Sorta OT but those two actresses are the same to me, I CAN NOT tell them apart to save my life

Secret 1 - Tauriel, Arwen, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings (films)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-11 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Tauriel, as portrayed by the actress Evangeline Lilly, from the upcoming film "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug", and Arwen, as portrayed by the actress Liv Tyler, from the "The Lord of the Rings" movie trilogy. Tauriel is a female elf with light skin and long red-orange hair, posing with a dagger, and Arwen is a female elf with light skin and long, wavy black hair posing delicately in a green dress. She is wearing a metallic tiara of sorts.]

I'm excited about seeing her and I like what I've already seen. But I can't shake the feeling her character is just a rerun of the original plan for Arwen. Also known as Xenarwen. (Excluding the whole Aragorn romance.)

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
And I think that's fine? The reason that plan seemed ridiculous for the original trilogy is because it doesn't work for Arwen's character at all and would be like spitting in the face of the source material. No reason it can't be retooled for an original Elven warrioress-type character though.

I also highly doubt Tauriel's "romance" subplot will be anything approaching the level of Aragorn/Arwen.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
The more commercials I see of Tauriel, the less I want to see the rest of the Hobbit movies. Especially if there is any romance. If she's just a random kick ass Elf, I'll be happy she's there. If she's there to have any sort of romance with any of the guys, I'm going to be super pissed.

They said they needed more girls because girls shouldn't have to sit through 6 hours of movies without someone there to look up to. Fine, that's all well and good. But girls also don't need a romance shoved down their goddamned throats to enjoy a fantasy story.

I'm hoping for some awesome ass-kicking and strategy planning scenes starring Tauriel. I'm predicting that whatever romance subplot she's part of will be very background/minor stuff because she still is an OC and obviously it can't be an epic love story or anything.

I'm looking forward to Tauriel as well, she looks cool and while I've only seen her kicking Orc ass so far in any teasers I'm very much interested in seeing what her character is like too. Plus I'm just happy for another female elf 'cause I like my elf ladies.

I'm happy that she's in there.

The series is so white and male.

It's nice to at least have a woman in the mix, even if it's still a blindingly white movie.

I'm really dreading her character, but if it turns out she's just a badass making up for the sheer lack of females, I'll stan for her. I just can't stand all the romance they've added to the LOTR films, it was nonexistent in the books. It's bad enough they brought Orlando Brood back.

I'm excited about her. And I'm totally shipping her with everyone. I don't care. She seems like she's going to be awesome. Yes, I love the book, but the movies are separate entities. As long as they are true to the spirit, small changes like this don't bother me.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Blech. At least Arwen was someone real in the story and was fleshed out in a way that made sense. This is Generic Female Elf as Love Interest. Perfect for Evangeline "I hate fame and never want to act again" Lilly.

Oh man, dreading her so much. I hope there's not a lot of romance happening with her. :T

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
I love it; I don't care. As far as I'm concerned the Hobbit movies are just a fan movie with a really big budget. Party with Dwarves! Elves shoot things! A dragon in there somewhere! The filmmakers clearly aren't interested in doing a faithful adaptation of The Hobbit so I won't pretend that's what it's supposed to be.

Plus anything that gives me material for 1000 endless rants about what subtle worldbuilding element or Tolkienist ethical nuance the movies destroyed is a win for me. I love nerding it up about everything that shouldn't be there and I also love 80-90% of the things that shouldn't be there.

Mileages will vary.

I'm excited enough about the character. I just wish she was played by someone else. And while it's a small thing to complain about I'm really tired of bottle redheads, especially in non-modern settings.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of think the same thing, but I don't really think it's a problem. I'm just glad she's there, and I'm excited for whatever she brings to the movies.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm conflicted about her addition. I don't think adding a woman for the sake of adding a woman is good, and I don't think The Hobbit has to automatically be criticized just for not having women. But if there is a possibly appropriate appendix/silmarillion/whatever female character that would help make the movie more interesting? I'm not a purist, as long as the essence of the story is the same. She just seems so token and Mary Sue.

I know, it's not fair to call her a Mary Sue, but... awesome elven warrior woman in a love story who was created for PJ's fanfic retelling... skeptical. And all the commercials make her look pretty cardboard so far.

that being said, I really am hoping to love her.

I have already solicited spoilers from someone who has seen the movie.

The romance I am Do Not Want about is the thing with Kíli. I already know it is corny.

But this all goes back to the fact that I have an OTP that includes Kíli.

I'm all for lady elf warrior and largely indifferent to the romance, but I do wish they had cast someone else.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
Looking forward to Tauriel, she seems super cool from what little I've seen so far.

But yeah when I heard they planned for Arwen to fight at Helms Deep... I think it's for the better she did not it wouldn't have fit very well.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
The ONLY thing I dread about her is the romance subplot they seem to be wanting to push. First of all love triangles are ugly and cause ship wars in fandom. Second of all I don't wanna see another Will x Elizabeth or Helen x Paris.

I mean, Orlando is a great Legolas and it's good to see a LotR cast member in The Hobbit... but if they are trying to make Legolas into some brooding romantic like Will Turner or Paris... then ugh. No thanks.

I was looking forward to seeing her until I heard she was a love interest. Hopefully it'll be handled well, or at least kept mostly out of the way.
