04. Are those the Coreys? Oh man, they have (had?) this show I watched one episode just for the lulz and it was pretty slashy.

16. Whether or not fandom is actually a female/feminist space, I don't think I've met anyone who minds a man in such a space as long as he's respectful, which, from the secret, you are. It's when men start trying to take over that space completely that it becomes a problem. So as long as you're not expecting anyone to accommodate you specifically just because you're male, from your secret, I think you're fine. :)

36. I think all the complaining about translators are a bunch of...well, bull. x.x;; Half the time those complaining don't even KNOW Japanese. How do they know one translation is better than the other?? (I mean, of course, besides obvious alterations like the stupid stuff 4Kids does. that's different.)

51. Well, I guess when one of the things you can do is gossip with the neighbors...

64. WINSPIRATION! I like that word XD

65. I read the manga, I still think he's a psycho. He's attractive, and as good!nonKira!Light I totally fangirl over him...but he's still a psycho.

71. ..Yeah, secretly I'm kina hoping one day I'll see an icon of mine in f!S, too. (...Erm, not-so-secretly now, but I'm too lazy to make a secret for it.)

72. ...Mmmkay, you can feel that way. I've done that sort of RPing, too, but I still like the LJ RPing. Sure, logs take more effort, but hey, comment-logging is still fun.

36 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-03-15 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
That's always baffled me too. I honestly think that most of the time, they assume that whatever the fansub/scanslation says is correct, just because it came first and they had time to get used to it before seeing the official translation. It doesn't even seem to occur to some people that the fan translator could have made a mistake, or just had a different take on a given line -- sometimes you can get a number of very different translations out of the same line, none of which are necessarily wrong.

(And yeah, I don't think anyone's going to argue re: 4Kids going too far with the alterations. There's a difference between Woolseyism and Macekre, as tvtropes.org puts it.)

16 -- How is reading it a problem? Fanfiction writers like having an audience. The location of your reproductive organs is irrelevant to that, unless you think your ownership of such an organ makes you more important than the rest of us.

36 -- People suck, but don't let them discourage you from a career you'd enjoy.

48 -- Word. I was surprised to discover that phenom myself. Max/Logan FTW.

67 -- Sensible people are rarely loud. I think the cause, in this specific case, is the novelty of canon slash, and this sudden unexpected terror that it'll be taken away. Some people seem to be handling that badly.

72. Hi. I play both LJ multifandom games and the game you used in your picture - the latter obsessively. My record for DnD? Six games at once. One of which I DM'd. I spend class time thinking up builds.

And yeah, some of multi-fandom is self-congratulatory fan-wankery masturbation.

But you know what else?

Multifandom games have some of the deepest, most complex plot, characterization, and actual roleplaying I've ever seen... while most dice-based IRL games I'm in are generally DBZ explosion-fests. Even when I'm playing with my more roleplay-minded friends, the level of plottage and character development NEVER gets to the level I've seen it taken to in some multifandom games. This is partly the fault of the whole "roll-playing" vs "role-playing" issue - and note that I'm the last person to accuse optimizers of not role-playing - heck, I build truly ridiculous wank-tastic builds ALL THE TIME (My 'kreen 2 / barbarian 1 / fighter 2 / dervish 7, let me show you it) and yet I still try my best to stay in-character and to ROLEPLAY. Furthermore, in multi-fandom, the players have a lot more control over the plot, whilst in most DnD games I've found... you have some control, but it's mostly your DM.

And before you tell me that it's my DM, note that I've had seven different DMs in my lifetime and have, myself, DM'd. All of them have VERY different ways of running games... and even so, the DM has more control over the plot than we ever do. Whilst in multi-fandom games, I have before single-handedly altered the plot to be something entirely different from what the GMs intended. I've NEVER done that in a DnD game, despite my best efforts (I HAVE done it in a White Wolf game. Kinda. And then failed. Miserably. but most White Wolf games are even more mastubatory angst than multifandom games. "whine whine I'm a furry whine whine!")

