[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-07-27 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Having gone through and read all the comments, it occured to me that I find it kind of hilarious that people are generally fine with people fantasizing about rape and pedophilia (not just thinking of today's secrets), but feel the need to tell someone how wrong it is to fantasize about the death of people who abused them IRL.

Actually I'm not sure hilarious is the right word. I think I meant "dumbass". Yeah, that's the one. Dumbass.

THIS ICON IS JUST FOR YOU! ♥

That said, I see your point. As much as I love MT, the art is downright crappy at times. I mean, in reality, he desperately needs an anatomy class. And I think it's clear he has the raw talent--his backgrounds and buildings are fabulous, mostly due to training, I think--but god, honing is a must. I hate his profiles and hairlines especially.

But really, drawn out? Hasn't the story taken place over...god, has it even been a week? I know that MT moves at a glacial pace online, but read it in volume format and it's actually fairly gripping and brisk. Really, he's not meant to be a webcomic maker (I hope he publishes Warmth volume by volume, truthfully). It's a matter of medium.

Honestly, though? Megatokyo is still among the best manga I've read. Fred isn't afraid to give his characters real, unattractive flaws (Kimiko going psycho on Piro in the subway, anyone?) and I really don't understand the wish fulfullment argument in that sense. This isn't Chobits--it's a story about some losers meeting some other losers who don't look it. And the "never seen a naked woman" thing? Doesn't he have a kid? So really, what wish would he be fulfilling? His marriage, by all accounts, seems happy and what you said was, to me, emblematic of this weird hatred online fandom harbors for Fred as a person.

Didn't mean to rant. But I'll end this by saying that I get where you're coming from in terms of fans as well--I'm a member of the forums and they piss me off sometimes. They just...have this tendency to fawn over him. It's like criticism of their sacred cow isn't allowed. He's a grown man, people.

Thank you and goodnight!

115: oh shi someone dissing Twilight? Call the Waaambulance.

180: Props to the OP. As much as I hate to admit it, I'd do it too.

182: DUDE THIS IS THE BEST SECRET I'VE EVER READ.

111, 114, 142, 153, 169, 175

[identity profile] luckypagoda.livejournal.com 2008-07-27 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
111: It's rather intriguing. I was in a production of The Twelfth Night, and one of my best friends played Antonio. His motivation for rescuing Sebastian was, in a word, "love." It's one of those things that crosses from subtext to, er, text.

114: Not that Latin isn't a useful language to know anyhow. It's a foundation.

142: Oh god. Bust a Groove fandom. (I agree. Strike would totally top.)

153: Most people have rape fantasies of some sort. The fantasies are hidden, in most cases, until they bubble to the surface.

169: A relevant, but ultimately irrelevant, story. I live in a very small town. We only just got a Wal-Mart and a Walgreen's this year. We had a Sam Goody for a while, but it had almost no business. I went through the bargain bin one day and I saw an Utada Hikaru CD. Somehow, that really warmed my heart. I don't know why.

175: She is, and she isn't. I didn't like the series very much, regardless, and in my opinion, you're not missing much.

[identity profile] callmejude.livejournal.com 2008-07-27 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
114. That's what I keep telling my dad, as well, but as a man who took Latin in college and then proceeded to do nothing with it, he's kind of hard to convince. Ah well. I know it'll come to use to me, and that's what matters.

Not only to I remember those books, but I agree with you that the supposed bad guy was quite hot, and I would totally have left my average boyfriend for him.

However, I enjoyed The Secret Circle books far more.

