142. Thank you. Seriously. I'd rather read Superman any day of the week than a manga.

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2008-07-12 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
And Superman is short, concise and self-contained...?

At least with something as overlong and mindless as Naruto there's a clear starting point, a single timeline and an end in sight.

I mean, like what you like, but I don't think Superman is the best example to be drawing there. :/

I think her art has good concepts but poor execution, and that kind of goes for her fic as well. A lot of the time she has drastic spelling errors and poor grammar, but goddamn she comes up with some great ideas.

A Price For Madness was the fic that made me ship Youji/Aya (and I've been shipping it hardcore since then). Her original fiction, Dynasty of Ghosts, is something I re-read at least once a year.

I think she just needs a good beta for her fic, and some life drawing classes to get proportions right in her art.

A lot of the time she has drastic spelling errors and poor grammar

what I find funny is that most people would rip a writer up for spelling errors and poor grammar but because she's a 'good artist' (which is completely subjective), she's given a pass.

[identity profile] eibborn.livejournal.com 2008-07-12 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
131. I always like it when I have to look up a word or two to read something. Maybe you're overdoing it, though, if you get a lot of comments like that. Try to keep it down to one or two obscure words per chapter, maybe?

[identity profile] stephiee-chan.livejournal.com 2008-07-12 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
142. Clearly they are the only two western comics you have read, and you just happen to be reading the wrong manga. You're not fighting western comics and anime/manga here, you're fighting long and short plots.

N!F4. Haha me too, and boy is it disappointing.

126. I admit, I'm not the biggest fan of bishiefied South Park art, and I feel like one of the only people in the fandom who isn't. It's nice once in a while, sure, but it seems like good non-anime South Park fanart is almost nonexistant. I did like BABYHiP though, I miss her site.

153. The first Fry/Bender fanfic I found was one with weepy-uke!Bender getting it on with zombie!Fry. That was enough to discourage me from ever enjoying that pairing. D:

Edited because I make no sense after work.

104. Because, looking at previous secrets post, L would make a pretty awesome girl. XD NO, SERIOUSLY, DON'T WORRY. When it comes to fictional characters, there's something that, like, transcends sexuality, it seems. I'm more attracted to fictional guys than real guys (ie, for the latter, not at all). I think it has to do with being so strongly attracted to personalities in fictional characters. You either love 'em or hate 'em, and sometimes this happens. (:

Love the first sentence of your secret, though. XD

108. Not related to the secret itself, exactly, but hot damn I need to catch up on that series. *A*

116. ... I want pins. *^* BUT UH YEAH ME TOO SORTA. I bought it because I heard the storyline was epic... kind of. Mostly I bought it because I heard so many people saying it was sogood, so! XD; Kinda similar here? JUMPIN' THE BANDWAGON HOORAH. (Plus kasjfhajf yes so much love for all those things especially the OST~~~)

117. Eh. I'd say I mostly try not to compare them, because they were both Doctors... but then I realize I have already gone "BUT TOM BAKER IS THE BEST" so I'm not allowed to say they're all created equal. XD

121. It's not really that big a deal. Sampson is just a bit of a better-known name, is all. =X

122. ... I would disapprove on general terms except. Yeah if she throws fits and flames because other people like different stuff than her she's doing it wrong. ;; K-keep on being mature, yourself!

123. ... Kinda. If you'd just stop with the "I hate yaoi!" thing, it might get better. Hating the tendency for people to jump on any yaoi ship is a different thing and still allows you to like the things you like, for their own reasons, if you think they make valid sense. (And I admit that Hazel and Bigwig sorta does!)

128. That is a pretty good reason not to lie.

130. ... So because a lot of people on a community you frequent like something, you now hate it? It sounds like you were just looking for the excuse anyway (especially if you feel you have to use the word "tolerate" about a FREAKING GENRE/STORYTELLING MEDIUM ;;).

131. People who review fic with "DON'T USE BIG WORDS!" without having a good reason for it (if it's in dialogue or from the point of view of a character who wouldn't use those words, for instance), they're being kinda ridiculous. Don't worry so much about it ♥

133. This is a refreshing outlook on fandom! ♥ Mostly we just see "no I don't want other people liking this thing I like!" and while sympathetic, that gets old after a while.

136. It depends on what you're saying they're wrong about, and how you're doing so. If someone is coming up with theories that are easily refuted by stuff that's already come up in canon, it's actually good to point out what they obviously didn't notice. If someone doesn't worry about canon and wants to write a fic of a relationship that they enjoy anyway, you're being a jerk if you just respond with "that would never happen, stop writing it." If you're doing the former, you're just fine!

140. FELLOW RIP FAN FUCKYEAH! ♥♥♥ I love everyone in that series pretty much equally, but I have to admit- Rip had probably the best character design ever, at the very least!

142. Uh... huh. You know, actually, there's usually story arcs in manga! You should try to find some good ones! Including ones that are, oh, a total of thirteen or twenty-six episodes long anyway! And if you honestly think a lot of Western shows don't get repetitive and stretch ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND... you're not paying a bit of attention.

Put another way, just because you have a short attention span doesn't mean we're wrong. If you don't like long storylines I suggest you don't read Animorphs or watching shows like Friends, Farscape, the Avengers, or anything else either. A good way to go about things? Is to watch and read the things that you enjoy, and stop getting your panties in a twist because other people have a different opinion.

