What do you want to see more of in fantasy? What concepts, what ideas, what settings, what plots?

Let's talk ideas.

Re: Inspired by #8

(Anonymous) 2014-11-23 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
more imagination put into the creatures concepts

there's only so many times you can do orcs, elves, and whatnot without them getting old

I mentioned this in the thread (although I'm not sure if it really counts as fantasy per se, but):

Has anyone ever tried to write "reverse-fantasy"? Say, have an elf or dwarf main character who dreams of living in a world where there's really only one dominant species and technology and progress are important facets instead of being stuck in a never-ending medieval dark ages with interspecies (elves vs dwarves vs orcs) wars?

My books. Published.

Fantasy on a world scale. Like not just fantasy!Europe or fantasy!Asia, but a global world in which all cultures have their own stuff going on.

Time travel and alternate dimensions.

Rejection of "destiny" and "the chosen one" as inherent world concepts.

Technology ultimately catching up to and then surpassing magic and the fallout from that.

I want to lose the "must keep my powers/dealings a secret from my parents" trope for once. Dude, if I suddenly wake up one day able to harness the powers of the solar system, or get wrapped up in a shadowy group plotting to free the dragons, the first person I'm telling is my Mom. We're close like that.

Good writing. I think that's what most of it boils down to.

I'd also like to see, in fandom, people being more willing to explore things that are out of the box of epic fantasy and noir-based or romance-based urban fantasy, because there's a lot of ground to cover and there's a lot of people who've written some really cool stuff.

Less over-reliance on european history/mythology, particularly medieval-era
Variety in creatures/species
More urban fantasy ala Anthony Horowitz's Power of Five series

Non-medieval settings, especially settings with a roughly early-modern level of technology (17th-18th c.). And certainly not steampunk.

OR

Fantasy worlds with a modern/current level of technology; not set on Earth ("urban fantasy"). I want wizards checking their magical computers while riding the bullet train to work.

Less of the entire world being in danger/saving it from some unutterable evil.

More fantasy worlds that feel like actual fantasy, that the concept of them would make me get excited.
Trying to shake up core assumptions about our world that we don't even think about because it's so ingrained.
And enough with medieval Europe.

Fantasy from the POV of magical creatures, but not for romance plots :/

Although I always used to make jokes about hitting the demographic overlap of wendy-horse-lovers and supernatural romance fans with some centaurs dudes as love interests (until I heard about the rape implications)

Honestly, what I'd just like more is things where fantasy and sci-fi meet, or it's different universes clashing, anachronisms etc.

I'd like to see more good wizards, distressed damsels, noble heroes, evil baddies, and a good helping of elves, dwarfs, and sundry creatures in faux-Dark Age/War of the Roses era.

In other words, I am completely fine with the status quo. It is my literary comfort food as it were. Because of that, it will never get old. Although some more magical forest settings would be nice.

OK, double post, but with that whole "Shrink a human down to insect level and let them discover a fairy civilisation" cliche, don't limit it to normal garden/woodland biome settings.

Magical scientists. Not necessarily an integration of tech and magic, but characters who actually devote their time to determining exactly how and why magic works, and aren't treated as pathetic by the narrative for it.

Basically the lack of curiosity and the frequency of people just saying "because magic" in fantasy settings pisses me off.

I want more horror-tinged dark fantasy. Awful secrets hidden in the depths. Ancient guardians that are basically Lovecraftian monsters. Entire kingdoms lost and empty. Twisted political drama.

And no George R. R. Martin. I like my plots to go very, very light on the weiners and rape.

I want more fantasy where the women either have rights, or are in the process of getting rights. I feel like we've said everything there is to say about women in confinement--it's starting to feel more like an excuse than a conceit.

More diverse characters. I am truly sick of spirited, intelligent white girls of noble birth who have very modern and very politically correct ideas of how their world should be saved.

Re: Inspired by #8

Re: Inspired by #8

More settings outside of Europe/medieval Europe, including creatures that aren't the usual elves/dwarves/trolls thing. Better female characters. Urban fantasy that doesn't involve romance with vampires/werewolves or shapeshifters in general. More genre mashups like fantasy/horror and fantasy/mystery. And yes, more POCs even though a lot of people throw tantrums about tokenism or SJWs.

Putting this in the right place

(Anonymous) 2014-11-24 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I've personally been wanting to see another , more urban fantasy modern Wizarding School stories, where technology is utilized rather than shunned. I'd like to see wizard kids that write up their papers on their laptop at Starbucks, get caught texting in class and have part time jobs at the local burger joint.

But also can do spells, enchant things, and brew potions, and the like. And maybe instead of having some Dark Lord, like in a lot of the existing Wizard School stories , they have to deal with enemies like obstructive bureaucrats, cheats and swindlers, and magical versions of common everyday baddies (hey to those who think this sounds boring, remember how Umbridge is hated more than Voldemort for being a more relateable villain?)

Also even for like magical criminals, they have their own branch of the police and FBI. (Oh Lord, how I would love to read about the wizard FBI or something).

This is the kind of stuff I'd like to see (and maybe write).

Less adherence to stereotypical gender conventions! I want to see the macho warrior lady rescue the scholarly damsel in distress guy. (If anyone has recs for series with this kind of thing, I'm all ears, btw.)
