This story that combines the Hobbit and LOTR.

"Even the smallest person can change the course of the future." - Galadriel

In an attempt to get the Arkenstone back for Thorin, Bilbo discovers the ring he's been using is the One Ring. Seized by a need to destroy gold, especially gold with the ability to ensnare creature and king alike, he sets out alone for Mordor. Anything to forget about the love that gold cost him.

What he doesn't know is that Thorin is no longer under the thrall of gold, and is desperately racing to catch up with him to keep him safe.

They may have just started on another adventure, but this one may not end as well as their first quest.

Instead of taking out Moreau's men in a blaze of glory, Eliot offers himself in exchange for the team's safety. Now, months later, the team will have to pull their greatest con in order to get their hitter back.

Let's go steal an Eliot.

"The trailer showed too much!" Stop watching trailers. At this point, it is your fault if you think you are spoiled.

I'm not sure it was a complaint, really, but I was walking out of the theater after watching Fury Road and there were two teen/early-20s guys and a girl walking out near me and one guy asked the girl how she liked the movie and she said "It was weird... he had chains on his nipples!" I mean, yes, there was a guy with chains on his nipples, but I found it funny that that was what she fixated on.

My grandmother once complained that a movie about a war (that she lived through!) was violent.

My aunt complained that Oranges and Sunshine was factually incorrect because it criticised the church and a religious group within the church that she respected. She insisted and still does insist that people of god don't do those things. She also vocally supported a church leader accused of that for the same reason. Yikes.

One of my friends got so pissed off that Ofelia ate two grapes in Pan's Labyrinth she couldn't enjoy the movie after that point. I think it's so funny she hates the movie so much because it's my favorite movie.

I don't remember what movie it was, but a reviewer spent a lot of time complaining that the main actress in it pronounced "Newfoundland" wrong and that it was extra stupid of her to get it wrong because her character was supposed to be from there. Except according to the reviewer's phonetic guide, she was actually pronouncing it correctly for a native (like you're saying "new found land" as three separate words) and the pronunciation "newfoundl'nd" that everyone else uses is the incorrect one.

Monsters Inc had a bad ending because making kids laugh in the middle of the night is just as bad as scaring them because both deprive children of the good night's sleep they need to be healthy.

I told a friend of mine that a different friend had not liked the film Beowulf and he started arguing that she was wrong even though he hadn't seen the movie at all and barely knew what it was about.

How do you handle the temptation to compare yourself to others?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-16 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I find I have a lot of trouble with this.

I write fic, and it's generally well-received, and I have a few people who are really into my work and who give me great feedback. At the same time, I can't help but notice those whose work is more popular than mine. I compare my numbers (kudos, comments, bookmarks) to other writers, and I get envious if someone has more than me, of any of those categories. I feel really guilty about this in regards to one writer whom I personally admire. Her fic is fantastic! She's written some of my favorite works, and I always feel moved to write detailed comments when I read her stuff. I should be happy that she gets the recognition that she does, and to some extent I am, but there's another part of me that's like, "oh no she's better than me, people like her more, I suck."

Rationally, I know I don't suck. There are people who like what I do (including the writer I mentioned above; she leaves me wonderful comments). I shouldn't be bothered by people "doing better." I should be happy for them, because they deserve it! They work hard and write great things! But I still have times when I just feel so terrible about myself because someone is getting more attention than me.

Anyone who's felt this: how do you deal with it? How do you talk yourself down from this kind of dramatic, all-consuming envy?

What's the best wank I missed on here in the past three years?

I'm a big fan of Dear Prudence and I thought this one might amuse some of you:

Q. Baffled and bewildered: About one and a half years ago my nephew (24) came out as transgender. His mom would not accept this, and he asked if he could come stay with us for a short time while looking for a job and an apartment. We readily agreed and have always used his proper name and pronouns. Upon his arrival, I was shocked by the person he had become. Although I expected some changes, the other trans people in my life had always changed for the better. My nephew, however, had become an entitled nightmare. He refused to look for work, he balked at helping with basic chores, and he expected to be taken care of financially. We were paying all of his living expenses, including clothing, fuel, and toiletries. He would not eat the food that we prepared and would have a complete meltdown if my husband and I didn’t prepare a separate meal for him.

After a couple of months of this nonsense, I sat him down to discuss him finding employment and his own place, as per the original agreement. He said that he hadn’t looked for work because using his legal name would cause his dysphoria to become debilitating. We paid for him to legally change his name and get a new ID. He began ignoring me completely. If he was displeased with the meal we had prepared, he would slam cupboards, sigh, and dramatically throw it out. I sat him down and asked what the issue was. Initially, he denied that he was behaving in any way other than how “normal, unrelated roommates” act toward each other. I pointed out that those “roommates” also pay rent and contribute to the household upkeep. He lost his temper and started screaming at me. The next day I tried to approach the situation in a different manner by asking him how he behaved when he lived with his grandma. He claimed that he did not remember. After having a few more questions answered in the same way, I voiced concern about him having no memories of his first 23 years. He then informed me that, as those were years when he was “female,” he couldn’t be expected to remember them. He said that the experience and memory ceased to exist once he realized that he was male. Is this a commonly seen change when a person begins their transition? Due to his behavior I no longer allow him to live with us.

A: No, it’s not common for people to start passive aggressively throwing out lovingly prepared meals for them upon transition. Your nephew is a jerk, and I’m sorry he treated you so badly. I’m glad he no longer lives with you, and you did the right thing in refusing to allow him to bully you into waiting on him hand and foot. Claiming to “not remember” badly treating other people in the past isn’t a function of transition; it’s a function of trying to avoid accountability and get away with bad behavior.
