So there is a used bookstore around here, with a lot of biographies. They are sorted by occupation, kind of. Politicians, military people, artists, designers, musicians, writers, activists, etc.

This system might be one of the better ways to deal with lots of biographies, but it still seems inadequate. Where would you look for a biography of someone who never really did anything?

Today I came across a guy who says that he is asexual and aromantic. He has a long-term live-in romantic partner that he finds sexually attractive and enjoys having sex with. Also their relationship is open because he continues to be sexually attracted to other people and enjoys being able to act on that attraction.

WHY

WHY DO PEOPLE FEEL THE NEED TO LABEL THEMSELVES THINGS THAT COMPLETELY CONTRADICT THEIR DESIRES AND BEHAVIORS

"I'm a lesbian! Sure, I don't find women sexually attractive at all, and I never ever want to sleep with a woman, and I never ever want to date a woman. BUT I'M A LESBIAN BECAUSE I REALLY WANT TO CALL MYSELF ONE."

How does this not water down identity and make it harder for people to be taken seriously? Okay sure, you're in charge of how you define yourself, I get that, but if you don't like categories and think they're bullshit then how about you just stop using them instead of taking existing categories and denaturing them to the point where you're basically making a mockery of the people who appreciate them and fit into them. FFS there's a difference between maliciously policing identity and declaring that words have agreed-upon definitions and that in order to communicate we can't just toss them all out the window at whim and without warning.

But you know I'm pretty damn sure "asexual" means one or both of two things: 1) lack of desire for sex, 2) absence of sexual attraction. Am I wrong? I know there are some ace people here. Have I somehow gotten it completely wrong? Can you be sexually attracted to people, and get turned on by them, and have a high libido, and still be asexual? Is that possible?

Can you be aromantic but still want a romantic partner?

Is this legit a thing?

So afraid I'll get a lot of shit for this but please hear me out before you yell. I am not trolling, this is a legitimate post.

I see a lot of self diagnosed autistic people on Tumblr who seem very fake and it bothers me a lot. Does anyone else question the validity of people's autism even if you never say anything about it to avoid getting hate?

I understand everybody presents it differently and there is no such thing as 'looking' autistic, but I feel like a lot of people there self diagnose because it's trendy.

I see this with mental illness too. Borderline personality disorder looks like the current favorite. I can't help questioning the validity of people who have long lists of mental illnesses in their descriptions.

What makes autism and mental illness so popular?

How come I don't see something like Tourette's in the lists outside of people who post in the Tourette's tags?

I feel like a bad person for questioning at all.

I have been on vacation since 9/23, and tomorrow is my first day back, so I decided to check my email tonight to see what I had missed. Welp, I just learned my "work brother" got a new job and his last day with us is Friday, and I feel gutted.
