132. Ew, is that William Faulkner? I did a project on As I Lay Dying recently and absolutely hated the lot of it. >:|

144. I often wonder about that myself, for a great many fandoms. It's strange when it's not mentioned (like two characters locked up together for days and no mention of anyone having to use the toilet) but kind of awkward when it is. Still, I do wonder.

156. You be what you've got to be, sunshine. If you think you would have come to the same conclusion without fandom's influence, or if you would be unhappy if that choice was taken away from you, I'd say go for it, but it's certainly not my place. We're with you! :D

172. We're in the same boat. I'm ashamed to admit it sometimes, but I really do use a walkthrough on almost any game I play. Sometimes it's really awful (printing out and pausing the game every three seconds to read what you should do next syndrome) but sometimes it's just for silly things like "What ingredients do I need for the Ultima Weapon and where do I find them?" Especially with Zelda games, I find I have no patience. I don't have fun when I'm wandering around for hours wondering what to do. It's really not about how hxc!!!!1! you are, but if you're having fun. *shrug*

From an entirely literary point of view, you should really give Faulkner a second chance. As I Lay Dying is often that one book taught in high school that sets everyone off of Faulkner. I'd had it (poorly) in 10th grade English, but now I'm just finishing up a semester with a course just in Faulkner, and it blew my mind. After I started to understand The Sound and the Fury, and especially after I survived Absalom, Absalom!, fitting things together became incredibly interesting, both within the story and within the context of writers like Fitzgerald and Hawthorne. I don't think saying that will help my point much, but because that class and author were so amazing, they're making me reconsider my major!

Seriously, seek it out in college. Missing out on his work after a bad experience in high school would suck!

I want to see him win so so much.

At the same time, the fact that he hasn't completed the course is part of why he's so inspiring. I know that I couldn't keep coming back again and again if I never made it through the final stage.

But, really, whether he ever completes the course or never makes it past the first stage again, he's pretty much my hero forever.

What, it's about Jesus? It used to be my second favourite Franz Ferdinand song ("Drink to the Devil and death to the Doctors!" (Except Nine, Five and Seven, I did like them.)) but now I can't like it anymore because I'm such a radical atheist D:

I never really paid that much attention to the lyrics, so I don't think I ever realised that. (That's what you get when English isn't your first language?) I did think it had a few undertones, but I never thought it was entirely about Jesus.

Please someone tell me "This Boy" isn't actually about Jesus too. Or "Michael". ("Michael, you're dancing like a beautiful dancewhore.") That'd break my heart.

Re: 152

[identity profile] justbolognese.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
I had no idea it was about Jesus either. I'm a radical atheist too and I actually paid attention to the lyrics but never thought it could be about Christianity. I guess I'll have to ask Wikipedia and Google for some help :)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_bellisima/ 2008-05-28 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
158. Well, it all depends on how you go towards finding the character. For instance, if you follow the Meisner method, you think, "What events would have had to happen in my life to make me this person?" And you find that person in you, and if it happens to be part of your personality, it makes things easier. :)

I totally fangirl Faulkner. I've got a picture of him on my wall alongside Johnny Depp, lol. Also, male!Quentin Compson FTW. He was emo before emo was in style. I've read Sound and the Fury and Absalom, Absalom! and I'm currently halfway through As I Lay Dying.

They probably WILL since they will have a part in Secret Invasion that begins on June 4th and since Teddy is part Skrull.

In fact, I'm afraid Teddy will BETRAY every one at the same time and anyway, half of the Young Avengers are apparently going to DIE.

!QUOTES FROM CHRIS YOST, who's doing the Secret Invasion part on the YA and Runaways!

"This story is extremely relevant to both Runaways and Young Avengers, and by the nature of the event and the inclusion of members like Xavin and Hulkling. They're Skrulls. Can they be trusted?
Quite frankly, no."

Also

"Both teams are heroes, they've seen and done so much in such a short time. They've done incredible things. But this is different. This is a fight they can't win, because they've lost before it even begins."

And

"Things get bad, I won't lie. Really, really bad. But a lot of the blame can be on Bendis for this one. He's the evil mastermind here. But I do lean towards action, and this mini, this whole event will have that to spare."

So after all the drama that WILL happen I sure hope you won't think they haven't grown (well, if they're dead, than YEAH, they won't have grown).

Finally, they are not gay superheroes. They are superheroes that happen to be gay - a fact that is left in background during the entire series. Sadly.

Done ranting.

126. Oh god that song still makes me want to cry. DDD:

137. Actually, one of my favorite pairings is a canon character/OC as well. I know where you're coming from.

153. I don't know, personally, I think if two people fall in love and then find out later OH GUESS WHAT WE'RE SECRETLY RELATED that shouldn't automatically nullify their feelings for each other. With some people it might, and I'm sure it does, but I really don't see how that's an automatic "they never loved each other" reset button or anything. I say if you wanna ship it, ship it. He may be his father, but he's not his dad, you know?

[identity profile] leboz.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
People automatically assume any original character is a sue now, and as an OC writer myself it irks me. I end up not being able to admit that I write OCs.

Re: 137

[identity profile] galbadia.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
It is kind of annoying, isn't it? :/ I currently have an FFVIII fic with a few OCs, none of which end up with canon characters; I simply like using them to give new perspective on the universe or the pre-existing characters. Which is basically what I'm doing with the aforementioned fic. Or will, once it gets rolling better. I'm also using them as a sort of... extra bit apart from the canon characters. Something new so it's not so stagnant, you know?

I've seen a few good OCs before, though I have yet to see a fic where it's Canon/OC and is done for the sake of a believable relationship as opposed to vicariousness. D: Sadly, my fandoms are breeding grounds for the latter, lulz.

ahaha posted twice. fuck you, LJ. :|

167, ns!5

[identity profile] mistressofrobin.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
167) Ah-hahaha. Man, I loved those Sweet Valley books when I was a kid. But I can't help but think that particular book's cutline sounds...wrong somehow. :/

ns!5) I've always seen Reaper as a dramedy. Early in the series the amount of drama and comedy was quite balanced, but from give or take ep. 11-12 on it shifted towards more suspense and drama with a handful of great jokes thrown in. And honestly? It's the dramatic focus that really strengthened the show. We're delving into an interesting mythology and realizing that not all is as seems with the characters we thought we knew. Of course I love the humor in the show too. The scriptwriters come up with some brilliant one-liners and banter. But calling it just a comedy is selling the series short because it's so much more than its wit. I wouldn't call it satire either because I don't see it as making fun of other supernaturally themed shows. It's just putting its own spin on something that's been done before, and it works.

Besides, what's wrong with having a heckuva lot of fun picking apart, analyzing, and thinking out the mythological bits? Just because Reaper's LOL FUNNY doesn't mean there's no thought behind it.

Re: 167, ns!5

(Anonymous) 2008-05-28 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
I get sick of nit-picking; it gets old FAST. And Reaper is listed as a comedy on iTunes and everywhere else. I mean it has a goofy concept. The cast members are still calling it a comedy. XD Golden Girls had drama in it....but it was still listed as a comedy. Reaper is listed as a comedy and will be sold in the comedy section of the store.

*sigh*

The more absurd the show is...the more serious the fandom takes it. The fandom seems to have NO sense of humor whatsoever. Shaun of the Dead had drama in it...but it is still a comedy.
