You're not alone. It takes three months of waiting, enough money in my bank account to rent a second apartment, and a small act of God before I can buy a dvd or an issue of a comic book.

My way of looking at it is that pirating "wastes" the money of the people who have put resources into creating games and need an income.

I totally understand why that sort of one-sided, irrational lecturing would put you in that frame of mind though. :(
feotakahari: (Default)

Not to get into a big argument or anything . . .

[personal profile] feotakahari 2015-01-02 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
. . . but if you spend X dollars of your income on a DVD, you won't be spending those X dollars at, say, a nice restaurant. From a Utilitarian perspective, you could just as easily argue that the restaurant owner suffers from you paying for the DVD as that the show's creators suffer from you spending the money at the restaurant instead. (The restaurant's owner would indisputably suffer from a dine-and-dash, but that's because you're using up the restaurant's food, not somehow duplicating it.)

Yeah, Utilitarians pretty much have to go socialist or anarchist.

I don't know. A lot of pirates were never ever going to buy the game. There are no "lost sales" because there was no sale going to happen. And at least a few devs feel the same way.

More to the point, the piracy scene is driven by people who like to test their coding skills on cracking copy protection. This is why the retail version of The Witcher 2, which had DRM, was cracked and pirated a lot more than the DRM-free gog.com version. It's all about the cracker cred, and if there's nothing to crack then what's the point?

The irony is that many of these same cracking groups often include the admonishment to buy the game you just torrented if you like it.

I use pirating to know if I'm even going to like the game enough to justify a purchase, TBH. I have very limited income, so I'd like to actually know if I'm going to play it enough to actually want to get it.

It's half and half for me... If the producers themselves no longer get money for it, IE out of production games I will pirate it without a second thought because re-use stores tend to mark them up for bs reasons... If it's a brand new game though, I tend to just rent it rather than even look at pirating or buying.

Stop playing video games if paying for them makes you feel guilty. They're a waste of time anyway. Do something productive instead.

I never pay for anything if I can help it. There's not much that'll I'll actually spend money on because most of it is a bunch of shit that isn't worth my money or time anyway.

i so completely agree with this. as far as i'm concerned, pirating is like going to the library. if i actually want to keep something, i buy it. that happens only occasionally. in fact, most of the movies i download i watch about 45 minutes at most before deleting. i am NOT paying even 50 cents for something that isn't even worth watching the entirety of.

i also pay for netflix and hulu, so i figure that if your movie/tv show isn't on there, fuck you, i'm pirating your shit.
dethtoll: (Default)

[personal profile] dethtoll 2015-01-03 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
The only things that keep me from pirating the latest and greatest is that they're fucking huge these days, difficult to install properly (since they're all tied to Steam or Origin and the like) and there aren't a lot that I actually want to play anyway (last year was a banner year in that I actually bought four whole brand-new games, and I got one of them for half off anyway.)

I grew up in a similar environment, so this makes perfect sense to me. For a very long time, it was difficult for me to buy anything for myself (including necessities, like clothing) because I always felt like I was wasting money, and like I was just one frivolous purchase away from being broke and homeless.

So, you've got company. If you feel like you really wanna break out of this, though, the only way to do it is to force yourself to buy a game from time to time.

As long as you're enjoying yourself I don't see what it matters. It's your money, so spend it on what you want! (I think my parents always believed gaming was a silly, stupidly expensive hobby too, but they never really discouraged me. Now they don't seem to care... Guess they realize how enthusiastic I am about it. I wish everyone were so chill about this kind of thing.)

However, I know it can be difficult to shake this kind of thing.

I'm not going to scream at you for pirating, though. I've never pirated a game (they're too big, I don't know how it would work), but I can't say I've never downloaded a movie or show that I couldn't find elsewhere (or would have had to wait a long time to see otherwise).

So am I the only one who doesn't think being told video games are a wasteful luxury (depending on circumstances) is a bad thing? I do think its shitty that OP's parents taught them entertainment in general was a luxury, because I do see it as a necessity, but you adapt to the entertainment you can afford.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think OP himself/herself was judging them for it, only making a statement

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
When your parents have to choose between groceries and rent, entertainment is definitely a luxury. It's so not a necessity. Video games, CDs, things like class rings or going to prom, all of it was a luxury when my parents couldn't buy us winter coats .

No, I agree. I never had video games while I was growing up because my family couldn't afford them. We certainly weren't lacking for entertainment, nor did I feel deprived in any way.

Now that I'm an adult with an income and can afford them, I do enjoy playing them. But if I ended up in a tight financial situation, my console and games would be the first thing I sold off.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I don't play games, but I feel the same way about music I books. I feel really guilty when I spend money on things I want, so I only buy albums from bands I really really like and pirate the rest of the music. I have also quit buying books enterily (Because they're usually even more expensive than CDs, and since I rarely reread books I can get less hours of entertainment from a book than from a CD). I only read fic and books I can get through my uni's library.

When you grow up poor you end up with some fucked up ideas about money and the value of things, anon, I hear you-- I used never to buy music for that reason. Then, as I became an adult and got a job, I started getting my hair cut at a salon instead of doing it myself, and buying makeup, and every time it's like pulling teeth, I just hate the feeling of "wasting" money on something that isn't going directly to keeping me alive.

Try having to decide between being scolded by one parent for wasting money on a luxury (we're not poor, they're just from a stingy family), or scolded by the other if you pirate it instead.

And then having other people get offended because you haven't experienced a "classic" game/movie/album/etc.

That's some fun guilt right there.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
on a deeper level, i understand this feeling. i mostly download everything because of money. i read/watch LPS because of money. all my money, even now as an adult, goes to my bills and food because that's what's keeping me alive and the downloading makes it easier to consume.

however, i'm starting to finally enjoy spending money on things i want (anime figures, video games, trips, manga, dvds/blu-rays, etcetc) instead of just need and it's such an exhilarating feeling!

i really hope you get to that point, op. i know you can make it but for now, you gotta do what you gotta do. :( *offers hugs*

I think it's justified in the sense that you where pretty much guilt-tripped into thinking that spending money on videogames = waste of money.
