Fandom pet peeves

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
So we already have unpopular opinions, now what is a pet peeve specific to one of your fandoms?

Re: Fandom pet peeves

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
People who bitch and moan every time their favorite character isn't in the new chapter or episode. These also tend to be people with a trend of not caring about main characters, which makes me suspect they like characters they can project onto because there's not as much canon about them. I want to ask them, "If your favorite character appeared as often as you think you want, would they even be your favorite character?"

Re: Fandom pet peeves

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
That does seem a bit silly. And sometimes it's best when favorite characters aren't - one of mine ended up getting a lot more screentime, and I actually didn't like him as much when he did. He was killed off in that same installment, and I was so sick of his character (in that particular book) I just sort of rolled my eyes and kept reading.

Not really in it that much, but when a SPN fan adds a SPN gif to a post all, "WOW SPN HAS A GIF FOR EVERYTHING!"

Not specific, but I sort of hate that fandom/fandom-ish places tend to assume that all fandom is sci fi/action/fantasy. Some of us like other things too. I get so sick of reading movie/TV show/book lists (any topic) and realizing there's one non-action/sci fi/fantasy on there. If even. I don't expect people to have deep thoughts about chick flicks, but come on.

I get annoyed that slash vs nonslash is perceived (by gen fans as well as slash fans) as an issue of "not seeing it." As if people would immediately be all about the slash if they could just have something go "click!" in their heads so that they could accept the characters as a couple. Just...sorry, no. Not how it works.

A lot of my favorite friendships are also big slash ships, and I can totally "see" the characters being in a romantic relationship (and often enjoy reading slash fic a hell of a lot, and not just for the porn), but I just generally like platonic friendship better. I see enough "romance is the most important thing!!11" plastered all over canonical works, so I just don't like that for a lot of fandom shipping, there's a strong vibe of "fixing" non-romance-centered canons by rewriting them into some big love story instead of an adventure story, or a politics story, or a friendship story, or a crime story, or a detective story, or a sci-fi story, or a superhero story, or whatever.

This applies to non-canon het pairings too (I'm way more impatient with this than with slash tbh), and canon het pairings that are blown way up out of proportion (*cough* can you say X-Files or M*A*S*H or The fucking West Wing *cough*), but most of my fandoms at the moment are slash-oriented, which is why that's more of a pet peeve right now.

Just...it's the unique quality of platonic-ness, not romance, that usually gives me that extra-special thrill that most other fans get from the unique quality of romance. I don't know how else to explain it. Romance is not "friendship + even more good stuff" for me. Okay, whine over.

That people don't tag for all-human AUs. For multiple reasons, some being that I am watching a show about supernatural beings and would like to read about supernatural beings. Yes it makes a difference. Also for narrative purposes because sometimes it's just not clear in the writing and I spend so much time trying to figure it out and it completely takes me out of the story.

People will put the dumbest tumblr-style tags but they can't put actual simple useful tags in there.

I don't know if this is a fandom wide trend or just in my fandom, but lately I've seen a lot of "recs lists" that are just every single fic that fits under X label. That's not a rec, that's just a list. And it's a pain because some of them are truly spectacularly awful, yet they make all of these recs lists anyway. I mean I could wade through the tags at ao3 just as easy, so what's the point?

I hate the idea of "real fans," particularly in the Doctor Who and Star Wars fandoms. Especially because you get it from every side. In Star Wars, you have the OT-only fans who think that real Star Wars fans hate the prequels and then you have the all-6 fans who think that real fans love everything in Star Wars canon (and then the EU fans who think you have to know every little detail to be real fans). In Doctor Who, you have the Ten-only fans, the all New Who fans, and the Classic Who fans who all think that they are the only real Doctor Who fans.

It gets old, fast. Why can't we just agree to disagree. Sure, debate. But we're talking opinion here. None of this is objective and we're all real fans who enjoy our fandoms in different ways. Stop trying to ruin the enjoyment of other people, tell them they are objectively wrong for liking something, and saying that they aren't real fans.

How everyone's fancast of x show/movie/book/video game includes the same rotating roster of currently popular actors and actresses. Yes, Lucy Lui is cool. No, she doesn't need to be in everything. Ditto Natalie Dormer. Ditto Tom Hiddleston, although his popularity isn't quite what it was when Avengers came out.

