Someone's never heard of skinny privilege?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think anybody should be bodyshamed, but I can't tell from this secret whether OP thinks 5'4" & 150 is skinny or fat?

I don't like it when people go out of their way to insult skinny women but I have to admit Baby Got Back makes me feel good about my body.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't want to sound rude, but the video of Baby Got Back only showcases conventionally beautiful, fit ladies with hard bodies - the only exception being their round behinds. It says so in the lyrics as well: "itty-bitty waist but a round thing in your face".

If you look anything like that I totally envy you. Just saying.

I know what you mean. "Everyone is beautiful" feels as trite as "everyone is special" to me. Things like Baby Got Back feels like genuine attraction and desire for as opposed to appreciating things because we need to make people feel better. Like OP said I don't need straight women who will never date or feel attracted to me to insist that I am beautiful. It doesn't mean anything.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
i think fat ladies are sexy as hell and i'm really glad that this stuff makes you feel good! you should feel good! but on the flipside, "only dogs like bones"? thin is held on a pedestal, yes, and that sucks -- but then going out of one's way to make thin women sound like shit isn't really doing a favor to fat women, it feels more like playing into the same culture by which women are constantly criticized for every single little thing about their bodies. yknow?

100% agreed anon, well said. "You're disgusting" is an awful thing to say to someone no matter what their body type. People need to be more accepting of other people in general.

before we get into fat vs skinny

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
why is it always always fat vs skinny? I don't think OP at 5'4" and 150 is fat but they are overweight and the fact that there are plenty of people who are just "overweight" and still do not get "skinny privilege" gets ignored. plenty of women are mocked and belittled for being overweight that arent "fat"

in before people insisting op is skinny because thats the only category that isnt fat

Re: before we get into fat vs skinny

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, if you look at the BMI, 5'4 & 148 is considered 'healthy weight'; 149 is overweight, so saying that 150 is overweight is kind of a technicality.

But I'm not sure whether OP is proud of her 'healthy' body or still thinks she should be skinnier.

Whether or not she'd be considered to have love handles or a big butt or w/e really isn't something that you could guess from just knowing height and a number on a scale.

I feel you, OP. It's nice to hear someone talk about people who look like me as desirable, sexual beings. Yes, I have all sorts of lovely traits that are unrelated to my appearance, and my value as a person doesn't depend on other people desiring me, but sometimes it's just good to hear that someone thinks you're hot, for a change.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you have something that makes you feel happy, but to me it's just the other side of the same coin. Some guys hate on women for being fat and others hate on them for being "anorexic".

You can complain about "thin privilege" all you want, I'm what people would call fat myself and I'm proud of who I am. But I think hating on thin women is just as disgusting. So many girls get shamed for looking "anorexic" or "like skeletons" and it all comes down to: "If I can't fap to you, I don't need to treat you with respect".

One of my best friends is really thin, she can't help it. She can't just change her metabolism because some people demand her to have more ass or bigger tits or "love handles". She gets hated on frequently, people concern-troll her like crazy. She constantly jokes about how she would love to have my curves and sometimes there's so much bitterness in her words.

Tl;Dr: I will never be able to pick sides on this subject. I think all body shaming is hate, even if you disguise it as a compliment for fat ladies.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah it's all part of the same problem--shaming people for their bodies. Treating them like their bodies are only worth what others value them to be.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeeeeeeeep. Plus, I do think "thin privilege" is a real thing -- it is really fucking easy to observe that I am generally treated kinder than my significantly fatter friends and generally ignored more than my significantly thinner friends -- but I don't think shaming thin women in turn is the way to go about dismantling that bullshit. You have to drag down the institution, not the individuals.

Moving the goalposts doesn't change that the goalposts exist in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
This seems as good a place as any to air a really big pet peeve of mine: the vast majority of people that draw “fat” girl characters as an exercise in body acceptance still overwhelmingly tend to draw them with very hourglass-y figures, which would be okay (because some fat girls are in fact hourglass-y) except for the fact that they are also overwhelmingly drawn with thin necks and ridiculously (literally impossibly) tiny ankles/feet and wrists/hands to still give the sense of delicacy. Not to mention that they’re rarely shown with any sort of folds or rolls.

Like, draw fat girls, please, but don’t shy away from it. If you’re gonna draw fat girls, draw fat girls.

Why isn't it about health instead of size?

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2013-09-13 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. You can be healthy and a size two. You can also be healthy and be a size twelve. Fat shaming and telling someone to stop eating two whole chickens at dinner are different things. I can lecture my friend because she smoking herself into an early grave but not her boyfriend for eating himself to the same destination?

Secret 2 - Fat-positivity movement in fandom, web games chat

Text from the secret maker:

For all the fat-positivity in fandom, and all the empty declarations by straight women that ~~~~every size is beautiful~~~~ it's the cis[gendered] het[erosexual] (maturer) dudebros in web games I play that make me feel the best about my (5'4" 150 lb) figure.

(A waterfall can be ~beautiful~. Nobody says sexy at any size.)

Hell yeah

I have no real substantial comment on this secret really except that I pretty much share all the sentiments in OP's image

Eh, some dudes like fat on women, others really, really don't. Some women find chubby guys cuddly and adorable, others find them repulsive. While the media likes to admit the latter, it seems incapable of admitting the former (all men hate fat chicks!!! golden ratio!!! it's science *cites widely discredited "paper" by Satoshi Kanzawa*). But diverse tastes and diverse interests will always be there.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
The comments you used as examples are kinda rude IMO... Women aren't supposed to have anything. They're all implying and sometimes flat out affirming women need to have certain physical qualities to be real women. How is that positive?

At the end of it all, if you are considered good looking (by whatever standards) you will be thought of as a better person than if you are ugly. Ugly deviates too far from the norm, deviations inspire fear and disgust because of an ingrained response to that which iss "other." Ugly invokes disease and malady, thus it is to be shunned.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
I hate bitches that say a fat chick should eat a salad. I hate bitches that say skinny chicks should eat a sandwich.

Can we just all agree that any kind of bodyshaming is fucked up and you should probably just shoot yourself to save the rest of us don't have to hear that kind of negative shit? I hate hearing it. God knows I've lost like 30 pounds so far, primarily because what I'm currently doing has fitness requirements and I was definitely in the red so it was simply easier on me and my life if I just sucked it up and ate Chipotle less frequently (that being said fuck health foods, I gag on that shit), but it makes me rather uncomfortable to hear anyone congratulate me--especially my mother because all that woman does is go on about how I finally look halfway decent. :\ My family, except for my father, is markedly fat-phobic...and in my mother's case it's gone straight into condescension behind closed doors. My brother has said that he's uncomfortable around fat people because they're so unattractive to him. Which I tell them is fucked up...and they just go on happily not giving a fuck. Look, the important thing is that you must be happy with the person that you are, and accept whatever consequences come of however that happens to be. Do what you've got to do, OP.

Pretty much my number one pet peeve with the fat acceptance movement

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-09-14 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
On one hand, I agree that body-shaming sucks and all that jazz. On the other hand, so much of the fat acceptance movement seems to hinge on trite sayings about all body types (or appearances in general), with out any depth or consideration to it.

Like, I'm glad you think I'm beautiful, but you have no idea what I look like, how can I take you seriously on that?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
How come we never talk about men with big butts tho? They exist, women don't fat shame them, but are men fat conscious about their fat butts? Probably not.
