What's your new thing?

Taken up a new craft? Embraced minimalism? Learning a new language? Whatcha got going on FS?

So I know Marie Kondo has become something of a meme, but I read her book before it became famous and it has actually changed my life. I hadn't realised how much stuff I had been hoarding until I started looking at my life with a more analytical eye. Also I had never connected my inability to keep my house tidy with the fact that not everything had its own place. It's definitely still a work in progress and I don't follow her rules absolutely but yeah, that's been my big new thing for a little while now.

Not doing anything new, sadly. But I've started watching World of Dance this season. I'm obsessing over Jefferson y Adrianita, a Latin dance couple, and this female dance group called Oxygen. Both have made it to the final, so I'm excited about that.

Not new as such but I've got back into trying to write original stories and have submitted to a handful of competitions. It's the first time I've ever done anything along the lines of serious publishing attempts.

I was sort of inspired by a friend but feel like such a kid compared to her. She writes really flowery and disjointed ambiguous prose but it wins competitions so she's doing something right obviously! I do like her stories but at the same time I sometimes kinda feel like I get a headache trying to work out what she's driving at. I also seem to like writing characters who are talkers more than she does.

Of course I like ambiguity every now and again and obviously I'm not "no descriptions ever" in my writing but I feel SO simple compared to her and I feel like if that's what people are looking for, I've got no chance. Got to be in it to win it though.

I'm trying to learn to knit. I made a whole scarf in just knit stitch, now I'm trying to introduce perl and it's not going well. I can *do* perl, but when I get to the next row I look at the perl stitches and can't work out where to put the needle. It's a bit of a drag.

I also just bought a new laptop, which I should hopefully have by today or tomorrow, and I really hope I can get it to talk to my wacom tablet so I can do more digital art. My old laptop refused to acknowledge my wacom at all :c

I started learning to play guitar in April, got frustrated with it and dropped it in May, then picked it up again mid-June. I think part of the problem was that I was trying to do too much initially and practicing for too long. Now that I'm taking it slower, I'm much happier with it and I'm actually making progress instead of getting pissed off at my clumsy fingers.

I had a dream that there was a Broadway musical about the life of Mr. T called "I Pity the Fool", and in the dream I was actually at this play and saw it. I dont remember much about the play itself other than it was amazing. And now I want it in real life.

I love codependent ships. They would do anything to save each other, and fuck the consequences? Yes please. If one of them were to die the other would never really move on? Hell yes. They are the most important thing to each other, no competition? Yes, yes, yes.

In fact, if a ship isn’t kind of codependent, I’m probably not ever that into it. Healthy shmealthy. Give me profound intensity, and deep, abiding devotion.

so, uh, medical, probably gross question.

i opened a door very enthusiastically today and my foot was in the way, so the door edge scraped a skin layer off my big toe (yikes, do not recommend) and not so cery gently touched my toenail. (still attached)
I disinfected it and put a sterile bandage on it. its throbbing a bit, bc i walked on that foot for a bit after. I am not sure if some skin is still stuck under the nail. (gross)
Question: go to doc next morning to get a look or wait & see? It hurts about as much as is expected, no big swelling. Bleeding stopped quickly

Russia in the 80s and 90s

(Anonymous) 2020-08-12 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Long shot, but can anyone point me in the general direction of any resources on Russia in the 80s and 90s? I want to write fic where, in part of the divergence from canon, the protagonist lives in north-west Russia for four/five years in this general period. The canon is American urban fantasy and he's living with a bunch of very old wizards, so I don't need exacting detail - but I like research, and I want to get things right.

Re: Questions thread!

(Anonymous) 2020-08-13 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Er, this is not a nice question, but does anyone know any avian veterinarians who might have some idea what the fuck is going on with the crows near my work?

I posted about this yesterday, but crows are dropping like flies in the patio at my work, which includes a fake stream and pond. I've contacted the county disease vector program that liaises with the state CDC, and they've collected four of the nine crows that died, one last week and three today.

The one last week tested negative for West Nile.

My boss caught a sick one and took it to a wildlife rehab yesterday, and I caught one today (it was in the pond, whatever this is seems to make them hot or thirsty or both) and my boss took it in, too.

But if it was something in the pond water (and we asked the maintenance guys and they haven't changed the chemicals they use), or another bird disease like exotic Newcastle or whatever I'd expect other species of birds who come to drink or live in the area (we're less than 50 yards from the riparian corridor of the local river, so lots of birds come to drink) to die, too, and it's just crows.

I'm worried maybe someone is deliberately poisoning them or they found a cache of poisoned rat bait or something.

Have you tried Animal Poison Control?
