It's probably more likely some people just started doing it 1-on-1...

(Anonymous) 2014-11-19 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I did some 1-on-1 fic exchanging with a friend a few years ago. I didn't think of it as RPing, but it probably was, now you put it like that.

It was a very different feeling to doing it out in the open, though. We could totally indulge each other's kinks, both narrative and other, and there was no pressure from others to keep it going after we got bored.

Yeah, this. I still RP with a couple of people but it's definitely not 'out there' for everyone to see.

I shifted from a group to 1-on-1. The group was dominated by the constant RL deamas of it's leader, while the 1-on-1 was only hampered by our timezones.

1-on-1 feels more like fanfic writing anyway, just a kind where not all the characters are controlled by one person and dialogue can end up just as random and free as RL.

In the last couple of days I've even returned to it again - I needed to escape Inquisition while all the first play-through is happening.

I feel you, sort of. I took up RPing on Tumblr for a while earlier this year and decided fuck no, there was a reason I left. I don't know if you could count me as a good writer in my fandom, but public RP like that honest to god kills my motivation to write anything else, and overall exhausts my creative energy. Now I do most of my RPing privately, which for some reason isn't such a downer on my drive.

I just don't understand the appeal of RP on any level. It's just bizarre to me. But to each their own I suppose.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-19 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't understand it either, until I dipped my toes into it. Now I totally get it.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-19 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
It's exactly the same as writing fanfic, just with multiple people involved.

I like it because it's spontaneous and because the people you're playing with can take plots in directions you didn't expect or would never have thought of on your own. You have to think on your feet, and in that sense I feel it gives me a much better understanding of how the character thinks than just writing fic does.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-19 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
it's got the fun of writing and the fun of reading and the fun of not really knowing what will happen next since you're playing with another person

(Anonymous) 2014-11-19 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I never really got into RPs when they were more popular, but I recently discovered one that reads more like a regular collaborative work than a traditional RP that makes me kind of wish that I was more active and could get involved in something similar.

I can completely feel you on this, OP. I've got a fandom that's gone RP-mad, and while it hasn't spawned a lot of drama, it has monopolized the time of people who had once been contributing to fandom in other ways. There are wonderful artists who stopped drawing, and wonderful writers who stopped producing fic.

And I get why RP is so popular. You're guaranteed social interaction; you're guaranteed feedback and validation; and you're guaranteed a steady stream of ideas. But I do wish that it wasn't so consuming, and that the people involved in it were more willing to interact and create outside of it.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-19 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I've noticed this with my main fandom too, although I used to see it on Tumblr for the most part so I wonder if it's that the RP craze has died down there somewhat (in my experience RPing was replaced by ask-blogs).

The drama was ridiculous though. I have no idea what any of their actual RP plots were about but the RPers themselves were like a soap opera, with all their falling out and hooking up, sending themselves hate mail, cliques, fake deaths...

(Anonymous) 2014-11-19 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Ask blogs don't have the same level of drama, as far as I'm aware, and they're not quite as tiresome as RPs.

The tumblr format which prevents long discussions is a force for good, for once.

I have no problem with people RPing to their heart's content - I used to RP myself in a few fandoms - as long as they don't then post it as fic.

It's still out there, but it's possible it may have moved to a more private venue.

I agree that it can kill your drive to create your own fics and such. I was involved with a friend in such a way that we were RP'ing all of the time. It killed my drive to write anything on my own for a long time.

"Waaahhhh, I'm unhappy that some people want to do something they find fun with other people, instead of writing fic that I can enjoy instead! Clearly I am entitled to these potential fic writers' time."

Grow the fuck up, OP.

"Waaaaaah do fandom the way /I/ want you to! Make stuff for /me/ to consume! Quit enjoying fandom in a way I don't like!"

heaven forbid they eventually move on, too. Nope, they exist to write fic for you and this specific fandom.

As someone who was involved with RP for years...I completely agree. That's how it was for me, anyway. I never managed to find a group that didn't dissolve into drama after a while, and I was exposed to some really unpleasant things that haunted me for years afterwards (and drove me to self-harm at one point, that's how bad it was). My productivity as a writer dropped to almost nothing, and overall it was just a massive stupid waste of time.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-19 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Amen. Heaven forbid someone else doesn't share the same ship and won't play it out.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-19 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
This is slightly off topic, but I miss lj rp. It was so much fun and humorous.

I remember there was an rp group on dear_mun who rp'd as food, and they would have some competition over who was the best food ever or something. Some of my characters interacted with an orange and a gumdrop.

More importantly, I've enjoyed the "odd" crossover friendships (ic and ooc). Sometimes whenever I think of a crossover, I'm all, "Maybe this would be cool as some rp thread/plot idea instead of a fic". It's tough to write certain characters, (it depends, really), but the potential is still there.

Rping. ur doin it rong.

Seriously. I've been rping and fic writing for over ten years. I've had some amazing, amazing rp partners. I often prefer it. Collaborative writing is a wonderful thing.

Also, fad? Really? Rp is not a fad.

I can sort of relate, OP.

I definitely found my attention span for fics took a huge knock when I got heavily into RP. I pretty much lost all interest in fic. RP's so immediately-gratifying and fluid compared to fic-writing, so when I did eventually go back to it, it had a noticeable depreciating effect. Hahaha, I don't know whether or not I'm a good writer at all, but my fics weren't up to a standard I was personally happy with after being 99% exclusively an RPer for a couple of years. I think I'd become so reliant on not being the only person driving the plot that I'd become a little lazy.

I enjoyed the RP at the time, but I sort of felt it wasn't especially good for me. A guilty pleasure, I guess?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-19 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I had nothing but shitty experiences in RP and collaborative writing. It's one of the reasons I went back to self-harming.
