Everything you wanted to know about DID/multi, but were afraid to ask.

[personal profile] lb_lee 2015-01-26 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
This is carrying over from yesterday's thread, since folks seemed interested. So, an official 101 thread.

As mentioned a couple times in the past, I'm multiple. Dissociative Identity Disorder, multiple personalities, whatever. We make educational comics about it (and other mental health stuff) which have been used by shrinks, mental hospitals, and multiples themselves since 2008. I'll even be a speaker at the Ivory Garden Trauma and Dissociation Conference in October! (Though they misgender me on the site; I should tell them.)

A lot of people don't know very much about multiplicity, and there are a lot of myths and creepery surrounding it. So consider this thread open season to ask multi questions! The only subject that is completely off limits is my sex life; other than that, have at, and I'll let you know if it's something I don't know.

If you're shy, or feel more comfortable learning on your own, you might find our info page helpful. (Though the pages may be a bit out of date.)

When did you first notice your other personality(ies)?

I don't know how to word this, but how do you make sense of being so many? Does it scare you?

Do you know the show United States of Tara? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_of_Tara

It's about a mother with DID, and I'm wondering how accurate it is, especially with the other alters (like Bryce) emerging in later seasons.

Do you see this as a disorder, or just a state of being?

Do you actually like each other? Or are you more "forced to get along" like reluctant siblings in the same house?

Re: Everything you wanted to know about DID/multi, but were afraid to ask.

How common is it for someone to refer to their self/themselves with "we" and other plural pronouns consistently? You do it regularly here and in your work-- which I'm enjoying browsing through. I'm kind of assuming this is just a personal preference, and varies by individual (and possibly is related to how aware one is of being multi?).

Re: Everything you wanted to know about DID/multi, but were afraid to ask.

Are you all into fandom and do you share fandoms? I remember you mentioning your husband, so I guess that either Mac or Rogan have commented before, but what about the others?

Re: Everything you wanted to know about DID/multi, but were afraid to ask.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-26 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. This is very interesting for me to wrap my head around, as I'm not multiple myself. I'm a writer so I'm trying to use that to help me process it.

What are the similarities/differences between imagination or one's internal narration and having DID/multi? Also, are there any similarities/differences between spiritual or religious experiences and having DID/multi?

Re: Everything you wanted to know about DID/multi, but were afraid to ask.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-26 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I feel nervous asking so please please please don't feel you have to answer, but can I ask how your "original girl" died?

Re: Everything you wanted to know about DID/multi, but were afraid to ask.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-26 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
How does one personality integrate with another? Is it painful or difficult? How did the "original" integrate, if you don't mind me asking?

(You don't have to answer this.)

If you don't mind me asking...

How do other disorders interact with being multi/DID? Are some of you more affected than others by particular disorders?

Re: Everything you wanted to know about DID/multi, but were afraid to ask.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-26 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
One way I've read about conceptualising personalities is they're kind of like operating systems or OS's - Mac, Windows, Linux, etc. Or that they're sort of like filters through which people view the world.

So... would it be accurate to say that multi is like running multiple OS's and being able to switch between them, or having different OS's for different purposes?

Or having different filters/pairs of glasses?

Thanks for making a thread! I think we talked the other day because someone from my hometown bought comics from your etsy? I'll definitely check out the comics when I have some time.
Hmm. Questions.

Do you spend more on music/books/movies/food to cover different tastes?

Do you each have different relationships with friends? I ask because I had a coworker with D.I.D. and she said she has a "roommate" (her favourite term) who doesn't get along with men in any capacity.

Huh. Guess I missed a lot yesterday (or not i didn't bother to check). You mention having different skillsets, so would someone be able to pick up a physical/technical skill where another wouldn't? (like, let's say, studying language or dancing)

Also, do you have different favourite movies and music?

Also, also, happy birthday :D

When you interact with each other (conversations etc.) do you see a mental image of each other? I'm not sure how to explain what I mean - so there will be two of you having a conversation, do you see each other simultaneously? Like a double image, as it were, seeing from two different sets of eyes? or is it just hearing each other speak, and no seeing?

Well, I feel silly

I thot the "multi" in Rogan's icon was for "multi-amoury" because poly is grammatically incorrect... Welp, live 'n' learn, right? >>;

Is there any media that has gotten it RIGHT? I remember watching Sybil, which has a big "Based on a true story" in front of it, and thinking "Soooo probably wildly inaccurate then?" That little actress was terrific though.

Sorry if this has been asked or it's in your FAQ (still reading that! So many questions)

but question on your interaction with people, do you find singlet's catch on quickly when the person leading is around or are we a bit slow to catch on?

Also what is everyone's favourite food and how do you go about sorting out take out nights?

(personally I'm alright with whatever with friends but I will fight to the death with my brother to get what I want lol)

Hi LB, I have a question, if you're still answering? I'm so sorry if I'm phrased any of this offensively. I went through your site to try and make sure, but I'm not good at words and often muck up.

There's a common narrative in fiction (and one or two documentaries I watched about 10 years ago) that the 'main personality' is never aware of the other personalities in MPD/DID. From the info on your site this seems very, very inaccurate. So is it just a huge fallacy propogated by misinformed authors? Or does it depend on an individual system (is that an okay way to phrase it??)?

Thanks for sharing this thread and your site with us. It's been really interesting to read through the information here and there. Love your comics, btw. :)

So you started using multiple "personalities" as a coping mechanism for something traumatic that happened to you, right? (I thought you said that upthread but maybe I misunderstood) Did you consciously start doing it as a way to disassociate with the trauma, or did you find that you were starting to do it automatically? Do you consciously create these different characters of your identity? Do you have a goal to "recover" one day, or do you feel that there's nothing problematic to be recovered from?

I don't know much about DID, but I'm curious! I read the wiki, for what that's worth, apparently it's super controversial in definition, diagnosis and what causes it. I suppose every case is different, which makes it even more difficult to pin down. Do you work at all with researchers and psychologists to help learn more about the disorder?

So um, I know this is from yesterday, and you can ignore this if you don't want to answer anymore questions or if it's just plain too personal, but I was wondering about something you said on your info page? It took me a while to read through everything, to make see if my question would be ok, but I don't know if it will, so tell me you don't wanna answer if you don't. But, um, why was it so bad for some of you when you realized you weren't just characters from a story in someone's head? I've heard this a few times, and it's not something I really understand. I mean, I thought it was a relief, because I wasn't having fake conversations with people I'd just made up, and it was nice not to be alone anymore and try to explain everyone away. I mean, I get that it might just be a different experience, and stuff, but I've always wondered why it's so hard to realize you're really a real person, just like everyone else. But yea, if it's too personal, i get that too. Curiosity doesn't entitle information, and stuff.

Also, since we're still getting responses: this thread is open unto perpetuity. Ten years later, if someone finds this thread and has a question, leave it and if we're still around, we'll answer. It's all good.
