Image: Two pictures of the video game character Rayne, from Bloodrayne. The left picture is labeled "Game 1" and the right is labeled "Game 2".

Text: I always preferred the first Bloodrayne game over the second, especially when it came to Rayne's outfit/design. It just looked so much clunkier and uglier with the "improved" graphics.

I feel like I got this backwards, somehow.

I wish I could motivate myself to stick around in fandoms long enough to get further into canons, write well-researched fic, and leave comments on fic or meta without feeling like I don’t have anything to add apart from "oooh, I liked it!" and how I found it IC or accurate without any insights on what IC or accurate mean.

Either I don’t love canon enough, so I leave that to the BNFs and active fans and slowly lose interest, or I do, but I’m too lazy and end up procrastinating, then hop to a different fandom and lose my swing.

When (if ) I get a place to myself, I most look forward to marathoning all the TV I never did
1. to avoid people seeing me watch this or that, and asking why I'm into it, or
2. because someone was watching something else and it would be impossible/hard to use the TV/tune out the sound/get decent internet speed.
Often while doing things like housework, of course.

I sometimes feel awkward at the back of my mind when I read fic or follow fandoms of things I watched with any family members.
(But nowhere near awkward enough to stop!)
None are fannish (afaik), but some like media that have famous fandoms (e.g., Trek). It’s not about those, we don’t have those in common. And I’m not big on smutfic, so it’s not to do with that.
I don’t care if it was with friends who aren’t fannish. Family is just different.

I really like that art.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
You were probably a kid. Most adults don't see how terrible of a person Mrs. Piggy is. Mostly because it is a kids show with creatures made out of felt.

I won't lie, the illusion of meaningful progress is one of the main reasons I play games.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I will admit, video games will make you feel like you are accomplishing something when you are really accomplishing nothing. But that's why they are both a great stress relief (I have trouble turning my brain off and video games generally can distract me enough to stop working) and are horribly, horribly addicting.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. Did you figure that out all by yourself? People play video games because they like being rewarded and because it gives them a concrete purpose? THIS IS GROUNDBREAKING INFORMATION! I hope video game companies don't figure this out! They might start designing games in a way so that small transactions can be used to buy virtual goods that can then be used to complete levels. And that would be terrible.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, it's true but not necessarily a bad thing. It's entertainment after all, it's not bad to feel good. Not that OP implied it was so, just agreeing with you

What TV show/movie/book do you think had the best portrayal of depression?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Add other mental/physical illnesses and disabilities if you want.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
someone's jimmies are amusingly rustled

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my god calm down.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of appearences aren't as they are in the books. Harry has blue eyes and his Mom has brown eyes. Hermione's hair isn't really that bushy. Ron isn't super tall and thin.

I didn't think his GoF hair was that bad.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It looks like they have pretty much the exact same hair, OP. Older!Harry just has some hair gel going on.

ayrt

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Did...did you not get the heavy sarcasm?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
=(

I need an adult.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, forgot to add in bold THIS IS OBVIOUS SARCASM AT THE FACT OP THINKS THIS IS SOME KIND OF PROFOUND SECRET!

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say most creative things are like that. TV shows, movies, and books all have resolutions. They're trying to say something. They're neat and clean when life is stupid and messy.

Yes, I know that some books aren't as cut and dry, but they still have better resolution than anything IRL.

do you not know what rustled jimmies are?

you were bothered enough by this OP's harmless observation to get all sarcastic and respond at length. that is what rustled jimmies are

Learning Spanish

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-09-30 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I want/need to start learning Spanish. I took a bunch in high school, but about the only thing I remember is conjucation.

The original plan was to take classes. But on-on-one tutoring is too expensive, and group classes around here require a certain amount of base knowledge.

So I'm going to buy some books/cds and try to learn on my own. But I'm not sure the best method.

One site recommended buying the three Barron's foreign language guide books as well as the Easy Spanish step-by-step workbook.

Is that the way to go? Rosetta stone is a bit out of my price range too.