[identity profile] callmejude.livejournal.com 2008-07-27 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
107. I know exactly what you mean. Well, I always wanted siblings, but the Weasleys really did all they could to rub it in my face. :/

139. That was why I stopped writing on ff.net. They're all insanely immature over there.

[identity profile] chaoticchicken.livejournal.com 2008-07-27 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
145. Augh, I'm so sick of people like you. Just because I happen to enjoy reading a shitty book (and yes, I recognize it for the badly written self-insert Mary Sue fic that it is) does not mean everything I like is shitty. 8|

(Anonymous) 2008-07-27 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'm usually not like this and to be honest, it's freaked me out. I don't let it get to me enough to seriously affect my relationships with my friends though. I think the main issue I have is the hype. I mean, there are plenty of other YA authors out there who are just as good as S. Meyer and even better and I feel they deserve a lot more attention than she's getting. I at least read the first book before I went "OK, THIS IS NOT FOR ME" so yeah, I gave it a chance.

I basically had to make that secret to kind of get it off my chest and release what I felt so I could stop feeling so "UGH" over disliking someone else's fandom because I admit it's not a good thing to feel and I shouldn't let it make me disrespect other fans.

144. I'm the same way =/ I can't even consider the pairing without thinking of all the Aang hate/Mai hate/Kataang hate/Maiko hate/Mike and Bryan hate/HATE IN GENERAL that comes out of its fandom and it really turns me off. And I think I could have given it a chance otherwise.

Dammit fandom, look what you've done.

103 YAY BEST BEATLE
131 I worry sometimes that this is what two of my three sisters think of me (though I'm not really graphic at all when I talk about characters I like...)
134 Hating Megatokyo is a secret? (But yeah, I agree, shitsux.)
136 It was my favorite scene of the movie, too.
143 To be honest, the only thing I saw him in was Brokeback Mountain, which was a terrible movie (though he wasn't bad in it). So I'm glad his role as Joker made me aware of his acting ability, especially since it seems like most of the roles he previously got weren't all that great.
148 Dude, those things that they TURNED INTO at the end of the movie when they fused with the Mystiks gave me total nightmares, and I was like eleven when I saw that movie.
155 I love how he had trouble walking in the heels!
175 God is a "Mary Sue" now. Huh.

After thinking about this long and hard and talking about it with my therapist I think it is time for me to let you know I think you are the most hypocritical and ignorant person in all of f!s. I know some of this is childhood issues all to do with my brother but seriously even if it wasn't for that I would want to hit you in the face with a custard pie, and that would be on a good day where I'd been taking my meds all week. I know it's not just me who feels this way. I would make a secret about it but it's not fandom so I won't waste my time. I hate your superior attitude so much I want to puke.

119. I never have dreams like that, either. I thought it was such a rip-off when I had a dream I met the Tenth Doctor and there was no lemon, not even implied. Not even a kiss! Dammit, brain!

175. Haruhi is like... a mock-sue, somewhat. She has OMG SUPER SPECIAL MAGIC POWERS but is totally dumb and oblivious to the fact she's a special little snowflake, which IMO, is pretty funny.
What's wrong with the artwork though? x:

126. Enterprise was amazing. My mother has been a fan since she watched TOS as a child, and she loves Enterprise too. I really don't understand how so many fans just never got it. It was genius.

154. Doctor Who fans can be amazingly hyper-sensitive and judgemental for a show that doesn't take itself too seriously, and emphasizes thinking for yourself...

103. I know what you mean - I hate smoking, too, but some guys make it annoyingly pretty. DX

188. Happens to me all the freaking time. A while back, I wrote a post-DH story about George coming to terms with Fred's death, and Percy helping him through it, and it took me several months to get it the way I wanted it. I got a handful of comments and fav-ings, but it was nothing like the waves of recoginition I got for all the crap I'd written in a day or two (at most a week) that was riddled with porn. XD Not that I blame my fans for it - I rarely read stuff that isn't NC-17 or R, myself, so I can't jump down thier throats, but still...I can pout a little, right? XD

134. And him having never looked at a naked twig of a female is a BAD thing? Excuse the world for making women of all types and Fred actually enjoying that his wife is a curvy woman. I might take this criticism of his comic a little more seriously if you hadn't used that as a vocal point of your argument.
