None of what you're saying has anything to do with animation as a medium. The medium isn't for children. It's just that most of the stuff that gets made n the medium is for children.

while i don't share your opinion that animation is a lesser medium, i know what it's like to not be able to enjoy it. it doesn't "click" with me the way live-action does, i guess. i haven't like an animation movie/show since i was 13.

If you thought Watership Down was "either one note or meaningless fluff," I really don't know what to say to you - other than that it isn't other people's taste in movies you should be questioning.

I don't like half the movies in your secret but you have no fucking idea what you are talking about. Animation is not a medium just for children. (I wouldn't consider 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' or 'Up on Poppy Hill' children's movies at all.) There are plenty of animated films whose target audience is children, but it is not a children's genre.

There are so many bad live-action films just as there are many bad animated films. It seems you are conveniently forgetting that bad live-action films exist. Or, you like that shit, in which case I question your taste in turn.

btw, I loved a lesser known The Count of Monte Cristo (1997), it's very nice.
ps: And I hope to see here some recs because I didn't like most of recent animated movies.

You seriously found Watership Down and The Last Unicorn to be "meaningless fluff"? ...I don't think you should go around badmouthing other people's taste in movies.

Also, you seem to think that animation is a genre. It really isn't.

It's obviously not the most pressing issue in the world, but this contributes to the problem of people not taking animation seriously.

It's another visual style, not a genre.

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-06-22 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if you're looking for something like, say, Memento or Requiem for a Dream, you're less likely to find it in animation.

That being said, there are some great animation films. Some I do find too childlike...but even the ones targeted at kids can be amazing.

Just because you have a classic story with a 3-part structure, a hero's journey and good vs bad, doesn't mean it can't be a good story with interesting characters, moving moments, and a great message. To be honest, I think if you hate all of them, you're probably a bit jaded.

There are some pretty awful live action movies too…

Hey if I can take my mother to see an animated film and she enjoys it, that's a good thing in my books. Granted she has Alzheimer's, but it's more important that my mother enjoyed it and was happy.

Okay. Um. You can like or dislike anything you want, but ... you can't level an accusation of 'one note' or 'meaningless fluff' and then open with Watership Down. What? That thing is in no way, shape or form fluffy, and I don't think you can call something 'one note' when it has its own complete interal mythology and language, and contains two completely separate and different types of dystopic political systems, as well as several more functional ones. What is the single note you think it hits?

I will also strongly argue both the 'fluff' and 'one note' characteristics of Last Unicorn and Hunchback (though they did tone that one waaaay down from the book), but mostly I'm just ... you opened with Watership Down? Honestly?

I dunno. I think people are more forgiving of animated movies (even if they don't mean to be) because they know it's meant for children and there's an unconscious allowance made for that. Either that or nostalgia goggles. A lot of people welcome the opportunity to sit back, relax their standards and enjoy a movie the way they did when they were a child. It's like eating ice cream for dinner even when you know it's not a nutritionally balanced meal.

I've seen plenty of live action fluff. I've seen plenty of animated joy.

What I'm getting from this secret is that you are a jackass with no taste.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-22 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Or maybe you have a warped idea of what makes a 'solid' or meaningful movie. Sorry there were no titties or girls dying to give the man meaningful pain.

Oh, Dog of Flanders! I wrote my dissertation on the woman who wrote that story (pictured in this icon). That's her only work that's endured past the first half of the 20th century.

I...sort of agree?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-22 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Not with the specific wording, but with the general sentiment of "I don't understand why people make such a huge deal about animated movies." Granted, I've seen less than half the movies in this secret, but with all other animation I've watched, I haven't been able to pay attention for more than the first third of the movie. It doesn't matter the genre; something about animation just completely turns me off.

Well, if you considered The Great Mouse Detective and Watership Down "one-note" and "meaningless fluff" but liked Fantastic Mr. Fox, IDK what to tell you. /s

In all seriousness, part of your problem may be that you were trying to challenge your assessment that the genre is "for children", but still watched movies aimed at children, like TGMD and Frozen and HTTYD. They're good movies and adults can enjoy them, but they're not targeted at us.

If you're still open to try some things, I'd recommend basically everything from Studio Ghibli, but particularly Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away, as those are the ones that are the most acclaimed and have pretty clear adult/significant messages.

Also, Kirikou et la Sorcière. I fucking love that movie. Everyone should watch it, it's on Youtube and everything.
