So when she was three, my sister had an acute and really scary reaction to an MMR vaccination. In response, my mother made the descision not to vaccinate me at all, or to give my sister any more. (Tbh, I thought she was anti-vax for years until I realized she was simply using the movement's literature to convince our school that no, she didn't want her specific children to be vaccinated after that incident. She was dealing with people who believed that a child who had seizures after each shot still had to get them. No common sense at all.)

Anyway, my sister's all grown up now and she's a nurse, meaning she had to have several mandatory vaccinations, and it appears she's gotten over what was probably a childhood allergy. I've always had a really healthy immune system but I attribute that to genetics, good environment (sheltered American kid here), and long-term breastfeeding.

So, with that context, I'm switching my medical insurance soon and I have to go in for a physical. And I'm trying to decide which vaccines I should have. I'm 26, in good physical health and not particularly at risk for anything at the moment. (I'd rather risk the flu than risk the flu shot because a. I have never had it in my life despite being exposed to it, and b. I always have the nagging feeling that this year's shot was for last year's strain.) I do know I want a tetanus shot just to be sure. I don't want any shots for illnesses that I'm extremely unlikely to get, like polio (obviously this would be different if there was an epidemic with a decent chance of getting to me). I'm not sexually active, have never been, and I don't plan on being so for a long time. If and when I do decide to have sex, I will not be sleeping with anyone who hasn't been tested. The chances of my being raped are incredibly low. But I do have interest in having children someday and would like to be clear of any potentially harmful (to a fetus) vaccines before any attempts at conception.

I'm not anti-vaccine, I simply feel that injecting potentially harmful medicine into a healthy body needs to be considered with each individual shot, weighing the risks vs the gains. I don't even know how my body will react to even one shot.

So finally, long rambling over, what do you, you rabidly vaccine-loving populous you, think I should absolutely be inoculated against?

I would definitely talk to your doctor. As someone who is not a medical professional, I can only recommend you take a look at what is still possible to catch. Whooping cough/pertussis is making a comeback because people aren't vaccinating their children. I'd also talk to your doctor about the chickenpox vaccine if you've never had it because it's way worse to catch it as an adult and was super common for children.

Do you know what they call people who say they don't need a polio vaccine? Iron Lung customers. And occasionally, corpses. Polio is still a killer, and it isn't dead yet.

Polio, tuberculosis, tetanus, and whooping cough for starters. Flu shots aren't that crucial, if you are not suffering from other illnesses that might affect you general health and fitness.

Ask your doctor, and do what they recommend.

Don't do it for you. Do it to maintain herd immunity for the sake of people who -- like your sister when she was little -- can't get vaccinated.

Herd immunity protected you when you were young and vulnerable and unvaccinated -- pay it forward!

Definitely get a measles vaccine. I don't know if you can get it separately from MMR, but measles is making a comeback in the US (and worldwide, especially China) and that shit's awful. My dad had it as a kid in the 1950s.

At least the basics?

Like hexavaccine (diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, hepatitis B,
polio, haemophilus influenzae) or its adult version and TBC and I am sure there others, but I don't remember enough about vaccination practices and illness in NA.

But really the most important thing to do, is have a proper consultation with your doctor. We can suggest, but they should know best.

I'm allergic to the flu shot antibiotic/preservative (gentamicin), and have had success with FluMist; ymmv, look up the info, etc. You can get FluMist up to age 59, if you're allergic to the shots.

Also def. get TdP, basically tetanus/diptheria/whooping cough. It's next to impossible to get diptheria these days, thanks to proper water sanitation, but as someone who didn't get the full-strength tDap when I was younger, and came down with pertussis, trust me. Get the shot.

The only other vaccine I'm coming up on (BTW TdP has to be renewed every ten years; keep the card they give you, so you'll know to keep it current) is shingles, and I'm definitely getting that one, as I had chickenpox when I was a kid, and based on what has already happened to several members of my family, I may be predisposed, and I do NOT want to go through that.

Those are the ones I would recommend, YMMV, read up on everything, yadda yadda yadda. The best way to feel the most comfortable with your decision is going into it with as much knowledge as possible (including the side effects, potential side effects, any studies, etc). Also ask the GP as many questions as possible; if the doctor blows you off, find another doctor ASAP.

Disclaimer: This is something you're better off discussing with your doctor rather than random people on the internet.

Yeah, um... that's all of them. I mean statistically, you're not likely to come down with tetanus, it's just that the results can be really nasty if you do which is why people get shots. That's why epidemics like polio are no longer the huge public health issue they once were: people got their vaccines even though they were healthy. You don't vaccinate someone who's already sick, they're a preventative measure and that goes for flu shots as well.

What's missing from this list is "the benefit of herd immunity from all the people who did get a vaccine and therefore did not get sick and pass them on to me".

When you weigh the pros and cons, your cons mostly consist of "I have a vague concern about vaccines that is not backed up by actual medical information". It's okay to be concerned, but don't make medical decisions based on abstract fears, it's just not sound decision making. If you're worried about possible reactions, it's a good idea to tell your doctor that your sister had a bad reaction to them as a child but she's since had them with no trouble. Then ask what you as a healthy 20-something who's never been vaccinated should get. He/she will likely recommend you get all of the ones you missed: MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), TdaP (tetanus, diptheria, pertussis), chicken pox if you haven't had it as a kid, HPV, Hep A and B.

All of them except the Flu Vaccine pretty much. You only need to get the Flu Vaccine if you have respiratory problems, lowered immune system (either because of age, or other illnesses) and/or are in a heightened risk to give the flu to someone in the danger zone.

Also the Flu Vaccine you are getting is for the strains they see coming towards where you live, it isn't always perfect, but it is not for the strain they got last year. Which is why it sometimes fail, because they are playing the numbers as it is impossible to predict all the different strains of the flu your area will get. Which isn't to say it doesn't work, most of the time the guesses are right and they safe the life of thousands of people every year.

Vaccines are quite safe and the chance of side effects are quite small.

I have been vaccinated for everything under the sun* so have everyone I know and the worst side effect I got was from the Hep A/B vaccine and that lasted a day (I couldn't lift my arm above shoulder level) and was something I was told about beforehand and it wasn't dangerous. Oh and the BCG (That is the one against TB) vaccine hurt as hell to get, but that isn't dangerous either, I do have a scar behind my left shoulder from it tho, which everyone who got the same shot I did have.

*Well not literally, but between my childhood vaccines, the first shot was a vaccination against 10 different diseases (at 3 months I think?), then I got my 1 year shots, 3 year shots and the revaccinations and stuff during school, and also I went on Holiday to Gambia and got some extra shots because of that.

upd. for Hepatitis B it's mandatory and for type A depends on your risk factors.

Rabies, HPV, Hepatitis, Measles. But you should really have all of your vaccinations up to date.


If you're that much of a tool who doesn't understand biology, I'll put it in terms you can understand: all of the above are incurable, can potentially kill you, and could endanger the lives of anyone who might be exposed to them through you.

Vaccination is not an insurance for your personal health, it's insurance for your health and for the people you might potentially infect even though you could be asymptomatic. God damn, people like you make me incredibly angry.

To everyone who took my questions seriously and responded in a kind, informative way, I thank you very much. You may have saved my life and those of many others. You may consider me to be someone who is definitely on the path to getting fully inoculated.

To the vast majority who could not resist insulting me and generally acting like douche bags instead of trying to be helpful, I'd like you to think of me as someone who will never be inoculated, and I hope you live in fear of me breathing diseases on your children.