153. Because Fry would scream like a little girl.

And then Bender would laugh at him.

And then they'd have beer.

... Actually, I want this story now too.

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-07-12 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
155. OH FUCK OH FUCK OH FUCK YES TIME SQUAD ME TOO. Holy shit. S-so much love for this and for you, OP. Loved that show with a burning passion. It and Historyonics (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0410990/) did a better job of teaching me history than school did. :>

156. I'm less going "OMG DAVID TENNANT WILL SEE THIS FANDOM WILL BE SHUT DOWN!" I just think it was a douchy thing to do because of all the ranting about what a horrible Doctor he makes. It seems unnecessary mean to steer him toward a wank-hole. ):

160. "Great actors" is a measure of talent and personal opinion, not resume, you know.

162. I don't think there is a way to reasonably say how incredibly jerky that is.

not!secret #1: IAWTS, completely. In every aspect. ♥

not!secret #2: THANK YOU

not!fandom #1: ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ GOOD. And I mean this in all seriousness. Rock on and enjoy your stronger you!

too!big: *hugs. a lot.* I'm sorry, that sucks. D: I hate that part of fandom, the fact that it's full of people who judge you for no good reason... Here's hoping you find a corner of fandom you can call your home and feel comfortable in! Good luck ♥

158

123. A hypocrite and kind of a douchebag. (Unless "hate seeing gays everywhere" means that you're in fandoms that are full of slash and have no het, and since you like het better, you're frustrated by this. In which case, cool, but...dude. Wording.)

130. Anime/manga isn't a genre. It's an art style.

131. Do you seriously get comments like that? Oh god. I weep for humanity. D:

142. A) Not all manga works that way, B) it's not full of plot holes if it's done right, just like everything else, and C) some of us like epic plot lines, douchebag. Just because it's not your cup of tea doesn't mean it's stupid.

not!secret 3. Thank you. Christ.

130, 142

[identity profile] nashidesei.livejournal.com 2008-07-12 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
130. Anime ≠ genre. Anime = style used in various genres. Thank you.

142. ...You do realize that Bone followed a single storyline, right? It had separate arcs within the storyline--same as any good story, Eastern or Western. There are plenty of anime and manga that have separate arcs but follow the same general storyline (eg: Rurouni Kenshin, Petshop of Horrors, Fullmetal Alchemist, Ranma ½, Urusei Yatsura, Those Who Hunt Elves, Record of Loddoss War, Outlaw Star), and plenty of "Western" works of fiction that exhaustively follow one storyline for years and years (eg: Lord of the Rings, the Wheel of Time, Memory, Sorrow and Thorn, and various other works of "epic" fiction). It just sounds to me like you haven't found a shoe that fits, and rather than try any more you're just declaring that socks are inherently better.

114. Starbuck was a man in the original and she's certainly not your typical girl. Don't feel bad.

139. That's how I felt when I found out Eccleston was leaving. But I ended up loving Tennant. When a new Doctor comes, give him a chance. ;)

142. *grins* And that's exactly why I like them and not western comics. Go figure.

[identity profile] thano.livejournal.com 2008-07-12 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
116. Word on everything but the end. =3
142. Lovely. What is your opinion on books?

Also, if you want episodic fare, I'd like to toss in Mononoke. Although 2-3 episodes per arc might be a little mindblowing for you, it does tie in everything in a nice neat package at the end of its 12 episode run, and even leaves a few tidbits open for speculation. Everyone loves a bit of speculation.

Perhaps Dennou Coil is more your fare? 1-3 episodes per arc, and deliciously animated, and it is all neatly wrapped up at the end. Then again, it is one complete storyline, so... might not be your cuppa.

You might like Paranoia Agent better. The stories are (as far as I can tell) completely unrelated, except for the main hero and villain.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya might be good too. There are 2-3 episodes per arc, and guess what? They're already aired out of order, so that might be a little heads up for you.

You're not complaining about anime, dear. You're sick and tired of these godawful epic storylines which are so susceptible to plotholes and discontinuity, and you much prefer episodic content which comes with its own special sense of continuity and susceptibility to plot holes.

Basically, your complaints make no sense, and you really need to get out more.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2008-07-12 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
123) Kinda, yeah, but you know, you don't have to be one. This might clue you in on what all those other ships that you've been looking down on are about. Each of them is someone else's Hazel/Bigwig.

126) The South Park Fanon is so very far from the show in pretty much everything (aging up, art, themes) that I see it basically as it's own entity having pretty much nothing to do with the show.

136) Well they say you always love your first Doctor -- mine was 4. This one has come close to his level of awesomeness.

142) Heh, I'm the opposite. I love long complicated multi season story arcs so much better than episodic shows where everything goes back to some lame default state at the end of every episode. It's like nothing that happened in that episode meant anything, and the characters are just stagnant.

156) But you have to admit, we let our hair way down in fandom. Not everyone is comfortable about their idols seeing them being completely squicky or retardedly squeeful. It's not the impression most of us want to make with outsiders.

157) Well, honestly, I don't think Rosefen can complain about that season ender.

[identity profile] melengro.livejournal.com 2008-07-12 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
157. Actually, they probably can, since it was obviously written to placate them. Remember, the Doctor has weird hang-ups about artificial hybrids. Thinks they're fundamentally wrong and bad and flawed and impure for some reason. And he sicced one on Rose. Yeah, real romantic.
