Haters gonna hate, anon. If the mere existence of a crossover like that is enough to get their panties in a bunch, that's their problem, not yours. Like what you like and don't worry about them.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-22 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't read a really good crossover with anything crossing over the extended Who universe, Supernatural and/or Sherlock ever. Especially anything Torchwood and Sherlock, since there's not an effort to explain how Sherlock's John and Sherlock are working with mid-00s Torchwood.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-22 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
it's a stupid concept but I'm just some asshole on the internet so why should you care what I think? if you like something, then like it. there are a lot of people into it, so why does it matter if other people aren't? anything that's popular is going to have fans and dissenters.

The design of this secret is very nice!

I don't think every SuperWhoLock is inherently any worse than any other crossover. Saying this is like saying that every poem in prose is inherently worse than any traditional poem. They're just genres/universes, they tell the reader nothing about the contents or the technique.
So, yeah, I find it a tad stupid when people say that they hate all the SuperWhoLock - unless it is because they hate one of the shows involved.

This being said, I do find both SPN and Doctor Who boring, creepy and at times generally low-quality, so I'm one of those folks who won't read SuperWhoLock works due to their aversion for the shows involved.

Also, it (understandably) annoys the hell out of people when there's some other minor universe involved in a huge crossover and then the fandom of the minor canon is spammed with bloody crossovers they don't really want to see, much less read.

(And, tbh, it's funny how you draw the line at the inclusion of Avengers and HP)

I think it's because people get burnt out and tired of hearing about popular fandoms. I think pretty much everyone on Tumblr is probably marginally interested in one of those fandoms. Marginally is the key word, I think, and those on the fringe get tired of talking about SuperWhoLock (Potter). Personally, I don't really get it get it because I thought people liked stupid crossovers and talking about their fandoms, so why all the whining that people like what you like?

People on tumblr have problem learning to fucking SCROLL ON BY, though.

There would be nothing wrong with it if fans just kept it to crossover sections, but it is so fucking pervasive. You can't move in the gen sections of the fandoms without it popping up.

Personally I hate it because I have no interest in any of those three fandoms and I'm sick of Superwholock showing up when I look at the tags from fandoms I do like (this applies to both tumblr and AO3).

(Anonymous) 2013-09-22 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like Supernatural and I wish people would quit trying to force it on me based on my other likes, but man, like what you like. Fuck the haters. I enjoy crossovers myself, especially Doctor Who ones, but I get that it's not for everyone.

It isn't as bad as the Bronies and their Doctor Whooves crap that they smear everywhere.

Still pretty annoying though. I hate it when people tag SuperWhoLock on non-crossover stuff. Just because something features one of the fandoms does not mean that it needs the fandom portmanteau tag. Just another example of tag abuse which is eroding fandom faster than a hooker's knee cartilage.

Some people don't like crossovers. Some people aren't in all the fandoms. Some people aren't in any of the fandoms and it's still all over their dash. Some people just don't like it because they just don't like it.

As for me? I don't really care either way.

But seriously, if you like something just enjoy liking it. What other people think doesn't matter as long as you're not hurting anyone. So... stop paying attention to them. Let them dislike it. Let yourself like it unabashedly.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-22 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
My personal opinion? There is nothing inherently wrong with the Supernatural/Doctor Who/Sherlock crossover combination. However, a lot of the people calling it Superwholock are not putting in the effort to do a three-way crossover well. They're just throwing a lot of stuff they like in a basket and laughing maniacally.

Considering some of the things I wrote fifteen years ago, I'm not really in a position to criticize other people's choice to throw a lot of stuff they like in a basket and laugh maniacally. Enjoy. But it's their cocktail of awesome, not mine, so it's not to my taste.

Another factor for me is that I'm not very fond of Sherlock, and it's outside the sci-fi/horror genre, so it annoys me.

Yet another factor for me is my violent aversion to portmanteau fandom descriptors.

Mainly because most the crossover writers are crappy and the plots are dumb.

P.S. Fucking Sherlock crossovers and alpha/omega stans stay out of the James Bond fandom!

Because why the fuck?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-22 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Look, I like crossovers as much as anyone. I've read some really good crossovers and fusions before, and a lot of them contained popular fandoms. The problem I have with Superwholock in particular is that I have never seen any attempt ever to explain why those three shows cross, or any situation where it's even plausible.

Supernatural is fantasy, and used to be monster-of-the-week. Doctor Who could combine with that reasonably, having its own supernatural elements, but why would the consulting detectives even be there? What situation would require hunters, consultants, and someone who can bend time and space? You'd think a combination of any two would be enough, but all three? Why the fuck would they even be working together? Why would they even be on the same continent?

Basically, it all boils down to the fact that combining more than two fandoms is really hard to do, much less do well. If you choose your fandoms wisely, it can be done, but those three in particular are pretty much just "most popular fandoms right now."

You like it, other people don't. That is fineeeeeeeeeeeeee.

I'm not fond of it (despite having been in each of the fandoms at some point) but I don't get bent out of shape about their existence. So don't worry about everyone else and just enjoy.

it's because it's popular

Secret 9 - Supernatural, Doctor Who, Sherlock

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-22 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is three icons: The first one shows the Impala? automobile from the TV show Supernatural, with the word "SUPER", the second one the Tardis/phone booth from the TV show "Doctor Who" with the word "WHO" and the last one the outline of Sherlock Holmes from the TV show "Sherlock" and the word "LOCK".]

I like Supernatural. I like Doctor Who. I like Sherlock. I adore crossovers. So I don't get why everyone looks at SuperWhoLock like it's a bad thing. Yeah, once you get into SuperWhoAvengePotterLock and the like you've gone too far, but just these three... I don't get the hate and it makes me feel guilty for liking it.

Secret because: SuperWhoLock is clearly of the devil.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-22 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just amused that you're all for SuperWhoLock, but SuperWhoPotterAvengeLock? NO, THAT IS JUST TOO FAR.

But seriously, OP, if you enjoy it, then go ahead and enjoy it. Don't shove it in people's faces, but don't feel guilty about liking a thing that isn't causing any harm to anyone. I'm gonna go on enjoying my crossovers of 10+ shows, and the haters can get fucked.

Like what you like, fuck the haters. Find those who like it, too, and hang out and have fun. There is not point otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-22 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Man I just wish a Potter/FMA:B crossover would catch on like Superwholock did.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-22 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally, SuperWhoLock annoys me because the majority of the people who are into it are obnoxious, queerbait lovers.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-22 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care if people like it or not. I like crossovers. I just get annoyed that it is so pervasive in the Supernatural and Doctor Who fandoms because I know nothing and care nothing about Sherlock. And yet the SuperWhoLock stuff is hard to avoid in the general fandom areas for those two fandoms.
littlestbirds: (Default)

[personal profile] littlestbirds 2013-09-22 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get it, I feel like the aspects of those fandoms that people find compelling, the reasons they are huge fandoms in the first place, are so dissimilar that... Why? Why would you?
But if it gives you a thrill, ignore the haters. I probably read something you hate, we all have different priorities as readers...

(Anonymous) 2013-09-22 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally? It's because I get it shoved in my face all the time. In and of itself, I wouldn't hate it. But when I can't seem to get away from it? Yeah, no. That's a bit of a tipping point for me.

I like crossovers, but I'm not in any of the fandoms that involve SuperWhoLock, so my feelings on it are just meh. But like what you like, OP!
I guess I also have the good fortune of having no SuperWhoLock stuff at all on my dash so I don't feel over-saturated with it. Guess none of the people I follow are into crossover stuff (at least, not for super popular fandoms).
