adaptation.
They're different stories. One of them is a XXI Century anime and the other is a XVII play. They're way too different to be comparing them.
And I like the series more because I can't stand originalflavor!Romeo and originalflavor!Juliet. There. I said it.

Re: 11

[identity profile] dyxlisa.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, totally agreed. RxJ isn't my favorite anime ever, but Romeo and Juliet don't make me want to slap my head and roll my eyes anymore.

Potemayo is one of the cutest and funniest shows I've ever seen. ♥ I only watched it at first because I couldn't get over how weird-looking it was, but I didn't expect it to be good. It's one of those things that instantly puts me in a happy mood.

My mom loves it, too, and she's never cared much for other anime I've showed her.

Re: 5

(Anonymous) 2007-10-09 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It warmed me down my feet, every new episode. I bawled my eyes out on episode 12. WHY IS IT SO OVER? ;_;

Somebody needs to translate more of the manga.

13. I disagree about lesbians being boring, but YAY LANA/MIA. I wish there was more fanstuff with those two. (Not knocking Diego/Mia, by the way)

38. All my familiarity with these two comes from Tokyo Babylon, but yeah. I just think Seishirou's a nasty psychotic bastard, and I don't see what's so OMG TWU WUB about the pairing at all. Poor Subaru. But at least I know for a fact there's fans of these two who acknowledge that their relationship is fucked over sideways.

35

[identity profile] fairness.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're serious about this... I'm just another person adding to the GET HELP suggestion.

If you're old enough to move out, or have a friend willing to take you in, I would suggest doing that, too. My mom and I had a horrible, abusive relationship (physically AND mentally AND emotionally) until I moved out (at 17) and now she's one of my best friends. :)

o/ methinks I agree

[identity profile] able.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I second this :( I really hope an anime isn't the only thing to stop you from doing that. For both you and your mom and for everyone that loves you, please go get help.

1. Feeling exactly the same way - I've been in a couple of Multifandom RPGs and got into some wonderful fandoms because of them, but the characters in the game weren't quite the same after I saw the source material... although I'd rather blame the muns for OOC portrayal than the series for ruining it.

2. Just because the fandoms are small doesn't mean the people in it are elitist biatches or too closely-knit to admit anyone new. *sends hugs* Closely-knit, yes. But as a newbie to a particularly small fandom I haven't experienced any ostracizing... fandom is legion. And those who aren't will be tremendously glad to have another person swell their ranks. :D

*is #1*

(Anonymous) 2007-10-09 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand, but after seeing them played a certain way, you become used to that. So sometimes to see them in canon, even though THAT'S the very definition of IC, you can't help but think it's OOC.

On the other hand, there have been times I've watched a series and been floored by how IC the player is. :)

[personal profile] lanerose 2007-10-09 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
11. Haha! I'd read the play first, and ordinarily I'm a complete Shakespeare purist. Come to think of it, I'm a canon whore in general - which was why, having read the book, I thought the Les Miserable anime was horrible. RxJ, though, plays out like a fanfic. No, wait - crossover!fanfic, between the original story and Robin Hood, or something. The reason I still respect it is because - although it bears very very little resemblance to the play - the story being told is quite good. Sure, it's not Shakespeare - but it's still pretty good.

32. I love Hamlet like woah. This makes me very sad. ;_;

11

[identity profile] cftf.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
There was a Les Miserables anime?

....I love the musical and the book, but I think an anime would break my brain.

16. I can see that... I like the way you think.

27. Rule Four (it is Rule Four, right?) or no, that shit is still disturbing. I have to watch stuff like Hello Kitty and Pokemon to scrub my brain.

34. Don't feel bad! I'm a native English speaker and I can barely understand all of the fandom vocabulary!

38. Tough, but true. My general consensus regarding CLAMP these days is that their works are overhyped. As an example of talented doujin artists making it big though, I still hold them in high regard.

[identity profile] floralcloud.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
38. I really respect them too, but it seems like most of their works are now catered to the majority of what people like, not what they want to do. CLAMP had always been humorous, but not like XXXholic or Tsubasa...

11. READ IT. XD I love both the original novel and Gankutsuou - they're really different, and yet somehow Gankutsuou manages to capture the depth and awesomeness of the book in a way none of the other adaptations ever have. I adore them both, I don't think the book would lower your opinion of the anime.

I quite liked R x J at first (and this is having read the play previously) - it was nice. But then it started boring me around ep 14, and haven't watched it since :(

13. So most lesbians' relationships aren't deep and full of meaning? Wow.

38. Ha. Ha. Of COURSE S/S is fucked up; that's commonly acknowledged. I don't think I've ever heard anyone claim it's a sweet and healthy relationship. It's still love, though, albeit of a very twisted kind.

11

[identity profile] anison.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Gankutsuo is about a bazillion times better than The Count of Monte Cristo. Better like you wouldn't believe.

Dumas' Count is a weepy emo-pants, none of the non-Count characters are the slightest bit interesting (Albert is somehow even lamer, Eugenie and Franz don't even rank as plot devices, and Haydee comes off as some kind of slave-fantasy pedo-bait), and the ending is LOL DEUS EX MACHINA to the extreme. There's even a little bit of lamely-executed Romeo and Juliet style "LOL LET'S GET THE GIRL OUT FROM UNDER THE OPPRESSIVE THUMB OF HER FAMILY BY FAKING HER DEATH! OH NOES NOW HER LOVER THINKS SHE'S DEAD AND IS GOING TO KILL HIMSELF! IT BE DRAMATIC RESCUE TIEM NAOW?" *froth froth*

I guess you could say that the anime ruined the book for me. Not that there was much to ruin. *commence wank from French lit majors*

[identity profile] floralcloud.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Dear God, you don't deserve to be reading that shit anyway. They talk on and on for HOURS about nothing!! It's so fucking TL;DR.

[identity profile] seasalts.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
13. Okay, so I'm sure if I told you that I didn't think any heterosexuals had deep and meaningful relationships you'd freak out and say that I was stereotyping. Same goes for you. You can't just stick relationships in a box like that, or you come out looking like a hypocritical d-bag.

36. Subaru/Kamui was one of my first OTPs, and I still love them even though it's arguably one-sided. Seishirou/Subaru never appealed to me as much since it was a really abusive relationship, but I can see why people like it.

13, not the OP

(Anonymous) 2007-10-09 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
i have actually seen lots and lots of people say that heterosexual ships are boring and they get a lot less flack for it, sadly :/

[identity profile] slatterly.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
6. I NOTICE ANIMATION. :D All the damn time. It's really cool because you can sort of tell different storyboardists and how rushed they were on the one episode by how precisely everything's put together and stuff. I dunno if that's exactly what you meant but I sympathize anyway.

7. Haha, this is funny to me because I just got a bunch of volumes in Japanese and I'm trying to translate it for practice, and it's extraordinarily difficult because every other panel is just WALL O'KANJI as Light explains his next NEFARIOUS SCHEME, to the point where I kind of want to smack him now. It is just a little bit talky, yes.

11. Reading Romeo and Juliet made you lose respect for something other than the play itself? :O

14. You are full of wisdom and I offer you a high-five.