Stupid jerks who trash a show or movie and say it'll suck before they see it. They go into it looking for excuses to pick it apart, and they walk around pontificating about how they were right and it sucked. And they butt into any talk about it with unwanted commentary about how it sucks and anyone who's into it is a/an (insert clever derogatory term here.)

Fucking killjoys. I hate them.

People who try to force feed their fandom favorites onto me. You know what that does? It causes me to hate that band/show/movie/book etc. Good thing it doesn't happen often, but now thanks to someone who can't stop verbal vomiting about Game of Thrones onto me I never want to watch it.

When everybody in the fandom ships something, and I just don't get it, and I just can't ship it. Even worse when they loudly insist it's "OMG SO CANON!"

Right now, this applies to Hannibal fandom (the Hannibal/Will ship). it's everywhere, and I can't escape it. I actually used to sort-of ship it myself, in a fucked-up kinda way, but with how prevalent it is and how loud the shippers are, it's evolved from indifference to loathing.

This also applies to Supernatural fandom's obsession with Dean/Cas and how it's TOTALLY CANON YOU GUIZE. Over time, it actually starts to eat away at my enjoyment of the show.

I hate when Seven is portrayed as being completely innocent when it comes to anything sexual (often to the point of outright idiocy) in fanfic, right down to having a fully-intact hymen. And I know that last bit's a petty grievance, but it just seems to me like the borg wouldn't be considerate enough to be careful around that area when they're arc-welding metal and hardware into every spare millimeter of flesh. I mean, I guess the Doctor could've restored it after he finished using a giant can opener to get all that plating off, but that seems kind of skeevy.

Anyway, it's annoying how often that whole virginity fetish crops up even in femmeslash.

It also annoys me how few smutfics that explore the erotic possibilities of Seven's borg attributes. Surely she could do some interesting things with those tubules alone.

People getting mad because, shock of all shocks, popular characters get more attention than less popular characters. K fandom's been having issues with this ever since the Lost Small World manga was announced and you people do realize franchises do not run on pixie dust and story ideas they run on money, and Fushimi/Yata stuff makes money. The amusing part is I've seen people complaining because "They're not even the main characters, why aren't they focusing more on the leads?" but then also "OMG there's enough stuff about them, why aren't Gora focusing on these minor characters who didn't even have a personality until the manga?" Can't win.

Like, on the one hand I do sympathize with the annoyance of a franchise focusing on characters you don't care much about (I still read Bleach even though I don't care about the Shinigami, in the vain hope that someday Ishida will be allowed to do things again) but on the other the complaining is getting really tiresome and I'm getting annoyed at the way certain people seem to think they are somehow 'better' fans or the only ones 'doing fandom right' because they like less popular characters, doncha know, and they don't care about ships they are so much more enlightened than you plebes who are forcing Gora to make more Sarumi material because how dare you like popular characters. If you're upset blame the creators, don't take it out on the fans like they're the ones ruining fandom by daring to enjoy a thing.

Oh man, okay. Rant about SnK because I really need to get it out.

Levi/Eren becoming THE most popular ship in this fandom still boggles my mind. How did this happen? Worse of all, whenever I want to read Jean/Armin fics, go to AO3, check the Jean/Armin tag... and I get it as a side pairing to 84593853 different Levi/Eren fics where they are the metaphorical dust in the wind in the fic.

Marco being held up so high, he's almost in a fandom pedestal when his biggest achievement was pep-talking talking Jean and then dying. Yeah... I don't dislike him, but canon-wise I'm not nuts over him either (and actually prefer him in fic, where he DOES get character development). He might as well be canonized in fanon.

It's a REALLY minor pet peeve - no, not even a pet peeve, more a very mild disappointment - that there are a bunch of Pokemon players who don't name their team members. (It also means there is a 95% chance I will keep anything I get in Wonder Trade with a non-ridiculous name, even if its stats/nature/ability are rubbish.) I don't know, I think it'd feel quite incomplete going through the entire journey without naming your Pokemon!

The fandom's obsession with female protagonists in games to the exclusion or anger about people actually choosing to play "cis"males.
