Re: How would you define a "vintage" fandom?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I would define it as something that a) started before 1990 and b) stopped having any more canon spin-offs, etc, added to it before 2000.

Lion King. Band of Brothers oddly enough.

Brian Eno's "I'll Come Running" ... the latter has the line I'll come running to tie your shoe which for some reason has always made me grin and grin.

I don't even care what his personality is. His movies are boring to decent to me (although I really did like Castle in the Sky) and I get sick of all the praise he gets, when there are many more interesting anime and movies in general out there.

God damn it I wish I had cool old people who liked cartoons who would also want to talk about cartoons with me too. My grandma digs Winnie the Pooh, but she's all the way in the Guatemala :(

The cryptozoologists who've been getting a lot of money and press lately are often YECs (they're getting a lot of money and press because they're getting funding and publicity from the Christian Right) but the core of cryptozoology still prefers entirely different modes of batshittery, no worries.

Basically this. Also his make-up, which looked more like a bad case of psoriasis than an actual disfigurement.

Fanwork for old fandoms

(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
What's the oldest and/or most obscure fandom you've ever done fanwork for? Or wanted to do fanwork for?

I working on a Some Like it Hot fic right now that I doubt anyone will read, so I'm curious.

I don't think so but I wish the Loch Ness Monster was real.

lol, I don't know the canon on this one, but this is really reminding me of how many people were mad about Ace Attorney 5 because of Robin's storyline apparently being transphobic. Everyone seemed convinced she was a trans man even though (like with this character, though the opposite) she was forcibly raised as a boy by her parents, which... sounds a lot more like a trans woman to me, if anything! So when it ends by affirming her identity as a woman, everyone got mad because it's supposedly telling trans men they'll be happier as their assigned sex. I swear, tumblr has a really hard time with comprehension on things like this, and it kind of embarrasses me as a trans person.

(Like, don't get me wrong Robin is still the worst character in the series, but it's not because of that...)

I agree they had chemistry and I'm love a darker, more sex-driven version of the story. But tbh I'd prefer it not to be an incarnation of the ALW one.

X-Men: Days of Future Past/Any fandom that is set in the 1970s

(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Or has canonical events that take place in the 1970s (like the Marauder era/First Wizarding War in Harry Potter)

There was an article which said that the Yeti was an unrecorded species of bear, based on DNA testing of some hair found. And didn't the Mokèlé-mbèmbé turn out to have been real, but a recently extinct rhino sub-species? If there are cryptids then the explanation will definitely not be as fantastical as the common depictions.

Mya would be a better choice, because this sounds like a joke. Right?

Re: How would you define a "vintage" fandom?

[personal profile] morieris 2014-07-02 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't define any fandom like that for another hundred years except maybe Star Trek and Sherlock Holmes.

Re: Real Men Underwear Advert

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-07-02 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a single point of contention that none of the real men bothered stuffing their crotches... I understand how some people could interpret that as more fakery in the photoshopped model ads, but according to most advertising standards (in NA at least) I don't think you're allowed penis outlines in general audience underwear ads. Similar to how you're usually not allowed to show female nipples in swimwear ones.

Just a quibble.

If that were true, why would he (in this case) keep presenting as a girl after his father was gone? Why would a father "punish" his daughter by making her present as a girl?

Just... what?

Re: Crackiest crossovers that you really want to see (in fic or otherwise)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Voyager, I think. Definitely Voyager. Mostly because I want to see the Doctor react to everything. If A'Tuin is going to exist anywhere in the Trek verse, the Delta quadrant is probably where it'll be.

Also, I want to see Starfleet attempt to run Nobby through a species classification databank. Oooh! And Hex! Actually, Ponder would probably get on splendidly with Star Fleet engineers. Trek runs on narrative nonsenseleum just as much as the Disc, just with more technobabble involved, and if anyone could make the two systems mutually comprehensible (or enough to be going on with), it'd be Ponder.

Also, Rincewind and the Voyager crew could probably exchange notes on cruel and unusual geography best appreciated at speed ;)
