If you leave out zombies, what is there to write in a post-apocalyptic setting? I'm honestly baffled.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-14 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Survivors of a catastrophe. *Everyone* doesn't have to die, just most people.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-14 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Life After People finds a lot of stuff to say, and that's without any humans at all. Throw in some people trying to survive and you've got all kinfs of stuff to write about.

There are tons of things. Dystopian anarchy or oligarchy set up by surviving bullies, radiation causing all kinds of weird illnesses or mutations, space explorers returning to find a broken and empty Earth, all kinds of other ideas...

Besides which, zombie-post-apocalypse pretty much implies that the zombie virus was the cause of the apocalypse, and there are plenty of other things that can fuck shit up on a major scale.

It's one thing to not care for romance, but you almost sound kind of hostile to it. Pointless? Not to everyone.

That said, I hope you're able to find some books that suit your interests better.

It's one thing to be uninterested in romantic plotlines, but the fact that being involved in romance makes you hate a character is kind of over the top. People have emotions, and unless a person is asexual/aromantic, some of those emotions are going to be about romance. It's no more "pointless" than any other form of human interaction

Problem with your extreme view about romance in fiction? any story that explores survivors in a post-apocalyptic world is gonna deal with emotions and how these people deal with this new life. One of the strongest emotions is the need to bond with other humans and that often presents itself as romance. You may think it's unimportant and useless but the majority of people don't. That's why so much media involves romance. It's not the be all end all of existence, but it's a big part so it gets written about.

Here's a list from Goodreads about post apocalypse books: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/392.This_is_the_end_

Surely there are some there that fit your wishes you haven't read? I don't read a lot of this genre, so sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck, OP

How about Damnation Alley by Zelazny?

City by Clifford D. Simak? Note: I think humans are only in the very beginning and the very end of the novel.

I'd say Ariel, because it's pretty weird, but the love triangle is really weird in it, too (and made me literally throw the book across the room in rage).

Oryx & Crake by Margaret Atwood.

A post-apocalyptic scenario caused by genetic engineering & bioweapons. It's bleak, but it also manages to pull off humour as well.

There is an important relationship between the three main characters, but I don't know if I'd really call it a "love triangle" as such, it's very one-sided, and it's used as a plot point & a way of developing the characters.

The focus of the book is more on how the world got to where it is.

You might like James Axler's books. There are a ton of them but they're mostly stand-alones. Not really any romance that I can recall.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Axler

As for why books these days are zombie YA romance triangles? Money. It's what sells. As soon as it stops selling, they'll do (and overdo) some other genre/tropes.

MORTAL ENGINES BY PHILLIP REEVE.

It's a post-apocalyptic setting where mechanized cities move around and eat each other. It has moments of darkness, but it's also got a lot of humour and awesome characters. It feels more like an adventure story than a bleak dystopian story like The Road.

I love this kind of story. I totally agree on the 'romance' thing. SO MANY RECS IN COMMENTS!!! :)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-14 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
How about Ariel by Steven R. Boyett? It's a weird kind of apocalypse--technology stops working and magic starts working--but there are no zombies involved and no love triangles (unless you want to stretch the legal definition of such to a snapping point.)

Same; I like the genre but with the exception of Hunger Games have trouble getting into YA fiction

(Anonymous) 2014-01-14 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I don't mind zombies, but I do like a bit of variety. But especially about the series part--I'm having trouble finding ANY well-written books that aren't part of stupidly named trilogies or sagas. I want to read a story and finish that story, especially since they're generally not well-written. (This is my own fault since I browse Kindle's free selections, but still)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-14 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, people are getting really worked up about this romance thing, aren't they?

I'm with you, OP. I really dislike love triangles in my post-apocalyptic fiction. And before people get mad, I got nothing against romance in general. I just don't like it in post-apocalyptic fiction. It's called "different strokes for different folks".

(Anonymous) 2014-01-14 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish there are more post apocalyptic stories written by people who have at least lived in disorder, if not actually in wars and utter chaos. Not all of the westerner-written ones suffer from this, but the overwhelming majority are from people who never had to even think about what daily lives of a collapsed society is really like.

I honestly have the feeling the issue doesn't really lie with the books.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-14 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Completely agree about zombies. I find them so, so boring and sooooo played out right now. Everyone thinks they're super clever inserting them into everything including my beloved Shakespeare. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies? Twelfth Night of the Living Dead? BO-RING. Let that stupidity die for a generation, then let them discover like we did with vampires.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-16 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand the fascination with zombies either. As for other post-apocalyptic novels 'Day Of The Triffids' is the first that comes to my mind.
