Yes, redheads have always had bad reputations, and gotten discrimination, but I've always thought the term "gingers" was fairly tame and even affectionate.

It's not discriminatory if you're just using it as a description, the same way you'd say someone's a blond or brunette or whatever. If you're using it to make generalizations about them (along the lines of "they must x, they're gingers"), that's... sketchy, to say the least.

That said, I still remember the mild outrage when the Doctor on Doctor Who was perceived as being discriminatory towards redheads... because he said he wanted to be ginger. Yeah, makes no sense to me either.

Being bullied/teased because you're ginger isn't right, but it's not racism and it's not even in the same universe as it. And I say this as a ginger. Hurt feelings =/= racism. This has nothing to do with this secret but I've seen people legit try to claim it's racism. Lol, no.

i have red hair and i personally really hate being called ginger/a ginger, generally when people say it they're in the process of insulting us. even if they aren't, i've never liked the term and get offended if people use it to refer to me after i've asked them not to.

but the term isn't racist, and hating redheads isn't racist. it's an asshole thing to do for sure but being a shitlord and being a racist are two different things.

It's ging-er, with the "ging" part pronounced like it rhymes with "bing". Redheads are sometimes referred to as "ging-er mingers" (a minger being an ugly person)

Can someone please direct me to some examples of people being discriminated against for having red hair? Clearly, I'm very oblivious and/or possibly living in an alternate reality because I've never heard of this.

I don't doubt that people with red hair face verbal abuse for it, but that's just life unfortunately, some people are dicks (news at 11). If you don't have red hair then people can still abuse you for being short, or fat, or ugly, or having bad skin... the list goes on. Why do we have to categorise it as racism before we consider it to be bed?

To pick this physical aspect that people face abuse for and call it racism is absurd! If picking on someone for being a red head is racism then why not for being short, or fat, ect? Why aren't "dumb blondes" jokes considered racist? I've never really seen the term "ginger" as being offensive, but I can understand how some might considering that some people purposefully use the word derisively.
