Like the Facebook memes that say "children with autism are precious delicate flowers." And then you see people with autism in the comments saying "seriously, just talk about us like we're people" and everyone tells them their opinions don't matter. WTF?

This. Or, they get super passionate but in the wrong way. This crazy chick would really appreciate it if self-admitted neurotypical people would stop telling her that she's "internalized ableism" because she uses the word crazy as a self-identifier. Or the word cripple. Or the word Aspie (yes, I've seen that get called out as "ableism"). It seems that if they do get passionate, they focus almost entirely on language (and often they seem to target PWD vs. people who are tossing around the R-word or such, which I cannot say how much that infuriates me), but they don't really bother with things that would be actually helpful -- like, you know, accessibility?

I am super confused by this secret. Firstly, because I cannot think of a single show or film where the main character is not fully abled (sorry if this is the wrong term, cannot think of what it should be right now). The fact that I can't certainly suggests that there's some fucked upness going on in Hollywood/TV land.

BUT, I always see fics in fandom exploring 'what if' AUs with characters where they have a disability (again, sorry if this is the wrong term). And Tumblr is pretty supportive of, well, most people.

I know that I am blinkered in this by my own privelege, but I really am struggling to see how fandom is ableist. Please explain it to me, OP? I would really like to understand.

You really really really don't see ableism daily in fandom, OP. You may "see" what the SJW hivemind has declared to be ableism, but you don't see REAL ableism "daily" in fandom, unless you are physically spending time with fans who call you names on a daily basis.

Context would be useful. Or are you one of those people who think people withouta disability should be regarded as 'temporary abled' because anything could happen? Therefore they should be constantly looking at everything in terms of disabilities they don't have yet.

People have such different views on what counts as ableism. Most new things I learn I understand 100% and do my best to respect people who have a different experience regarding physical and mental health.

But I'm still going to use words like stupid and idiot because let's face it, there's a fine line between being actually mentally challenged and straight-up refusing to use your head despite being able to.

As a disabled person myself, I'm honestly kind of baffled by this secret. What fandoms are you in, and what sort of ableism are you encountering? I can't say I've ever really run into any in my fandoms, even the one that has a canon disabled character.
