49. Well I don't get why everyone loves L. Different strokes for different folks, as they say.

59. Eh. It's a matter of opinion, but I loved R:2 in comparison to R:1.

I've been shipping these two for a while, and blogging about them (along with other possible uy yuri) for a while. I love them. <3 Friend me?? :)

36. I'm confused. Are you talking about shipping Claudia and Ben, while having a respect for Vala/Daniel and John/Aeryn, or just about shipping Ben/Claudia. Because I see some Michael Shanks in there. D:

45. Giles was the sex symbol of Buffy.

77. I personally like Enterprise the least, but good on you for supporting it. I get the same negative reaction whenever I tell people I liked Voyager the best.

I love Voyager like woah, although I'm not blind to its faults. I tend to focus on the earlier seasons for that reason. :)

I think a lot of people simply liked the way she grew up and changed her outlook on life. I mean, now it feels like she's fighting for herself and her friends and village instead of a childish crush. Her goals at twelve seemed wholly selfish, while her matured emotions are much more stable and strong.

Her friendship and strong bonds with Naruto and Sasuke took form during those early years though, so I don't think it's right to see her as a completely different character after the time skip.

I really like Sakura. A female character in a shônen manga who goes through actual trials and character development is not very common, after all.

1. Every person who hides their true self for fear of ridicule contributes to the need for others to hide their true selves. No one should be afraid to be honest about themselves.
61. Glad to know you didn't dislike them...
66. I don't get where people get this idea of "their" happy ending. It would have been her happy ending if they stayed together (and, you know, alive), but his happy ending would have been if he had found out Lucy was alive, maybe had his love overcome his grief and revenge-lust, and decided to take Lucy and Johanna away to live the best life they could. Maybe that's a naive idea, but I think Sweeney/Lovett is even more so.

Fear and hiding are symptoms, not the problem.

1. That's really sad. You shouldn't feel the need to hide your faith to fit in with fandom. And I hate to say it, but part of faith is not being ashamed of it. You can be ashamed of what other people who claim to share you faith do in its name, but people are people, and they're gonna be fallible. But your faith itself...you shouldn't have to feel ashamed of that.

46. FTW. There is nothing more to say.

77. Not a fan of Enterprises theme song, but I'm a fan of what it tried to do (good idea in theory, poor execution). But it always bugs me when people compare new series to old and say "Man, at least the new one has good effects/costuming/make-up!" Half the time, I think that's where the old series triumph, because they had to rely on writing and actors' chemistry. William Shatner's hardly the best actor in the world, but he, Spock, and McCoy had fantastic chemistry, as did the rest of the cast. But more than that, it was the writing. Modern Star Treks are sci-fi, pretty straight up. TOS was groundbreaking. It was allegorical. It was inspiring. It wound up being so much more than the sum of its parts, and that's where the other Star Treks (IMHO) fall short. They're still good. But they don't have that something.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-03-13 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. It's sad and terrible that the OP feels the need to hide it, but it's also against his/her faith to do so in the first place. Double-suck.

1) I, uh...sigh. I know it's tough being Christian in fandom sometimes, but I can't help but look at my friends and think that it can't be as tough as some people moan about it being, because I'm pretty sure they'd all accept me just fine if I were Christian instead of Jewish.

I'm sorry, though. I hope you find a place in fandom where you can be yourself.

2) Things like this are why I fandom-label all my icons. Especially the obscure ones. *USING WIRE ICON*

46) not secret whut

56) repeat whut

66) Secrets like this about Sweeney Todd scare me. I just can't see it that way. Not that there's anything wrong with having a tiny wish for a happy ending even if the characters don't deserve it, I just...can't see Sweeney Todd that way.

67) Sry but the unrealistic sparkly happy love love? Is why I liked the series and I will happily admit it ♥

23- I saw Utena just last year. I don't think it's the best thing ever, but I can so see why people fall deeply in love with it. It IS amazing.
I'd recommend Princess Tutu to you. It's kind of similar in some ways.

33- I'd probably watch it just for the FUCKING AWESOME LULZ.

42- I like Spongebob for his enthusiasm and optimism, but I still root for Plankton EVERY TIME.

77- What was the song in the theme? I remember it was made of amazing amounts of win. Ahhh, Enterprise. I liked it too!

[identity profile] hologrphcbuddha.livejournal.com 2008-03-13 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
1. I'm in mostly sci-fi and fantasy fandoms, where it seems a lot fans are pagan or atheist, and not many people are all Christianity yay! However, I'm not ashamed of my faith, nor am I one of those fundies who feels the need to preach at anyone about it, either. I rarely even talk about it at all, unless religion is specifically brought up (e.g. if we're talking about fantasy religions or something). I don't see why you'd feel the need to hide your faith unless you're too insecure to stand by your beliefs, or you somehow think you'll lose fandom "street cred" if you admit to it (which I hope isn't the case, b/c that is hella lame).

