i honestly enjoy them more too, if only because of obi-wan. obi-wan is pretty much the best, and the prequels have more of him.

Well, they're pretty bad movies, but enjoy what you like, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-12 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just curious (though I know it may seem like I'm being snarky), which did you see first? That might impact your feelings. I know they were prequels, not remakes, but they were still quite different so it's what you're "used" to.

... Okay, dang.

To be fair, I like the central IDEA behind the prequels better; showing off this vast empire and this entire order of awesome monks before it all spirals into war and chaos. And the idea of a tragic messiah figure becoming the antichrist is always good to watch.

It just, uh, failed on execution.

Are you the same person who posted the Moffat secret? Tbh, I don't think that claiming to like the second Star Wars trilogy is a good idea for quality trolling. There are quite a few f!s people who like it, and the discussions regarding the trilogies do not seem to have started any shitstorms as of late.

I do like the prequel, and Phantom Menace is actually my favourite Star Wars episode - but that's mostly because I am really fond of Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon. Plotwise, it is messy and full of silly shenanigans. And the characterizations are kinda bland. Still, my opinion is that the prequel is a high-quality production, and I always enjoy watching it.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-01-12 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
ngl, I like the worldbuilding/setting of the prequels far better than that of the Original Trilogy. I like that there's much more to the galaxy and all those kick-ass alien races, nnnnngh.

... The movies themselves just needed better writers, imho. Clone Wars (the CGI one, not the Tartakovsky shorts, tho' those kicked ass too), while not without its flaws, was a step in the right direction, especially in regards to Anakin's characterization. But in all honesty, I have seen far worse movies and imho I think they're alright.

But IMHO, Obi-Wan was the best character out of all 3 movies.

99% sure you're the same person who submitted the moffat secret (same style, same font color) so try harder next time. pro tip: it would probably work better if you gave specific reasons why you like it more.

The only thing that still stings about the prequels is the whole Anakin/Padme thing. I was not convinced by that romance at all, and I'm usually pretty easily convinced. No wonder people ship Padme/Obi-Wan instead.

It's all good, OP. I think the prequels have some good stuff in them. For one thing, I really liked Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan. On the other hand, I found it a bit jarring to have Yoda switched from puppetry to CGI.

That's okay, OP. Personally I love all of them. My two favorites are Jedi and Sith, and I like the rest about equally. I think they are all good movies, personally, and I don't care what anyone says. The Star Wars universe in general makes me happy.

they're pretty bad in terms of writing and directing...

not to mention that in "phantom menace", you have no clue who the main character has. if you get the chance, watch redlettermedia's review for more on this.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-12 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, I hate the prequels and love the original trilogy for the most part.

Except for one detail.

I remember enjoying the Phantom Menace a lot when I first saw it, haven't watched it in ages though so I don't know how it holds up to me now, but the other two... eeeeh I didn't like so much. But I'm hardly going to get up in arms because someone prefers the prequels.

I probably would have enjoyed Revenge of the Sith more if General Grievous hadn't sucked so much tbh.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-12 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I prefer the original trilogy to the prequels. However, since this is mostly because I actually don't care about Jedi/Sith and therefore sort of prefer the bit of the universe that has exactly six of them, I suspect this opinion won't make me any more popular.

I was just sort of in it more for the grim'n'gritty rebellion, smugglers and warrior princesses than for the space monks and the fall of the old republic. I like the prequels in that they give a good sense of what was lost, of what it is that the rebellion is remembering in the first place, but they definitely weren't my favourite part to actually watch.

Also, the originals have Lando. For some reason, this boosts them a lot for me.

But, you know, it's all about what you want to watch. So watch the bits that make you happy.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-12 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
My stepson was 6 or 7 when the third one came out and it was his introduction to Star Wars, so the prequels are his favorite. That just makes sense to me; Empire was my introduction and these days is the only one I have any sort of feelings for.

I don't like them BETTER, I like them DIFFERENT.

Mostly I wish Lucas has got someone else to direct, someone who can actually direct actors--its not like all the actors are terrible at acting...see Portman and Christianson having gone on to give some damn good performances. The best acting in the trilogy was from Ewan MacGregor, and that's because he had the character in the original series to base his performance off of.

I got the feeling in the prequels that Lucas was like "Ok, and then you look HERE where the mini speeeder-craft hovers overhead--" "And how do I feel about that?" "Huh? Idk man, be scared or something."
