You can tell color but what about personality? Cat personalities and behavior can differ wildly. If accuracy to a character is important, you might be setting yourself up for disappointment.

No, not weird, but incredibly insensitive. You should get a cat from a shelter because that cat needs a home and a caretaker, not because you need something pretty in your home.

I'm wondering if you care about the cat's needs at all. Please consider your motives closely, and if your doing this for anything other than the cat's best, don't.

It is a stupid reason to choose a cat. believe me, I know. Our beautiful cat is a fucking asshole. But our plain one is a sweetheart.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude you could just straight up go and tell you hate cats, it'd be easier.

Well I don't think you're being cruel or anything, but personality is important, so if you find a cat with the perfect markings, do make sure their disposition is suited to you too.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's weird to choose a cat based on what markings it has but a lot of people do. I guess it's ok as long as you go with a shelter cat, it's one less cat in a shelter and one more in a (hopefully) loving forever home.

People want only orange cats, or only female cats, or only this or only that, for tons of reasons. This is nothing particularly weird.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I hope you find your perfect cat and that you two are a match for each other inside and out. I won't tell you not to adopt because no matter what your motivations, you'll be saving a life.

On the subject of choosing pets by their color, I personally don't have a problem with it especially when what you're looking for is an animal with a darker color. Poor babies have much lower chances of being adopted because people are superstitious. And there are personal preferences that are valid. I have an indoor-outdoor situation and have never gotten a kitten (who presumably could be trained to take a bath), so it would be better for me not to have a mostly white cat like my sister's indoor one.

There are some colors that actually do match personality. I don't think I'd willfully ever get a marmalade striped cat after my sister's boyfriend's cat attacked me (we were both being assholes). I've heard that coloring tends to come with a high-strung personality. In contrast, I've met a lot of black cats that are absolute sweethearts and kind of silly in an uncat-like manner. I have never had an aloof black cat.

People who pick out animals soley because they match their color schemes bug me. Animals are dying for lack of homes out there, and you're holding out over aesthetics.

Not only are you weird, this behaviour is disgusting.

Giving pets fandom names is perfectly fine, but choosing a living being that will be your responsibility for several years on a choice as superficial as this is laughable. People like you are the reason animal shelters are overflowing with pets no one wants anymore after the first rush of excitement has worn off in the first place.

Please tell me you're just a troll, trolling hard.

Thing is, the cat will be your companion for a long time (5+ years, depending), and so it's important you have the right vibes with him or her. So if the coloring of your cat helps those vibes along, I can't exactly fault you, OP, heh.

I'm not going to join the dump-on-OP brigade here but I will say make sure you're picking the right cat.

I think you should reconsider if you want a cat or a fandom accessory.

I can kind of relate. I've got a name that I'd really like to give a female cat, but I'm saving it until I can find a silver spotted cat.

In the meantime, though, I've adopted a tuxedo cat, gave her a different name, and I'm just as happy with her. (She's sitting on my lap right now.)

Do you have to name your cat after this fandom character right this instant? If you really want a cat, just get a cat you seem to click with. There's not really a shelf-life on name usage, after all.

I mean, I have cats. I'm not allowed to adopt more. I couldn't take care of more. But it's really hard leaving without at least one (often more) of the cats I see at the shelter.

Cats can be beautiful, but be sure you pick on personality or you'll end up sending it back anyway (and that's cruel to the animal).

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
You might find yourself relaxing your standards a bit as you go along if you really want a cat.

I once had a cat called Shadowfax and she was black and white and female instead of grey and male. I liked the name and I loved the kitty, and I didn't care who thought it was stupid that the name didn't "match" her.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting a cat that aesthetically pleases you, cats are pretty and I sure understand the feeling of "I'd love to have one with these kinds of colors."

I'd just ask you to please consider your choice based on the cat's personality. Pets can have very differing personalities as much as humans do, and you'd probably find yourself better off with a pet that has a personality you click with since, you know, you'd technically be "stuck" with them until they die.
(Unless you'd bring them back to the shelter, but please don't. That's a very terrible thing to do.)

I think that is not the wisest way of going about selecting a cat, but frankly it's up to you if that's the way you want to go.

Myself, I would get a cat based on personality, then pick out a fandom name I feel fits their colouring.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It's definitely weird, but if you're saving a cat from a shelter, I suppose it's all good in the end.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Make sure you have the resources to take care of whatever animal you bring home and treat them like a cat, not an accessory. Besides that, I really don't care about your reasoning. Just be a good home.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-07 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Go for personality over the looks. Sorry, but what if you find the cat with the ~perfect markings~ but it's a destructive ball of rage and teeth?

I disagree with this concept. I can't wait to have a cat. My first cat will be named Mairon regardless of gender and look.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-07 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
It is not uncommon that people rename their cats after they have gotten to know them. Fluffy becomes Spikey, Missy becomes Orlando, Spunky becomes Loafy etc.

As any cat owner can attest:
The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey—
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter—
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum-
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover—
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.
