It's amazing that having qualms over what gets written and posted about seems to be equated to being elitist.

[There're a load of newbies in my fandom at the moment who do nothing but write OOC woobie AUs. With piss and squid. I hate every single one of them, and judging on the no feedback they get, so does everyone else.]

There is no shame in having standards.

Are you me? My fandom is full of new, uninformed fans squealing over tentaclefic and kawaii bishie five-way PWPs. There's a possibility that these could be good fics if anyone would proofread them or do a quality check, but as it stands...

I wish honest criticism was in style on LJ, but sadly, that would interrupt the fandom circlejerk.

130. Anime/Manga is not a genre.

140. Dude, Rip van Winkle was awesome. Definitely my favorite of the Nazi vampires.

142. Please check your ignorance at the door and try again.

142- BWAHAHAH are you fucking kidding me. A) Manga's usually have way more then one plot line (Parakiss for example is 5 volumes and has at least 3) and western comics are NOTORIOUS for being long and drawn out, and ususally crossing several books. You're issue isn't Western vs Easter. It's one shots/short serise vs. non one shots. Tard.

(Anonymous) 2008-07-11 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I find this statement hillarious. You're only looking in western mainstream rubbish like Marvel's crap called Civil War. DC'S "Vertigo" line is a perfect example of doing it right. Take a look at their "Lucifer" series, or even better, Y: The Last Man which has a lovely overarching plot in 10 volumes and each volume stands alone as it's own storyline.

124. Obviously she wasn't a math teacher (I kid, I kid).

127. MST3K can be hit-and-miss. Pumaman and The Final Sacrifice are so fantastic, and then you can get an episode where nothing's really working.

137. I had an inverse reaction. The opening for Cowboy Bebop was so good, I was then let down by the first five minutes of the first episode, and just watched the beginning again and again. It continued like this for a while.

156. Every time someone brings up fandom things to real-life actors or writers, I feel completely cringey and embarrassed. Even when I'm not part of the fandom. Even though my paper for my Honours seminar was ON fandom and shipping wars.

The feeling's what I imagine it would be like for you to walk in on your parents having sex while they walk in on you masturbating to your poster of Goku going Super Seiyan AT THE SAME TIME.

162. Yes, because you're really taking the sophisticated high-ground with Heroes there (I find the show fun sometimes too, but come ON. Popeye the Syler Man!)

(Anonymous) 2008-07-11 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
No Shatner? Wow.

No Stephen Fry? Double wow.

Four John Malkovich secrets? Guess that makes up for no Shatner and no Fry.

:-)

The reason I like anime (not all of it, obviously, just the shows I do like) is that they know when to stop and don't drag shit out forever. All my favourite shows have either 12 or 24/5 episodes, and I love them exactly for the narrative structure resulting from such a limited time frame. Hell, this was probably the reason I got into anime in the first place.

So there you go. Kind of depends on what you watch :)

142

[identity profile] ketchupblood.livejournal.com 2008-07-11 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
On the other hand, I hate the fact that western series/shows/MOVIES have a different plot every single time. Movies always seem underdeveloped to me (like, WTF, they should have taken more time to explore that relationship/figure out the puzzle/how anticlimactic that they could finish their mission after only getting shot at three times by bad guys whose organization is about to be CRUSHED) because they rush the plot so much to get it to fit into ninety minutes. The fact that TV shows jump from plot to plot to plot without any cohesive overall mission (well, there's a slight one that gets maybe ten minutes an episode) annoys me too.

Re: 142

[identity profile] winged-panda.livejournal.com 2008-07-11 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate that too. I prefer one long, intricate plot myself, and many TV shows do have this. But american cartoons usually do not... and it's horrid >.> I was so shocked that Avatar did that I still can't believe it isn't anime sometimes.

126 - ... *jawdrop* Woah! Who knew South Park could be drawn so damn... pretty.

131 - This depends on how you're using those words. If you're simply using advanced words, then yes -- I agree with you. If those words are purple prose (and they are not addressing the actual words, but the way you used them), then I understand where the other side is coming from.

134 - I'm so mad at that. And by mad, I mean I'm laughing my ass off. Y'all are killing me with these "fist of" comments.

142 - Oh PLEASE! It's the quality of the plotline, not the quantity. Need I remind you of how bad Civil War sucked? Trials of Shazam? The first few issues of Nightwing after OYL? You want an example of "one plotline" in Eastern comics that was excellent? Look up the anime/manga "Monster". Beats the shit out of most of what DC or Marvel has done in the past decade.

And, as a person who had to buy several books per month over a year just to keep up with ONE story - I assure you that Western Comics do the exact same shit.

Hey, out of curiosity...I'm about to begin Monster, and this has been weighing on my mind for a whike. Would you suggest starting with the manga first or the anime?