AND LASTLY, I know so many people who never RP in multifandom games on LJ... and yet will continue to try to emulate XYZ character in DnD as best as they possibly can (I've seen Batman, Pit, Demyx, Six [from new!BSG], Naruto [there is an ENTIRE THREAD on the Dungeons and Dragons boards devoted to "how to make a Naruto character in DnD using only Psionics.", Daniel Jackson... list goes on) So in its own way? Dice-based games can be multifandom, too.

TL;DR - Multifandom stuff has plenty of value and characterization so stfu.

I COULD SORT OF TRY DEFENDING HIM FOR YOU? Except, you know, not... really, because he's still a doucheface in the manga. D| I mean, the way he treats Misa-- sdalkjglfkjlsdf. Have to agree with you on some bits about the anime, though. Totally melodramatic and ridiculous in places. I think it's well-done in others, but but yeah. Definitely prefer the manga. ♥

... Er, but yeah. Light = douche, but that's part of why he's so interesting? ... I DON'T KNOW, I have a love/hate type of thing going on there. Not a relationship, obviously, since he's imaginary, but a sort of OPINION type thing. God, English language, why must you fail so much?

And warning in advance: if you ask me to explain what the hell I meant in that largely disjointed RAMBLING seen above, we'll be here forever. TL;DR is my friend.

45. ....I feel like that might be intended for me, maybe?

65. This is why I'm an original format Nazi. I read manga when it came out first (DN, Kenshin) and watch anime when it's the source (Utena, Cowboy Bebop). Things are always, always changed.

72. So what kind of RPing talent do you value? It might not meet your standards, but we have a lot of fun doing it.

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2008-03-16 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
If I do recall correctly, the Utena anime and manga were written simultaneously. The reason the manga was so different is because Chiho Saito had a bigger hand on it, while Kunihiko Ikuhara was more influental in the anime.

50 - I refuse to touch anything by CLAMP. I hate the art style and there's no way I could bring myself to read more than a chapter or two. Plus, from what I've heard of them, I wouldn't enjoy them anyways, art aside. DX

65 - Agreed. While I appreciate Rem and Misa being more lesbian-tastic in the anime, it's difficult for me to watch most of it without thinking "what the hell is this shit?"I try not to be a manga elitist...but the anime was really not that great. I tried to watch it for the art, but Death Note is a victim of Quality Fucking Animation, so...yeah. That went out the door. It's just...I like the manga better. DX The anime fucked up Light.

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2008-03-16 03:07 am (UTC)(link)

53 and 66, the day of 'get over yourself'

[identity profile] bergeronprocess.livejournal.com 2008-03-15 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
53. Not one of you 'I think less of people' assholes. God, I'm so sick of these people, but now that there's been an anti-Whovian one, I need to strike. Get over yourself. Not everyone can like what you like. Find something else to like about your friends--though you might lose them by thinking less of them in the way you do because nobody wants to be judged by some holier-than-thou asshole. By the way, I like Doctor Who in spite of the occasionally cheesy CGI and all of that because I think it really does have the more epic elements.

Though I'm sure you probably think less of me now for that, I care not.

66. And what do you do? Worship at the altar of one carefully-chosen picture that drapes your favorite person in a black silk sheet so you can't see them (OMG THEIR NOSE!! I CAN'T LOOK AT THE NOSE IT'S OBJECTIFICATION)? I'm proud to do picspams--hell, I'm known for them. I'm proud to show my friends gorgeous pictures of a gorgeous person. What else are pictures for? They're for sharing, and discussing, and admiring, and enjoying. Get over yourself.

not!secret ...what: This was hilarious. Thanks for making me laugh on a day where I kept worrying about tornado warnings and such.

35. I once did that too 'w'

40. I think so too.

50. I just think that CLAMP's kind of overrated. I mean, after X was put on haitus, it just kind of went downhill. XXXholic was kind of cool, and TRC's characters got awesome, it's just that the recycled motifs are getting old to me.
