14: *facepalm*

Y'know what, normally I would argue about how the 'standard' of what people thought was beautiful shifted over the centuries, but I think that'd be wasted on you. Besides, I'm sure many other people have said it a lot better, including your teacher, and if they can't get it through your thick skull, then I won't even try.

21

[identity profile] squeakchan.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I know this is sort of off-topic to the secret, but there's a line in there I've heard before and it's always kinda confused me (and I really don't mean offense by this, I'm just curious).

I've seen a lot of people say that most canon het pairing don't have a good dynamic, and I just...guess I don't get that? I'm kinda a canon whore though so that could be why but... It just seems like a big generalization to me.

But I guess dynamic is subjective as anything else. Was just something I was wondering about (and probably phrased badly).

21. No offense taken - actually this is a very good question to ask. I think it really depends on the fandoms you run in, honestly. I am primarily a fan of anime/manga, in particular the action/adventure 'shounen' comics targeted at young guys. While there are obviously a great many exceptions, the trend I've seen in many series is for there to be a primary male protagonist who gains great power and/or goes off on great adventures. He will often have a female counterpart as his Intended, and the author will throw that idea out there...and then have the woman stay at home to care for the children/heal the wounded/Support Her Man Silently while the man goes off to have grand adventures with his male best friends. This is where a lot of slash fans, I think, start to diverge from the canon. If you have for example, a soldier off to war, living, breathing, and dying for his best friend -- that is a clear, up front example of some kind of devotion (sexual or not). To then say the main character will reunite and marry Childhood Female Friend A (seen for a few panels every couple hundred chapters), it rings false. Now, obviously this is true for pairings that aren't male/male too (I ship many noncanon het pairings for similar reasons) -- it's just that slash/yaoi fangirls are likely to have run into those who argue that m/m pairings appeal only on a visual level ('hawt buttsecks'), and be furious about that :)

Again - obviously there are many exceptions to this rule. In particular, I will just say that this secret was created in response to an "I HATE YAOI" secret in which the author claimed yaoi fangirls only shipped their pairings because they wanted pretty boy sex, and that if the female characters were only MEN we would like them more. I'd argue if certain authors just developed their canon pairings (m/f, m/m, or f/f) better, more people would like them in general :)

11. ever heard of a fanzine? conventions? clubs?

38. I don't know much about current widespread marvel canon, but in older comics, Skrulls regularly impersonated other people/animals/objects. And yes, sometimes it was a ~sneaky~ thing to do, but sometimes it was just about trying out a new shape. I don't see why gender would be any different, particularly given that Xavin hirself has said that s/he doesn't know who he "is." Calling hir "the guy he really is" is a pretty big oversimplification of the situation.

...too bad it's one the comic itself has been known to enforce XD;

38 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-01-31 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, people have said that, and it's made me think. I got the impression s/he knew who s/he was pre-Karolina, but I could be totally wrong.

And if not, probably transforming back and forth because one's fiancee won't be physically attracted to them otherwise probably wouldn't help one's identity issues. :[

Yeah, that baffles me too. @__@ I once even re-started the whole freaking game because everyone kept getting killed. Stupid Black Fang bigshots-that-are-related-to-Nino-whose-I-don't-remember. the fact that I had been messing around with codebreaker to get back the Manni Kanni and the rapier I broke, which resulted in me messing up my inventory wasn't much of a help either.

4: There's a difference between using pictures as references, and blatantly COPYING them. Artists use references all the time. And by references, I mean looking at a picture and using something from it, such as a pose, a smile, a face structure, etc. NOT DIRECTLY COPYING IT THOUGH :D Just wanted to make it clear to you! Don't stop drawing just because half of the shitty artists on DA like to copy things!

7: Shit, hear hear. My ex-friend was like that. ALL SHE DID WAS TALK ABOUT ANIME ALL THE FUCKING TIME! I like anime, yes I do. BUT IT ISN'T WHAT LIFE IS ALL ABOUT!!! There are other things in life than anime!!!

37: LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLL I DO THAT TOO BECAUSE MY PARENTS DON'T UNDERSTAND THE KIND OF J-POP I LISTEN TO XD

64: that picture will haunt my nightmares ;_______;

44; Um... I don't see too many paladins walking around. I do however see lawyers around frequently; and they have college degrees.

64; Oh my. And what's worse is people applaud that sort of thing.

(Anonymous) 2008-01-31 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but law does NOT work the same way irl as it does in Phoenix Wright, so it's as much pretend as Warcraft and Halo, in the end. It's just SLIGHTLY more realistic.

