Well, I respect that, I suppose, but I think you might have missed the whole point of that part. He feels this way because the regime has so utterly suppressed the sex instinct in the people that the only outlet it has is violence.

If it helps you at all, he never rapes her, or anyone else for that matter. No rape occurs "on-screen", between anyone, as far as I remember.

Yeah. It's a statement of how fucked-up the society is in Oceania that the goal of Ingsoc isn't just to keep people from ever committing thoughtcrime, but to subvert every normal human emotion and feeling, especially the sex drive, into being only of service to The Party, and of course Big Brother.

And so Winston, with no idea of what sane societies teach people about sex, has these fucked-up thoughts about Julia because he doesn't grasp that his attraction to her is a perfectly normal thing.

(But he gets better)

Eh, someone can understand that sort of thing but still not want to read it. I have one friend in particular who needs to be in the right mood for satire or other things that deconstruct the bad things that upset her because even though she knows they're on her side she just doesn't want to deal with the subject all the time.

Or maybe you're right. That happens a lot too.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-04 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Believing that the only outlet for suppressed sexual feelings is violence is misogynist. It's not something that Orwell made up, it's something that real men actually feel.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-04 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not something that Orwell made up, it's something that real men actually feel.

Which is what makes the passage both disturbing and very powerful.

I... don't get it? Why? Is it just that the prospect is distressing? Because... I think that's sort of the point. That passage illustrates how twisted the character's idea of sexuality had become. Or do you think Orwell is trying to condone that sort of behaviour/thought process in some way?

Whatever, though, I didn't even like 1984.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-04-04 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I certainly didn't think Orwell was condoning it.

But I really wanted out of the character's head.

wow i have never seen someone miss the point as much as you did, ever. you didn't just miss it, you took a figurative spaceship and flew a billion light years away from it.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-04 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
They didn't miss the point. They just didn't like reading a book from the perspective of a character who has all that going on in his head. It's not about "getting" or "not getting" the point of what Orwell was doing -- it's about finding the psychology of the character disturbing. Considering the fact that it's intentionally disturbing then it's perfectly reasonable for the OP to check out after a disturbing passage.

Wait...the tying her up and shooting her with arrows, or beating her to death with a rubber truncheon, those things are okay? But because he also had a rape fantasy (tied in with a massive subplot speaking to the subjugation of humanity's essential sexuality and the way that subjugation is used to diminish the human soul, which seems to have gone over your head entirely), that bit was too much? I mean, yes, it's horrible, but I don't get the fixation with rape being worse than these other abuses, especially in this particular context.

I keep trying to articulate why I find this secret tiresome...do you want people to pat you on the back because you stopped reading a literary classic at the mention of a rape fantasy?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-04 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I had the same thought when I read the secret. Murder is okay, but not when it's coupled with rape, oh no!

It's the "rape is a special kind of evil" mindset.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-04-04 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Two parts highlighted there. One, he wants to rape her (and kill her) because he hates her, which is nasty and threw me all the way out of the narrative when I tried to read the book the first time (and reading the ending gave me no incentive to go give him a second chance, poor doomed bastard). But yeah, it's not really out of sync with the other violence.

Two -- he hates her because he wants to have sex with her and never will? Her statement she won't have sex is a personal attack on him somehow? She's committed the crime of being attractive and sexually unavailable? Too many people think like that now for it to be entirely a product of the dystopia.

Not the OP, but I can relate to the secret. I don't mind reading about murder, and I do mind reading about rape. This is not because I think the latter is "worse" than the former, but because it hits closer to home.

I don't think that makes me a special snowflake or admirably hypersensitive or whatever is supposed to be tiresome here. It just means that I don't want to hang out with too much fictional rape if I can avoid it.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-04 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
jeez, OP is allowed to be put off by something from a book and choose not to continue with it, even if it's not supposed to be good or the protagonist isn't supposed to be sympathetic

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Okay sure. And since it was put out there as a secret, aren't we allowed to read a secret and choose to discuss it, and even disagree with it?

Sometimes I think secrets are like the whole concrit debacle. You put the secrets out there expecting feedback, but only if it agrees with you?

Tbh, when I had to read this in class I just...didn't. I read like the first couple of chapters then stopped [and, fun fact, got an A on the test [including more than one essay question]. I'd had to re-read Animal Farm like 4 times a couple years before and that pretty much ruined me on his fiction writing.

His autobiographical stuff is pretty awesome though.

/nothing to add

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I know the feeling, OP. I personally liked 1984, but if you didn't, or you just weren't comfortable reading it, that's okay. You should spend your time reading books you enjoy.

And the people jumping on the OP for not liking the book need to piss off. If OP didn't like it, they didn't like it. That is something they are allowed to do. It doesn't mean they missed the point, it just means that they didn't like it. For example, I put Lolita down after a few chapters and I'm never picking it up again. I know it's a classic, I know it's amazing, but I really don't care. Humbert Humbert is a sick pig and I don't want to be in his head. That's a choice people are allowed to make. Stop being such pricks. Just because someone doesn't like your favorite book doesn't mean you're not allowed to.

I almost wrote a comment like this.

You say you just didn't like a book, most people will be cool with it because hey people like different things. Say it's because you're sensitive to rape, then you need to be lectured on how it's a commentary on society and there's a difference between depicting something and condoning it, because apparently there's no way someone could understand that and still not want to read it.

Dear OP,

If you are reading this for school, there is something wonderful about writing about works you hate with a passion. I got an HD (High Distinction) on my essays about Picnic at Hanging Rock and Wuthering Heights, explaining how they were awful and why. A just 'this is crap because this' is not enough in critical thinking. WH was my lit lecturer's favourite novel and she gave me an HD for an essay about how much it sucked because I had a solid and sound argument.

If you don't have to read it for school, forget all that.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Happily no.

We did have to read Animal Farm in school. I mostly ended up pissed off at all the characters for being so extremely stupid.
