To be fair, I like the central IDEA behind the prequels better; showing off this vast empire and this entire order of awesome monks before it all spirals into war and chaos. And the idea of a tragic messiah figure becoming the antichrist is always good to watch.
It just, uh, failed on execution.

I do like the prequel, and Phantom Menace is actually my favourite Star Wars episode - but that's mostly because I am really fond of Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon. Plotwise, it is messy and full of silly shenanigans. And the characterizations are kinda bland. Still, my opinion is that the prequel is a high-quality production, and I always enjoy watching it.

... The movies themselves just needed better writers, imho. Clone Wars (the CGI one, not the Tartakovsky shorts, tho' those kicked ass too), while not without its flaws, was a step in the right direction, especially in regards to Anakin's characterization. But in all honesty, I have seen far worse movies and imho I think they're alright.
But IMHO, Obi-Wan was the best character out of all 3 movies.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-12 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)not to mention that in "phantom menace", you have no clue who the main character has. if you get the chance, watch redlettermedia's review for more on this.

I probably would have enjoyed Revenge of the Sith more if General Grievous hadn't sucked so much tbh.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-12 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)I was just sort of in it more for the grim'n'gritty rebellion, smugglers and warrior princesses than for the space monks and the fall of the old republic. I like the prequels in that they give a good sense of what was lost, of what it is that the rebellion is remembering in the first place, but they definitely weren't my favourite part to actually watch.
Also, the originals have Lando. For some reason, this boosts them a lot for me.
But, you know, it's all about what you want to watch. So watch the bits that make you happy.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-12 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)Mostly I wish Lucas has got someone else to direct, someone who can actually direct actors--its not like all the actors are terrible at acting...see Portman and Christianson having gone on to give some damn good performances. The best acting in the trilogy was from Ewan MacGregor, and that's because he had the character in the original series to base his performance off of.
I got the feeling in the prequels that Lucas was like "Ok, and then you look HERE where the mini speeeder-craft hovers overhead--" "And how do I feel about that?" "Huh? Idk man, be scared or something."
