This twitter thread (LGBT and consent)

I'm not straight, but I don't get this? Some of it seems to be only about gay men, but other times he seems to be talking about gay people in general.

I'm not sure if I like the idea that consent would different in a same-sex situation - I'd like to be able to say no and have it respected regardless of gender?

I didn't get it either, but I'm straight. I don't think his message was suited for twitter. He basically said "IT'S JUST DIFFERENT" without any sort of explanation.

Man. Today has been crazy. Not only US politics, but Kevin Spacey came out as gay officially to try and throw the media off the fact he sexually assaulted a 14 year old.

Re: This twitter thread (LGBT and consent)

(Anonymous) 2017-10-30 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"Came out as gay". Okay... but a) the whole world knew that, b) if a guy accuses you of sexual assault, you're pretty much outed anyway, so I don't feel like addressing that part of the situation is 'trying to throw the media off'.

Without knowing full facts, the one thing that burns me about the whole situation is the "OMG HE'S A PEDOPHILE" bullshit being flung around. Being 26 and going after a 14 year old that apparently looked 17 is sketch and wrong and deserves no defending if that's what happened, but it's not fucking pedophila, jesus h christ people.

Billy Eichner said this on Twitter: Kevin Spacey just invented something that hadn't existed before: A bad time to come out.

Re: This twitter thread (LGBT and consent)

(Anonymous) 2017-10-30 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, he's not actually saying anything. Like, there's nothing to actually argue against, because he doesn't even try to delineate the ways in which gay sexual culture differs from straight sexual culture, or the aspects of gay sexual culture that he worries the straights are going to attack. It's just literally not there. So it's hard to respond or evaluate what he's saying without those things. It's basically an empty/trivial thread.

Re: This twitter thread (LGBT and consent)

(Anonymous) 2017-10-30 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure he's talking about gay men, and I think he's specifically trying to make sure the discussions of consent and appropriate sexual advances that people are having because of Weinstein et al don't get uncritically applied to accounts of interaction between gay men.

I can see what he means in theory (though I dunno about how super advanced gay men's sexuality is) but I think he's being a little hasty. Right now the victim everyone's talking about is literally a child.

Am I the only one who doesn't think 14 is a helpless child uwu? Like, yeah, if you're 26, don't hit on a 14 year old, that's weird, but... 14 year olds have sex. They're not virginal pristine nuns.

Re: This twitter thread (LGBT and consent)

No, you are not the only person. Kevin Spacey and Bryan Singer also have no problem sexually assaulting minors!

14 year olds are not sexually mature, nor capable of giving informed consent for sex with adults

Hitting on a 14 year old is not just "weird". It is predatory and morally wrong. Calling it "weird" and saying that people who are objecting to it are prudes is fucked up. What on earth is this opinion.

Why does anyone who isn't of legal age need to be a helpless child? Anthony Rapp has been traumatized by the experience of Spacey making advancements on him.

14 isn't a fully developed brain that can cling onto anything and apply it to who you are as a growing person.

Sadly, you aren't the only one who thinks this is shrug-worthy.

Re: This twitter thread (LGBT and consent)

(Anonymous) 2017-10-30 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think the issue is that 14 year olds are "virginal pristine nuns," it's that there's a big difference in power and experience between a 26 year old and a 14 year old. I had older people hit on me as a preteen and young teenager, and the creepy things to me were: that I was never sure at the time whether the person was hitting on me or not, due to lack of experience (now, I can look back on it and see that they obviously were), and that I still felt like I was supposed to be polite to adults and that outright disobeying them could get me in trouble. All that "respect your elders" stuff. So felt like I had to try to weasel out of the situation without offending anyone, plus I couldn't outright say anything, because what if I was wrong and just imagining something more sinister in an innocent interaction?

I wasn't a "pristine nun" in my mind (I was a virgin), but I didn't have the life experience to really know what was going on and I didn't feel like I had the right to fully stand up to adults.

People are missing that even if Rapp were 49 (Terry Crews's age) it would still be wrong to throw another person onto a bed and climb on top of them, without permission, because you want sex.

Re: This twitter thread (LGBT and consent)

(Anonymous) 2017-10-31 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Sex with each other. There is an ocean between two 14 year olds having sex and a 26 year old pinning a 14 year old to a bed.

This guy is talking out of his ass. How much do you want to bet he's like the many others on Tumblr who make it that being gay is a totally special thing like no other. *eyeroll*

Re: This twitter thread (LGBT and consent)

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2017-10-30 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Ehh, yes and no. And not really in the way that he thinks.

First of all, a lot of gay and bi men (broadly defined) are not down with being groped or snogged by strangers without permission, especially in a professional context with implied quid pro quo going on. Not everyone is down with the lack of boundaries in club culture either.

Second, we were side-eying chickenhawks back in the 80s and 90s when Rapp was sexually assaulted by Spacey (allegedly just to cover legal asses, not that I think that Spacey's PR people are in a position to blacklist all of this chatter.) It just was impossible to have a serious conversation about that without all the consequences of outing everyone involved. But no, it was not appropriate for Spacey to hit on Rapp at age 14.

My tiny bit of salt is that everyone is treating Rapp and Crews as credible today after decades of gaslighting and JAQing ("just asking questions") attempts by men (broadly defined) to discuss sexual assault and sexual abuse? Yeah, I think straight women are not the experts there.
