...dammit, now I have to start drawing girls again so I can make this true. Not particularly just for you--tho I'm sure you, the OP, are perfectly awesome and worth it--, but because the challenge of pulling off a lead-lead female in a shounen-esque series would probably take everything I've got. There's so many stereo-types to steer clear from--so many lines to tip-toe against, it'd be worth every second. How do you pull off a Shounen Female without making her a guy with boobs? Where do gender-roles come into play? CAN gender-roles come into play, or is that too much drama?

Its official, I'm gonna have to start reading Shounen again to research this. Like, now.

...dammit, only they're all so damn long, aren't they? Crap.

What. ?_?

It's not as hard as that. Media may rarely try to stray from the norm, but making a female character that isn't stereotypical isn't rocket science.

41. This secret is beautiful, and I love it.

I love everyday stories. Although, I like them most when they are entwined with saving the world... but I also think tha everyday scenes show characters well.

(Maybe that's why I tend to like 'filler' other fans hate? ._.)

Also that food makes me hungery

I might be a minority here, but I actually think the reason most people (as the replies here would seem to suggest) prefer to write about ordinary, slice-of-life stuff is because action scenes and the likes are actually hard to do well. It takes a certain skill to make scenes like that flow naturally as well as be compelling to a reader, and call me an elitist, but I don't think most writers in fandom really have the chops to do it. Not to mention that something like a good fight scene or a murder mystery? Would probably require research and some figuring out in terms of logistics. It's natural to prefer writing things that are more in your comfort zone.

In my case, I used to always think of myself as a person who read exclusively in the slice-of-life genre (fanfic-wise, anyway). Then one day, I decided to give an action/adventure story a try, just to see what the hype was about (it was very highly recommended), and I was just blown away. It was the same kind of rush you'd get from reading professional writing in the same genres, and I realized that the only reason I'd been so against that kind of fic before was because I hadn't found many people in fandom who could pull off that kind of thing successfully. So... not to knock the slice-of-life style or anything, but I do think there's a certain touch when it comes to plotting that not everyone can claim to have. Which is natural, really, because good writing doesn't happen for everyone either.

2. Yay for Tim Gunn love. Loli is what it is though. Kawaii culture is a strange and dark thing.

7. Some may argue that the fanservice is what makes shonen what it is. But I think you mean you'd like to see an action anime with (more?) respectable female characters. I would like to see this also.

15. Not the world, just Adult Swim. You're definitely not alone.

16. OK. I will.

41. Your secret is making me hungry. (mmm katsu)

[identity profile] runic-binary.livejournal.com 2007-12-19 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
7. Try One Piece. ...Well, except for the fanservice part. (I love Oda to death, but he is such a boy sometimes. XD)

40. No, you don't sound homophobic. I completely agree.

I concur. My first pairing was Ron/Hermione from Harry Potter and I loved it to bits. I loved it since I first read The Goblet of Fire, I think (I was nine). I loved it so much and I was totally crazy about it. . . UNTIL. . . The Half Blood Prince. I then got bored of it. Canon ruins pairings. |:

[identity profile] lostremnant.livejournal.com 2007-12-19 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
11. Somehow I don't think the person you are disgusted with will really have a good chance of getting into the FBI if that's the reason they want to join.

20. Well people should know by now what to expect if they post a secret so if their feelings get hurt it's their own fault.

26. Hell there are people in fandom who doubt those who say they are lesbian or they doubt people who say that they are gay. Just ignore them and be yourself. If they don't believe that you're asexual, that's their problem not yours.

35. So you have a hobby but you have no interest in improving your skills in this hobby. Well that's fine if you keep it all to yourself but why post your fics if you have no interest in improving your writing? I'm always trying to improve my writing because I want people to enjoy what I write and I don't think people enjoy bad writing.

40. Preaching about anything makes for a boring fic.

[identity profile] youmusteatit.livejournal.com 2007-12-19 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
27. Your poor Dad. :( You should show him.

[identity profile] mireia-antonina.livejournal.com 2007-12-19 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
21. Maria! <3 And Nami, too! You have good taste. :3

33. I don't blame you at all.

[identity profile] elystia.livejournal.com 2007-12-19 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
15. You're not alone! I despise their shows more than anything else on television. It makes my stomach turn and it's just not funny.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-19 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
THE WORLD NEEDS TO KNOW WHERE 4 IS FROM!

Thank you.

1. This secret made me sad. I'm so sorry for you. *random anonymouse hug*

7. Christ. What series are you watching? I can name several shows off the top of my head where the girl is the center of attention. Or are you talking about attention in the fandom, not in canon?

11. People who do that are stupid.

12. I should not post this anonymously because I feel for you and understand where you're coming from.

16. Same type of animation =/= good story/plot/series.

20. The price for being an attention whore posting something in public.

26. *yawns* Would you like a trophy now?

35. Word pie.

41. It's not bad. It is boring to read.

Er, Bleach, Naruto, Reborn, Prince of Tennis, Eyeshield, D. Grayman...?

[identity profile] chicafrom3.livejournal.com 2007-12-19 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
26. I have the same damn problem. Every time anybody in a fandom-related discussion references asexuality, somebody pops up to doubt the existence of asexuality in general/mock "fandom asexuals"/imply that we only identify as asexual because we can't get laid. Idiots.

