Is someone bitter that all the art was ugly back then? :[

Re: 5

[identity profile] flyingmhe.livejournal.com 2008-03-13 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Not the OP, but as much as I might love a few of those older series, newer ones tend to have such prettier art.

Yeah, I have (that's why this is a secret). I don't dislike it at all, and I don't know why I can't finish it, I just haven't been able to since that first time.

Iawtc.

I've avoided the Sweeney Todd fandom because I can smell the drama from a mile away. But I really did love the movie because of moments like 49 described. Emotions were just high through the whole thing and I loved every minute of it.

Gonna do it in reverse order!

62- Er... I could be reading the pictures wrong, but Al/Hal and Graham/Billy aren't actually 'obscure' pairings, if that's what you were worried about.

I'd say go for it. If people get pissed at you for the pairings or whatever, ignore them. If you want to write it, go damn well ahead!

46- Are you talking about the stuff like "omg no gurls on intarweb, TITS OR GTFO, gb2/kitchen/" or something else? Because if yeah, I... I wouldn't say it's just the gaming community per se (though there is a tremendous amount of overlap). I dunno, in most of the local gaming circles I know of--if not really frequent--there's a good amount of girl gamers who get along just fine. What in specific are you referring to, out of curiosity?

45- It's an interesting question. I don't feel entirely comfortable writing dynamics from a female point of view (particularly femslash), and I've always wondered if women who wrote guy-on-guy felt the same way.

I was going to say something else but I can't quite remember what it was.

39- One of my friends got me to marathon Gunnerkrigg Court and I actually had to ask her if those two weren't intended to be a couple. *shrug* Their relationships is... twisted, but oddly adorable.

33- Aw. I've always loved it, but hey, to each their own. I do think Maggey gets an unfair rap amongst the fandom, TBQH.

22- Er. That's... kind of... not what happens...? There's plenty I don't like about what DOES happen, but it's not like he just decides to up and quit because "hey, I don't like law any more." So if that's what you're worried about (since it looks like you haven't played te game) then don't worry.

Question--what's a 'tuque'? Never heard that word before.

11- That sucks. I'm sorry that happened :(

(Anonymous) 2008-03-13 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm assuming you're not a girl here, so forgive me if I'm wrong, but...
A lot of the time, guys in gaming groups don't notice the casual sexism because it's just that: casual. Sometimes subtle. Mostly always cushioned in the "acceptable" things to say. Sometimes the sexism comes in little looks or off-hand comments that just pile up, and if you're not the constant targets of those things, you aren't going to notice.

There's also the attituide I hate in gaming groups when the guys do accept the female gamers... but then just think of them as the exception, and not the rule. And that's really just a back-handed compliment.

62 OP

31

[identity profile] sky-dark.livejournal.com 2008-03-13 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Like every ship everywhere, everyone sees the dynamic differently. I happen to agree, in my mind I can justify the existence of a relationship between the two. When I was first into the fandom I admit the shota factor that could be implied made me shy away, but after reading many, many fine fics, all with different scenarios, I was able to see what other writers had seen. I think fic is more of an advocate than canon; but I can see it there, too. You're right, they prop each other up, and relationships have been built on less.

I can never shake the feeling that no matter how many not-RPG games that I play, I'll never be a real gamer - and I really can't shake the fact that the only reason my gamer friends look down on me for it is because I'm a girl. If I were a guy I'd just be an RPG nerd, but because I'm a girl I'm a 'girl gamer'.

I constantly have my opinions and comments shot down because I 'only play RPGs' (and this translates into 90% of gamers minds as 'only plays Final Fantasy' - and I'm not even going to get into the kind of bullshit PC gamer elitism that goes on with western RPG fans vs. JRPG fans, oh lord I will never date another PC gamer ever again) - which is total bullshit, and I go out of my way to say 'oh look Devil May Cry Bully Bioshock Guitar Hero Soul Calibur' whatever, but because I'm first and foremost an RPG fan, I've played more of them than anyone I know IRL and love them to bits, I can't help feeling that I'm just living up to the stereotype.

How many non-RPG games do I have to play to be a 'real gamer'?! GAH.

Re: 46
