What conspiracy theories do you find intriguing or even believe? Have you created your own conspiracy theories?

Years ago, I wrote about Hulu on LJ; way back when Hulu first started, it was free for everyone. Then they had limits on what episodes of a show aired. Then they had it so you could pay to watch more than five, until eventually you could only really buy shows to watch. I said it was probably a copyright thing (more companies started asking for their share), but a friend pointed out that actually, they might have done it that way on purpose - get people to really like it, then gradually force them to pay for more.

I find that intriguing, and certainly very possible. (Personally, I think it was more likely a combination of companies wanting their share and Hulu being stealthy about it.)

I DO think Facebook very intentionally became the way it did, though. It adds features no one likes knowing no one's going to leave because they're dependent on it in many cases.

Well, the government is always listening in is no longer a conspiracy but before that was a favorite.

I've always liked the one that selfies were made popular by government to create a database of people for facial recognition. That is part of what Facebook is for.

And my favorite batshit ones are the hollow moon and hollow Earth conspiracy theories.

the Kennedy assassination was likely to have been the result of some kind of broader plot involving some combination of government security agencies, organized crime, and conservative anti-Communists

we'll never really know for sure though

I've given up. All the fun ones are busted now thanks to the internet and google earth, and all the creepy sinister ones about the government and the rich spying and controlling us came true. I literally would not be surprised if the next wikileaks revealed the government was lojacking us in our sleep and I would be even less surprised when the majority of the population either shrugged and said okay or got angry and started screaming at anyone who objected because lojacking us would be good for law and order.

That is how jaded I am right now. We've culturally conditioned an entire generation to accept being treated like livestock by throwing a few of the mob some bones and convincing the rest that it is their patriotic duty to submit. It sucks.

I think Facebook and Google are purposely squashing any type of alternate social media in an attempt to control the internet and populace. That's why you don't see many start ups or creative new endeavors anymore. Back in the day there was a new website or type or site every few years, it seemed, but there's been nothing really new in years and years. Blame Zuckerberg.

Has anyone read these books? From what I read, they originally started out as LOTR fanfic before the LOTR stuff got filed off and original settings got added and they got published? the summary sounds intriguing, and I kind of want to give them a try. Has anyone read them? Are they any good?

Yes, let's! It counts if I've been reading academic books for pleasure, right? I started out reading some simple stuff about the linguistic history of the English language, but it didn't occur to me until recently to combine my newfound love with an old love, child psychology. I started Ray Cattell's 'Children's Language: Consensus and Controversy' on Thursday and I'm almost done with it, it's such a fascinating subject!

Also props to 'Accidence Will Happen: The Non-Pedantic Guide to English' (not an academic book) for inspiring me to think about how children acquire language in the first place. That's not what the book is about, but it's still really good! A bit too harsh on grammar nazis, but grammar nazis are so often full of shit that I can forgive it tbh.

A Darker Shade of Magic

For anyone looking for a good fantasy series, I highly recommend V. E. Schwab's "A Darker Shade of Magic" and the sequels, "A Gathering of Shadows" and "A Conjuring of Light."

I don't think I've ever been that satisfied by an ending. The whole trilogy was so great and I will constantly be recommending it to anyone. It has a little bit of everything (magic, action, adventure, little romance on the side, well-developed characters)

Someone recommended the Flavia de Luce books to me, but I'm having a super hard time getting into the first one because I'm not digging the main character. Has anyone read these, and does she ever get any less... like a child roleplaying BBC Sherlock?

In an attempt to read more, I recently bought a Kindle paperwhite (because a lot of the books I want to read are e-book only, plus it's just easier having an e-reader around than carrying around books - although I still buy dead tree!). I've since started and finished a book since buying it so I think it's definitely going to help with reading more. :3

So now I'm looking for more books to read! I really like queer romance paired with young adult, fantasy, and horror. If anyone has any recs, I'm all ears!

Dear Fanfic Author, making all the boys super yay sex yay yaoiz and both female characters extremely sex-repulsed asexual doesn't make me think you're inclusive or whatever. I think you just need to unpack some serious baggage about female sexuality.

Dear favorite author, I love your fics and I hate them at the same time. I completely disagree with every single bit of your interpretation of almost all the characters. I think you've got everything completely wrong. And yet I love your writing style and some of the ways you write this particular fictional world, so I keep coming back to your stuff. But still, I think your canon interpretations are very wrong in a lot of ways, and in several cases I'm honestly not even sure where you came to your interpretation because it is so antithetical to what I see in canon. But I still love your writing style so I still stick around.

Is it strange that I am female bodied but find fit masculine bodies more motivational for getting in shape than I do fit feminine bodies?

Like, I look at in-shape dudes and think "fuck yeah" and get hella motivated to work out. But I see in-shape ladies and just...general appreciation and think they're awesome, but zero effect on motivation.

I've always been this way and didn't really think anything of it until someone recently pointed it out. Now I'm constantly thinking about it and wondering if it really is weird or if that person was just being a pain.

You ever bid on something on ebay, but not really want to win? Yeah, I put in a minimum bid only on ebay for a toad lily and I was expecting to get outbid and just really bidding to indulge my need for a little retail therapy and being part of the process. Nobody else came along and outbid me though. I was wanting someone else to too. Darn it. Oh well, toad lilies look kinda cool and I think I know just the place for it.