I used to pop into those discussions to argue back, because dammit, I've done a lot of soul-searching and research about my orientation and I am comfortable with the fact that this is what I am. Now I just roll my eyes and let it go, because you can't change the idiots' minds.

I refuse to conceal the fact that I'm aromantic asexual, but I'm less likely now to point it out and defend it publicly. Why should I give myself a headache, knowing that their opinions are unlikely to change?

32. I'm the same way. Why don't people realize that fandom is a convenient method of procrastination, not a root cause?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/__fantine/ 2007-12-19 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
2. I would spread my coat over a puddle so that Tim wouldn't have to step in it, but then he'd criticize me for getting my coat wet.
I seriously considered apping Parsons/going to NYU just so I could learn from the master.
And I'm not even fashion-conscious. I just think he's amazing.

9. I just finished Haruhi the other day, and I adore those two. I've also started crack-shipping Fay and Itsuki, because my best friend is a horrible person. I like Itsuki/Kyon, but I haven't really stepped into the fandom yet and it looks like it's going to be hard to find.

41. I admit that I love "slice of life" fics, especially for action shows/movies/games/books. You don't really get to see the everyday life of the villain, for example. Although when I find those fics, they tend to be stupid humor, which sucks.

IAWTC

Nobody out there seems to like Hound. Not even the show's writers, who seemed to have him in line for the kid-appeal character slot until he got shoved out of the way three episodes later by that asshole, Bumblebee.

I don't have or want a Jeep either. I love my Saturn and the amount of money I don't have to spend on gas. Though I did want a Wrangler for a while.

2. There totally needs to be a shirt that says "What would Tim Gunn Say?!" IRONY! and I would wear it. Though, I bet we could make it stylish. . .

20. I have to be honest. I saw this and I really wanted to say "But a person has to know your name to kill you with when using a DeathNote" :3 Sorry.

It's painful to see our secrets mocked or ripped apart or stabbed at for whatever reason. At the same time, it is painful to hold onto our secrets and make assumptions.

1. I am so sorry...

2. Dude, Tim Gunn is MY GOD. I'd kill for him to see him have a special on anime conventions <3!

12. You're more than welcome to talk to me, because I know EXACTLY how you feel.

14. I personally think that Simca is one of the most shallow characters :\

16. ...NOW YOU GOT ME INTERESTED! My friend is a huge fan of Overman King Gainer, but I didn't know that the character designs were done by the person that did E7! (I LEARN SOMETHING AWESOME EVERY DAY)

17. That game likes to fuck with the inner musician-tard in me D:

My parents threaten to send me on "What not to Wear" because of lolita/jfashion in general.

I told them if they did I would laugh in Stacy and Clinton's faces because my wardrobe is worth more than $5000 and much harder to replace. :D

Personally I'd rather see someone in lolita than bland American mall fashion. So much of "normal" fashion is based on looking like a sex object- what's wrong with wanting to look like a princess instead?

Re: #2

(Anonymous) 2007-12-19 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
This just kinds of prove my point, though. Just because something is expensive (and $5000 spent on EGL alone, I feel, is excessive) doesn't necessarily mean it looks good. I'm from the Less Is More school, anyway, which loli definitely doesn not conform with.

35. Wait, so just because someone takes their writing seriously, because they have, oh, I dunno, ambition, you look down on them? I mean, I'm all for casual fanfiction writing, but...

Just because it's a hobby for you doesn't mean you can look down on other people for being serious about it.

(That might not have not been your intent, but that statement just struck me as ridiculously arrogant)

36. ... it scares me a little that I understand that sentiment (not for the Heroes fandom, but just in general).

41. Not at all. I love writing my characters doing normal things, especially when they're in a very action/drama oriented series.

Re: 35, 36, 41

(Anonymous) 2007-12-19 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
35. funnily enough, I empathize with the secret maker because I'm sure they have been looked down upon by fans who take their writing so seriously that they ridicule and demean those who aren't looking to be professional writers as being less worthy of writing fanfiction and participating in fandoms.

1. Oh god, I'm so sorry.

2. That... that middle one is... o_o

7. Probably.

15. Actually, the world DOES just give any idiot a television show nowadays.

26. I'm sorry you have to put up with that. :(

28. Heh, I've dabbled in that pairing. Only slash I can see for that game, honestly -- well, aside from the obviousness that is Auron/Braska/Jecht, of course.

32. Are you me?

40. Not at all. I totally understand what you mean, and it drives me nuts. Go preach somewhere else, and while you're at, can we get something besides the Romeo-and-Juliet crap, plz?

41. NOT AT ALL. Those kind of scenes are the best ones. ♥ Fighting scenes are pain in the ass to write, and I'd take dialogue and mundane activities any day, especially in stuff where most of what they do in canon is fight.

43. YES YES YES. HAVE A SLICE OF WORD WITH A SIDE OF WIN AND FUCK YEAH FROSTING. It's more fun when there's just the hints and subtext, honestly.

TB. Dude, isn't everyone in that manga a bastard in some way?