45. I totally agree, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. :)

77. Is that really the only reason you like it best? The SFX and the theme? Man, and I thought I was shallow...

IDK, the cheesy SFX and aliens on ToS are part of its charm, IMO. :p I felt the writing on Enterprise was by far the weakest of the Trek spinoffs, so I could never get into it. But to each their own, I guess. TNG FTW.

72

[identity profile] kyriesanctus.livejournal.com 2008-03-13 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
72. Awesome. I hate when people think they're better at games than I am because they print out the FAQ walkthroughs or follow the guide step-by-step. If I'm in a bind, I'll look at a walkthrough or a guide, but I like to figure things out for myself. For instance, I have the guide for Mass Effect.. I just beat it last night. The only time I actually opened the guide? To use the planet guides to see which planets have heavy metals on them so I could get on with the game and still finish my collections.

It's not that I hate people who use the guide obsessively, just the people who think they're the shit when all they did was read a guide and push some buttons. Yippee! You did what a 5 year old can do. How about you actually play the game next time?

35. That's insanely gross.

71. I like both Mello and Near. Near to a much larger extent because his evil is so much more subtle, but I do like them both. I'm pretty sure the fandom hate for Near, much like the insane amount of love for MattMello, came from a few BNFs who knew how to push their weight around. I'm not saying you can't like MattMello or have to love Near. It's understandable that this happens, though. If the people who write/draw the best write/draw MattMello, more people are going to love that pairing due to those fics/art. If the funniest people make a bunch of jokes about Near, they're going to have a lot more people laughing about how dumb Near is. Just sayin'.

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2008-03-13 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I'm vaguely curious. Where is all the politics fic happening?

44. Dude, same here. I was also drawing yuri before I even knew what it was. You're not alone, no?

60. ...eh, you're probably imagining it. If you have enough faith in your RP-ing skills you shouldn't be worrying too much.

[identity profile] phoenix-melody.livejournal.com 2008-03-13 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
#1 I'm sorry you feel that way. I grew up in an area where my religious denomination was in the minority, and I can only think of a handful of times where I ever felt attacked. Fandom's never really been an issue for me, nor have I ever felt particularly attacked. Unless you count a comment on an anon meme where somebody said, "I worry that your religion holds you back from your true potential."

I'm deeply religious, but that doesn't mean I shove it down people's throats. I don't bring it up unless it's relevant to a particular topic. I figure the entirety of my f-list knows, and none of them seem to care enough to get (identifiably) vocal about it. My religion has shaped who I am, and hiding it would be denying something fundamental about me.

71

(Anonymous) 2008-03-13 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Gotta be honest, I don't like Near because he is a little wannabe L. Like he was created for the goddamn part of a little wannabe L. L isn't even my favourite character(Mello is, ohgod xD), but I just don't like him because they(as in Obata and Ohba) tried to pass him off as the new L. And he honestly isn't as good a detective to me D: I mean, he never would have gotten there or caught Kira if L hadn't done everything he had before he died. Not to mention he doesn't seem as daring, cunning, and quirky as L. Yeah, he plays with toys and makes epic dice castles, but it doesn't make up for the fact that he's like... he's like the mary-sue self-insert that a 12 year old fangirl makes. He is almost identical to a prominent character from the series and manages to do anything he wants without any setbacks or problems, of which all the other characters seemed to have. Not to mention he relied so heavily on the rest of the SPK, something L would not have done.

I guess it's just when it comes down to it, L > Near(+ Mello, too) any day.

Re: 71

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-03-14 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Why do people believe that L did everything for Near? Near had to start from scratch. Remember L deleting all his files pertaining to the Kira case when he died? So no, Near didn't ride on L's coat tails when it came to capture Kira. Plus it wasn't that insanely hard to find some clue to start with the rampant media coverage of Kira.

Also, Ohba was trying to say that Near was based on one area on L's personality which doomed him from being a heir to L's name because he lacked what L had. And LOL, Near's no Mary-Sue, he was disliked by Light and the Japanese Task Force, even the SPK members weren't too sure of him either. He was ruthless, condescending and childish. That's not what a Mary Sue make.

Not as daring as L? Do you even remember why L lost? L HESITATED. Near risked making mistakes and Light actually outsmarted him until the very, very end. And he only won because he had Mello's help and Near admits that without it, he would've been dead.

You can hate Near all you want but at least get you facts straight about him.
