123 My husband is 34 and has been an anime fan since he was like, seven (he watched the original Gundam the year it aired in Japan) and from what he's told me there was plenty of drama back in the old days. Fandom wasn't all about sex, but it wasn't perfect, either. And the only reason people usually didn't jump from one fandom to the other is because not as much anime was being produced, period. And for people like my husband who could just go to a store in Los Angeles and buy Japanese vhs copies of brand new OVAs and shit, they actually did "jump around" from fandom to fandom. Because it's boring to spend years and years fixated on the same anime.

124 I always wanted to watch the end of the third Gundam movie stoned out of my mind.

146 I rage when people talk negatively about Joy Division as well, simply because no other band has emotionally resonated with me on the same level.

149 Heteronormativity has nothing to do with shipping. Seeing everything through "slash goggles" doesn't make you any more sensitive to homosexuality or the invisibility of homosexuality in popular culture, it just makes you a retard that needlessly slashes EVERYBODY and EVERYTHING even when it makes no sense. And I hate it when people try to drag gender studies into fandom. Fandom = real life

154 Kamina isn't a virgin -- it doesn't make sense in the dynamic of the show ("my penis sword is so huge," "watch how a real man does it," etc.) And they never expressed how exactly he was unpopular with women underground, just that he was considered an outsider because of the way he butted heads with the village chief all the time.

164
Every day I find a new reason why I need to become an English teacher. Listen, beyond the fact that this book was making a parallel between Puritanical witch hunts and McCarthyism, the historical reason for the witch hunts had nothing to do with religion at all. Religious was just a lame justification for sexism and homophobia and racism which was the REAL reason people were targetted as witches. Saying that this book taught you about religion is like saying the 9/11 taught me a lot about religion because of the religious fanatics that destroyed the World Trade Center.

174 I'm 99% certain that I'm the only person outside of Japan who does fanart of my favorite character. I wondered recently why I even keep doing it, since there's no demand for fanart of this character even though he's in a fairly popular fandom.

129. YES. I realize now that I shipped a lot of people when I was younger, without realizing it. Jafar/Jasmine was definitely one of those. I also have loved villains, since I was a little girl. Jafar is hot.

168. I think this is a very valid point. I go both ways, I think; when I ship het, I am really just imagining MYSELF as the female in the relationship. Like...Wolverine/Rogue, for example. I suppose I "ship" them, because I read a lot of fanfiction about them, but the reason I find the fanfiction entertaining/erotic is because I imagine myself as Rogue. HOWEVER, I also find male slash erotic. Joker/Crane, for example. BUT, I don't "ship" slash, because I like to imagine that the men I find attractive (Joker and Crane) are het, because I fantasize about them with myself. ...if that makes sense. Same with House/Wilson. I think fanfic about them is hot, but I would RATHER imagine myself with either of them. (Yum.)

What it comes down to is: I agree with you. I spend much more time fantasizing about myself with characters than actually thinking about what OTHER characters they should be with. The thing is, nobody is writing fanfiction about Wolverine/ME, so I make do with Wolverine/Rogue, because I can imagine that I'm Rogue.

I'm rambling...

BUT I LIKE YOUR POINT. I WILL LICK HIS DIRTY JOKER BALLS MYSELF AS WELL.

189

[identity profile] darkdork13.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I don't exactly disagree with you, but I never found Heath Ledger terribly attractive until TDK, either. Neither the Joker nor Heath do it for me except when they're combined. It has almost nothing to do with how he looks and everything to do with how Heath plays the character.

116. WORD. Everything I know about HTML, CSS, and Photoshop came from running a neopets guild.

182. LOL@ the Weekenders pic. I always thought Lor was a boy, so I got confused when they used female pronouns.

111, 131, 143: So many secrets talk about outwardly hating RPF, but inwardly shipping something. I don't read much RPF to be honest, but I don't see why so many people have such an ~ethical~ problem with it either. I mean, you're using your mental conception of a real person to create a story- it has no tangible connection the real person themself. Is it really that different than creating a story about a fictional character from a TV show or book? And I don't really see a lot of people having problems with historical fiction, which is pretty much just published RPF. What's the big deal?

[identity profile] christ-chexx-4u.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
historical fiction as rpf....LOL i never thought of it that way, thats hysterical!

as for rpf in general....yeah, there's a squick factor involved. i think that once people are dead, there's going to be a natural curiosity about their lives. but, like, how would you feel if there was some random person that youve never met, who right now was out writing porn about you and your friend/co-worker/significant other? i think THAT'S what weirds people out about it. i'm still on-the-fence, i go back and forth as to loving it or hating it, but i can understand the reservations some have to the fact that no, it's really not just a character, it's a REAL PERSON. hence the distinction between rpf and regular fafic.

168 - I tend to agree with you but overall "Mary Sues"/Self-Inserts are looked down upon so people shy away from them to avoid flames.
Although people might not admit it they do it anyway.

189 - I agree. And this also applies to other characters people are constantly "I'd Hit It"
Most people if put in the position to "hit it" they wouldn't.

168. Voyeurism is a valid kink, you know. And some people like specific character dynamics with their porn.

And if they do want to separate themselves from their sexual fantasy then so what?

169: So very, very, agreed.

172 - Aw, you totally should put it back. Judgement via fandomsecrets isn't really the best way to form an opinion. :)

177 - So true. And then there are those masters who have nailed their characters so perfectly, it blows my mind. Such is the way of fandom!

185 - WOAH! That is one sexay robot! I kinda want that figure now, even though I have no idea where it's from. :D *lost her robotsexual qualms a while back XDD*

186 - AHAHAHA Captain Planet!! OMG I loved that show as a kid!

Too big 1 - DDD: Claude! *tears* PLEASE COME BACK!!! (There's been an odd amount of Claude-love lately... it makes me so happy that others appreciate him!)

Too big 3 - You are so not alone on the crush thing - I adore that yellow Autobot! That's great that you've got a boyfriend like him. :) (But, RE: voice actor - how could you tell if you wanted a new voice actor or not? He only really got two lines in the whole movie!)

Oh great, now I wanna rewatch TF for the millionth time.... XD

Pretty much. Between FS, Right-Click and the TWOP motivation thread, I've become sick of the sight of their snouty faces and their names on a tag-list of hawt actors.

OTOH, the plots sound absolutely fascinating and "yes we really went there" dark.

Look, just because YOU like it that way, doesn't mean it's wrong not to.

I fantasize about having sex with fictional characters, and I read and write pairing fanfic. Doing one of those things doesn't necessarily mean you can't or won't do the other.

I ship very hard pairings where I have no desire to fuck either person - I want the characters be happy together, that's all.
Even when I write/read fic about a character I do fancy, it's not necessarily a self-insert thing. (If it was, I probably wouldn't find myself writing Ishida/Orihime porn from ISHIDA's POV).

If we're going to talk Batman fandom...liking the idea of Batman sucking the Joker's balls could be an expression of someone's desire to suck the Joker's balls themselves. Or it could be LIKING THE IDEA OF BATMAN DOING IT. It's not impossible.
Personally, I'd much rather sit and watch Batman do it. If I insert myself into that fantasy, it's as a voyeur not a participant. Just because YOU want to suck Joker balls doesn't mean everyone does. Nor does it mean you're automatically better or more secure.

What's wrong with YOU that you can't understand that not everyone has to be the same? There's no one right way of doing it.

149. 151. 174. 189.