POINTLESS FACT.

The rival school in 'Dead Poets Society' was where I went to middle school. It was so freaky seeing it in a movie.

[identity profile] purple-kama.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
Well, pointless or not, you still win for the Nuku Nuku icon XD

Holy crap, I have a lot to comment on, today.

[identity profile] callmejude.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
9. Holy crap, me too! I can't get it out of my head, so I finally gave up trying to watch it. Johnny Quest > Blood+, anyway.

11. That's why I never whine about fandoms. I actually love when they're big, 'cause then there's all sorts of merchendise and it's easier to find fans in real life to fangirl with.

21. Ug, people SAY that? How childish. :/ I like my slash pairings because the characters are better. Making holes into poles won't help their character development any better.

31. I love most good vigilante characters. I was on Light's side until he went too far and killed all those cops so that he didn't get caught. That's not a moral thing to do. If you think it's right to murder cops, sorry, but you're the bad person.

32. Aw, I think it's kinda cute. It's Rufio! 'Member Hook?

48. LAWL. Me too. XD

53. Well, I liked him better than Near from the beginning of that arc, but it wasn't until he got burned that I actually started to fangirl him.

63. Who with Sims 2 DOESN'T do that? XD Seriously, you can make the most crack pairings a reality, all you need is an imagination (or a couple downloaded faces)!

[identity profile] lady-laguna.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
38. I totally agree with you... I can definitely sympathize with their dilemma... and it's an intriguing parallel. So many homosexuals have to masquerade as someone they're not to please lovers/friends/family members. I almost find it to be callous of Karolina to insist that Xavin make a change like that. Being a lesbian, I'm sure that she had to deal with discrimination and a struggle with her identity at least once in the past.

I've seen this issue discussed a lot in [livejournal.com profile] scans_daily, and it really does seem that he defaults to the male gender. When he transforms into "human" he often goes male before heading for female. Also, comments he's made in the past along the lines of "I don't know who I am" lead me to believe that genderswapping really is difficult for him at times.

They're both great characters and I think they'll definitely mature during this relationship; but I don't see it lasting! Karolina and Nico are definitely my OTP XD Though I love Victor, I just don't see him and Nico working out either...

4) No no, you're wrong. I'm pretty into this kind of things myself (being agaist art theft and all things like that), so I can assure you that taking reference is always highly encouraged as a start. Actually, doing it with photos would be better (simply because you can get a better grasp of RL anatomy like that), but it's not like anyone will kill you for taking it from another drawing.
However, you absolutley have to mention it whenever you take reference from something, and always state what was the reference you used if you make your work public and take praises for it. It's just fair. Also, taking reference is not the same as eyeballing or tracing, things that will get you to fanart hell in no time.

14) Then you don't love art as well, and I'm seriously wondering why you're taking art classes.

27) Isn't this a repet?

32) I feel like I'm the only one in the world who loves Zuko's voiceee (though I admit the italian voice he has is actually better than the original, but still...)

36) Same here, *cough*

44) OBJECTION! I'M A WONDERFUL LAWYER AND COULD VERY WELL APPEAR IN COURT JUST WITH MY PHOENIX WRIGHT EXPERIENCE!
I obviously look down on Halo and wow players because I'm an awesome lawyer.
Truthfully, I admit it's not like all Halo and Wow players are retarded (it would be retarded to think that), it's just that most of the ones I've met are n00bs, lamers and idiots.
And unfortunatly, I can't help but think you, OP, are not any better if you think people who play PW thinks they're smarter because they're pretending to be lawyers in situation that are completely fictional.

53) I know why, it's because before the scar thing and all he looks disturbingly similar to Little Lord Fauntleroy on drugs

... what?

No, seriously, I do not understand this at all. I-I don't like WoW or Halo, but that's because they're... not my kinds of games. They're completely different from PW. I don't know any WoW or Halo fans other than my brother so er, can't comment on that, but still.

Plus, I've never seen any talk about either of them in the PW fandom at all, much less that we're somehow "better" than their fans.

This entire secret is seriously escaping me.

In case you aren't a troll...

Look in the mirror, kiddo, and pray that you'll die soon because in ten years time you'll wish that you looked as skinny, beautiful and young as the woman in the painting. Age will fuck you over, beauty-wise.

In fifty years, your mangas will be all trashed, burned-up, fallen apart and forgotten and you'll be an old hag. But that painting will live on, looking as fresh and new as it does right now.
